Holiday Write-off Update

We have had to make some changes to the Epinions.com Holiday Write-off.
Because of sweepstakes rules we've had to make the following edits:
- Instead of one sweepstakes, we are now doing three.
- Prizes will now be drawn Monday through Friday on the following dates - Holiday Write-off Week 1: December 11th - 15th, Holiday Write-off Week 2: December 18th - 22nd, and Holiday Write-off Week 3: December 25th - 29th.
- Since there are three sweepstakes, you can now win once per sweepstakes and the submission dates will change (we'll publish those dates by next week).
- First reviews only need to be rated "Somewhat Helpful", "Helpful", or "Very Helpful" in order to qualify.
- There will now be even more prizes than previously planned.

Holiday Write-off

Get your typing fingers ready! You're going to want to write lots of reviews in the next few weeks. Epinions is giving away prizes in the form of eRoyalties credits (think Income Share). Here are a few details that you'll need to know.
- Start writing reviews now!
- Reviews will have to be rated Very Helpful and be the first Very Helpful review on a product. (check new post for updated information)
- The write-off will end on December 22nd at 11:59PM Pacific time. (check new post for updated information)
- There will be at least one prize drawn daily Monday through Friday during two weeks in December (11th-15th and 18th-22nd). (check new post for updated information)
- There will be multiple prizes drawn on certain days (7 winners a day maximum). (the maximum is now 6)
- The prizes will be in the form of eRoyalties credits.
- Start writing reviews now!
We will give out the full details early next week including full prize breakdowns.
I will give you one piece of information. The first prize will be a $1,000 eRoyalties credit.

New Category Lead In Music

We have a new Music Category Lead and his name is Bob_tomato. Bob_tomato replaces Madtheory who has been a stellar lead in the Music Category. Madtheory has let us know that his time on the site of late hasn't been what he thinks it should be, and has gracefully stepped down. We hope that Madtheory continues to contribute on the site in every fashion.
Congrats to Bob_tomato for his new role as he joins Lambchops in Music, and thanks to Madtheory for all his hard work.
Two New Features On Epinions

We've recently launched two exciting new features on Epinions.com that we feel will enhance your member experience on the site.
The first feature is RSS. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and allows for Epinions content to be shown across the web. You can subscribe to RSS feeds by member, product, or category and you'll see the links near the bottom of each page. The feeds will show the 25 newest items and will refresh a few times during the day.
Here are only some of the ways you can use RSS on Epinions.com.
- Using an RSS reader, you can read Epinions.com content without having to be on Epinions.com.
- You can promote Epinions.com content on your own websites, blogs, or even sites such as MySpace.
- It gives you an alternative to alerts. If you don't like waiting a full day to read the newest reviews of your favorite members, you can subscribe to member feeds and check your feeds throughout the day to see if there are any new reviews, without having to be on Epinions.com.

We also just re-launched the New Reviews (aka just in) page. We listened to member feedback and fashioned the re-launch with enhancements based on the feedback.
The first thing we decided was that we needed to make the number of reviews in the section more consistent across the board. We are showing all reviews written per category in the last two weeks. And if you want to go further back to see what you might've missed, you can go back two weeks at a time. This should help members read and rate reviews with more efficiency and leisure.
We also wanted to make rating express reviews and surveys easier. We understand that rating surveys especially can be a pain point for those in the Online Services category. And we gave members the option to mark all for "show" or "no show" to expedite the rating process for express reviews and surveys.
In each New Reviews section, you now have the ability to:
- Show which reviews you have already rated so you can start rating where you left off

Show only reviews you haven't rated by the click of a link
- See reviews grouped together by their rating (in case you want to see what's being rated NH)
- Sort reviews by their overall rating

We hope the re-launch of the New Reviews section is helpful for everyone who loves to read and rate reviews and also hope you find RSS to be beneficial to your everyday web browsing. If you have any feedback, send us an e-mail.

Update: Cross-Posting Policy Clarification

After much internal discussion and conversation with many of our members, we've clarified our policy with regard to cross-posting the same review on Epinions and other sites.
Cross-posting of reviews to other sites is not a violation of our User Agreement, nor is it grounds for down-rating of reviews. We've clarified the language of the User Agreement and several FAQs to establish this.
Reviews cross-posted to price comparison sites on or after September 13, 2006 may disqualify selection as a Top Reviewer, Advisor, or Category Lead. We recognize members' desire to publish their content wherever they wish, and we want to support that. At the same time, it makes sense for Epinions to highlight those members who promote unique content on Epinions. We've provided guidelines to help members understand which sites the policy pertains to and how to differentiate their reviews.
We rely on our Top Reviewers, Advisors, and Category Leads to support Epinions' User Agreement as well as our objectives as a community and a business. Selecting members for these roles is a process managed in cooperation with the community, and we will begin considering unique content as a factor in that process. Like all aspects of the nomination and selection process, this factor will be managed in cooperation between the community and Epinions.
Important points to keep in mind:
- If you are not a Top Reviewer, Advisor, or Lead, and are not interested in becoming one, this does not affect you.
- This is not retro-active. Only reviews posted from September 13th, 2006 and onward will be taken into consideration.
- Members can alter or differentiate their reviews to avoid any disqualification. Our rule of thumb is that your Epinions review must have 1/3 different or new content, plus a wholly different review title. See the Review Writing FAQ for more information.
- Only price comparison sites (such as PriceGrabber, Shopzilla, Amazon, Ciao, Dooyoo and others) are relevant. Smaller enthusiast and personal sites are not affected. See the Review Writing FAQ for more information.
Because these criteria will be a part of our regular hat selection process, it is not necessary to use down-rating as a response to cross-posted reviews, even if the author is a Top Reviewer. Please report any instances you find to us and we will take them into account at the next round of hat selection.
We recognize that the recent lack of clarity on this policy was a source of confusion and strife for many members. We apologize and offer our thanks for your patience. We owe a special apology to our Advisors who did what they thought was right in cracking down on cross-posting site-wide. We appreciate your passion for keeping the site clean and we hope that bringing clarity to this formerly mixed message will make your roles easier. We are relying on our Advisors to resolve any outstanding disputes about cross-posting, and to please withdraw any negative ratings already given on these grounds. We wanted to remind members that the Category Lead Feedback Form is now always available unlike in the past. We used to have the form open for a couple weeks at a time, but now, it is always open and we read the feedback and distribute it to the Category Leads every two months.
If you have any positive or negative feedback that you would like to share with Epinions as well as the Category Leads, please use the form. We use this feedback to help us analyze the program. The Las Vegas Meet and Greet is less than a month away, which means you have less than three weeks to RSVP for what should be a fantastic event. Since eBay Live, which is June 13-15, is going to be in Las Vegas, we figured we should be there as well. Epinions is hosting the 12th Meet and Greet in Las Vegas on June 17 at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay.

New York Meet And Greet (2006) Wrap Up

Epinions members came out in droves to the second New York City Meet and Greet at the ESPN Zone in Times Square. Here are some notes from the event.
- We doubled our previous attendance high to the tune of over 70 Epinions members and guests
- Tbthorn won a 4g iPod Nano in the member raffle
- Shopping.com President and CEO Lorrie Norrington was in attendance and had great things to say about our fine community
- CL's Joubert and his Online Stores & Services Category Lead partner Amykhar showed up for the event
- Members took home black long sleeved shirts with the "Epinions Loves New York" logo as well as all the Epi-guys they could grab
- Newest Epinions Community Care employee Tomiko Roman made her first Meet and Greet appearance and came home unscathed
- Pvreditor brought his guitar and entertained the masses

Even though the New York Meet and Greet is still fresh in the minds of those who attended, we're ready to announce that on June 17th, Epinions will host the next Meet and Greet in Las Vegas.
The RSVP will be up soon but in the meantime, there’s another event that members might be interested in. If you are a part of the eBay community, or just interested in eBay, you might want to attend eBay’s annual eBay Live! at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas from June 13th through June 15th. The 12th Epinions Meet and Greet will follow on June 17th.

New Books CL

Longtime member and original Category Lead, GraceF has stepped down as one of the Books Category Leads. She has been a dedicated member who has always looked out for what was best for Epinions. She will still be around, but does not feel like she has the time to currently hold her post as Category Lead. We thank GraceF for all that she has done.
Pearannoyed has agreed to step in and join ArianeJ and Redlass in books. She has been an Advisor and Top Reviewer in the category as well as a message board moderator. We welcome Pearannoyed and wish her success in her new role.

New York Meet And Greet 2006 - Back To NYC

Ever since our second official Meet and Greet in New York, members have been asking us to come back to the city. After over 2 years, we are coming back. Members also asked if we could hold the event in the same place that we held the first New York Meet And Greet. Thanks to Christal's fine negotiating skills, that has been made official as well. On March 25, 2006, the second New York Meet and Greet will be held at the ESPN Zone in Times Square. It's still early, but the weeks will go by quickly. Hurry up and get those RSVP's in. We'll give out more details soon, such as which possible prize we may be raffling off or what type of schwag we're bringing.

Epinions Meet And Greet - Back To New York

In September 2003, we went to New York for the second Epinions Meet and Greet. It was the event that shaped how we would continue to host them in the future. It was held at the ESPN Sports Zone in Times Square and was a very memorable event.
On March 25, 2006, we'll go back to New York City to host another event. We will continue to follow up with details here, but we wanted to get the word out early. It should be a blast and we're looking forward to it. Clear those schedules.
