| Dosite1's Full Review: Utne Reader |
When this magazine first started appearing on news stands in the roaring 80's, I caught myself wondering, "what is an 'utne', and who reads a magazine about utne?" Well eventually, I picked one up, and soon I was a subscriber. Eric Utne founded the magazine in 1984. Utne Reader is as it proclaims in it's masthead, "the best of the alternative press." Playboy once called it a "hip Reader's Digest", and I think that that is true also.
The editorial staff at UR cull their way through everything that the alternative press has to offer. They look for the best of the left, often times zeroing in on trends as they emerge. They then publish those articles that they deem the best, in a wonderful bi-monthly magazine, Utne Reader. Recently I learned about the "Homos of Hip-Hop", the "Indie-Press", the latest on the drought.
The magazine runs around 100 pages, with most articles running around three pages. The ads actually ad value to the magazine, instead of getting in the way. Where else will you find out about "the original Boca Burger"? Not in a mainstream rag. The articles are of a typical lefty nature. Lots of tree hugging and spiritual community building treatises, but I like that stuff. I like to read about everything, and when I want to hear from the left side of the spectrum, Utne is the best source for a quick digest.
Utne.com is a great website too. The www.cafe.utne.com site won a Webby this year. It is a great online community that is some 60,000 strong. During the summer of 2000, they have run a "Shadow Convention" allowing members to interact and comment on the two political coronations that the Republican/Democrats are throwing this year. The Utne.com site also allows you to sample the wares so to speak, and you can even manage your account there.
The idea that there is a place to go for an alternative media roundup, is not important to everyone, but it is to me. Utne has just published it's 100th issue, and here is hoping that there will be at least 100 more. I subscribe to Utne Reader, and I recommend that you make Utne Reader part of a well rounded stack of magazines in your home too.
