There's one reason to read interview, and it doesn't really involve reading. At least not the sort based on words.
Interview is a large magazine, printed on paper somewhere between newsprint and a glossy. As an heir to the ideas and style of Andy Warhol, visuals are something it relies on, values, and does well. Great photos, unusual looks at established stars, and fun drawings abound. Interview was having fun with typeface and layout long before Raygun came along. Special issues of Interview have been fascinating in the past, so beautifully designed that content (and there really isn't that much, at least not in depth) is an adjunct to style, not the other way around. I remember one especially that was organized as a calendar for one month, with themes and visual conceits running across articles and from page to page in subtle and subliminal ways.
Interview is one of the few popular national magazines to interview/profile/feature visual artists, and do it well, with nice reproductions of their work and interviewers who actually know something about style, creativity and culture. They're still, after Warhol's death, inextricably focused on New York. This gives the staff access to the trendsetters and stylemakers that set the standard for the rest of the nation.
Of course, the other half of the Warhol legacy (not the serious art) is here as well: celebrity and nothing but. Interview has one gimmick of often having one famous person interview another; often these read like friends chatting, or like awestruck fans meeting mentors. Want to be privy to how K D Lang feels about Vivienne Westwood? Always wondered if Courtney Love and Stevie Nicks would really hit it off? Interview will let you know.
They also, even in this shallow mode, are often fairly hip to who's new and up and coming. Their "ones to watch" section does some nice spreads of new starlets of both genders, and these starlets often do go on to become bigger deals. Their brief capsules on movies and music also pick out the good and ignore the chaff. Another fun section is "page 5," which captures a lot of the beautiful people at NYC bashes ranging from radical to chic and back again.
