After such a great member response in December, we're going to keep 10 4 10 going through January. It is completely separate from December's 10 4 10, so you'll be starting from scratch again.
Here's what we posted in December. The same rules apply.
Write 10 product reviews and you'll earn $10! Or write 20 product reviews and receive $20! Or 30, or 40, or... well, you get the picture. Earn up to $100 writing product reviews for Epinions! There is no submission process necessary. Just write and you're automatically entered!

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we thought it'd be a great idea to extend the giving. We're giving you yet another reason to write first reviews and submit them into the sweepstakes. This month, we'll send America's Second Harvest—The Nation's Food Bank Network $1 for every first review submitted into the November 2007 First Review Sweepstakes Write-off.

New Category Leads in Games and Books

We have added two new Category Leads to the CL ranks. Jeremy1456 has been writing video game reviews since April of 2001. He has great gaming knowledge, a calm demeanor and is a perfect fit to go alongside KJell1979. Panguitch is going to join Pearannoyed and Arianej in Books and Magazine Subscriptions. Panguitch is a very respected member and we are lucky to have him.
With the joy of adding new Category Leads to the mix comes the sadness of saying goodbye to now former CLs who they are replacing. 32_footsteps and Redlass were pioneering CLs in their respective categories. They gave us great feedback and helped make the CL program what it is today. Even though real life and other commitments caused them to step down from their roles, we hope that they will continue to bring their positive influences to the site.

Au Revoir.
After 7 ½ years with Epinions.com, it is time for me to bid you all farewell. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Being able to work with such a passionate and dedicated community has taught me a lot. You are all amazing!
You are in good hands with Garrett, so be kind to him and the rest of the Epinions staff. I won’t be too far and hope to continue to keep in contact with you all through out the site.

Somewhat Helpful Reviews Are Now Visible To Shoppers

We're pleased to announce that "Somewhat Helpful" or SH-rated reviews are now visible by default to our logged-out visitors. Showing these reviews to the public offers shoppers more reviews about the products they're interested in while allowing more reviewers to make their voices heard more easily. We believe this makes Epinions more valuable to shoppers and a more inclusive community, especially for new members. The key to this decision is in the name of the rating itself. If the content offers at least some help to someone, it will no longer be hidden from view.
Epinions has the best user-submitted reviews on the 'net. It's become clear over time that SH reviews on Epinions are, generally speaking, as good as most user-submitted reviews on other sites. While SH reviews have a place on Epinions, we plan to keep the bar high. We'll continue rewarding great content first and foremost and fostering the best community of writers online.
Somewhat Helpful reviews will be shown below Helpful and Very Helpful, and they will not be eligible for Income Share. We expect them to have very little impact on our best reviews and top authors. We needed to address the needs of newer members who are often shocked to find their brief but on-topic review "deleted" from the site by an SH rating, as well as the needs of shoppers who continue to ask us for more reviews on each product. There was also a general contradiction in the fact that we did display "Show" rated express reviews to the public, which are often of a equivalent or even lower quality than SH reviews. We believe this decision will resolve much confusion and make for a richer experience on Epinions.

Farewell Epinions From Tomiko

Dear Community,
The time has come for me to move on to my next adventure.
Although I will no longer be part of the beloved Epi-Staff, I promise to remain an active member on the site and will make sure I say "hello" as often as I can.
I have had an absolute blast working for Epinions and getting to know all of you!!!
Nearly every interaction I have had with this Community has been memorable, but I must say there are a few that truly stand out.-
My first introduction to the Community - the New York M&G - best times ever!

approval
- Watching the message boards flare up and being deathly afraid to step in
- Answering the Abuse emails, trying to be as fair and accurate as humanly possible

Dinner With Pehr In Boston

In March, we met members for dinner in Washington D.C. and Chicago. It was Epinions General Manager Pehr Luedtke's first opportunity to talk to members and it was an eye opener for him. He was able to grasp in person what he'd been hearing about the community. It was a great experience.
Since Pehr will be attending eBay Live! 2007 in Boston in mid June, he wants to have another dinner with Epinions members. It is scheduled to be on Thursday night June 14th, but the time and place are still to be determined.

Epinions Community Day

Dear Epinions Community,
I recently have been thinking a lot about our community (as if this is any different from any day of the week) and how pioneering we have been in this Internet space ever since the creation of Epinions in 1999. I thought that it'd be awesome if we picked one day in the summer and on that day, everyone decided to have a party in the name of Epinions. A little out there right? Maybe instead, it would work if at least twenty community members held their own Meet and Greet on that day all across the US and internationally where we have members. These members could act as hosts and be party planners, gathering all of the members in their area together. And we could write about the event and tally up all the members who celebrated in the name of Epinions. After talking to several of the Epinions staff and throwing the idea around with a few members, it became reality. Epinions Community Day was born.
I asked Category Leads, Moderators, members who had been to several Meet and Greets, and also members who have held their own Meet and Greets to see if they wanted to help me in hosting their events. I gave them the responsibility of choosing where to have it, coming up with the type of event they'd like to hold, and communicating with the membership to get their event going. We've put together a collaborative blog and you can read my first post in which I go into more detail at the bottom of this entry.
In the next week, we'll choose a date in which we'll declare Epinions Community Day and continue planning all the events. We will also update the blog with more posts about how each event is going. If you would like to host an event, send me an e-mail. You don't have to be a Category Lead or Moderator to host an event. They were just the first members I asked. You can also e-mail me if you have any questions about the event.
It's going to be a lot of fun and I hope you can find some time in your schedule or planner in the summer to celebrate with us on Epinions Community Day.

First off, we want to thank everyone who participated in the 10 For 10 promotion in March. Major kudos go to the members who were able to write more than their normal number of reviews. Also, thanks to the Advisors (as well as raters who don't have the hat) who all of a sudden had many more reviews to rate during the month. Pattytherre has been selected as the new Category Lead in Online Stores and Services. She's brings a lot of experience to the category, being an Advisor and Top Reviewer for many terms.
Amykhar has stepped down from her CL post that she has held since the inception of the program. She first started as a CL in Computers and Business & Technology and then joined Joubert in Online Stores and Services. We want to thank Amykhar, who has been a member for over 7 years, for her contribution as a CL and hope that she continues to participate on the site.

Check your calendar and clear your schedule in March as dinner is on Epinions! And new Epinions General Manager Pehr Luedtke especially wants to meet you.
We have two special events coming up for members close to the Chicago and Washington D.C. areas. Pehr, Community Liaison Garrett Gonzales, and Community Care Manager Christal Calderon are hosting two dinners for members and a guest.
The first dinner will be on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 in Chicago, IL. We will be in Washington D.C. just one day later, on Thursday, March 15, 2007 hosting a second dinner.

Today we launched a shopper satisfaction survey to Epinions.com to help us better understand the folks who come to Epinions to read reviews and research products.
Every member of Epinions works hard to help people make better buying decisions, and this survey will give us better information on what shoppers are looking for, how they use the site, and what problems they're having. The ultimate goal of all this is to understand our audience better so we can improve our service and grow the audience for your reviews.
You will not see the survey unless you log out of the site. It's intended for shoppers - people who come to Epinions to read reviews and research products, and we wanted to keep it out of your way.
We're asking members not to use the shopper survey as a means to give us feedback about community issues, writing, rating, the product catalog, or other issues they have. This could muddle the data we collect about our shoppers and skew the picture.

There is a brand new tool to help you make sure your reviews are on the correct products.-
If your review is on the incorrect product, first click on the link to your review.
- In the same box that you would update your review, there's now a link called "Move".
- If you click "Move", you will be shown a box in which to put in the correct product URL. This is where you will move your review to. ( Example: http://www.epinions.com/Toshiba_37HL95_Television)
- You will see a screen which allows you to verify your move.
- If it is correct, hit the "Move!" button.
You can only move your own reviews.
If you see any issues with the "Move" tool, please file a bug.

Atlanta Meet & Greet Wrap Up

Better late than never. On November 11th, 2006 Epinions invaded Atlanta, Georgia for the 13th edition of the Epinions Meet and Greet. The event was held at Jocks And Jills in the CNN Center. Here are several notes from the event.

Dear Epinions Community Members:
I am writing to introduce myself as a new member of the Epinions team. As of January 2nd, I assumed the newly created role of General Manager of Epinions. In this capacity, I will have overall responsibility for Epinions - strategic direction, site experience for both shoppers and buyers, community care, and financial performance of the business.
At the outset, let me say what an honor it is for me to be in this job! You, the community, are an amazing group and I am inspired by the energy you bring to Epinions every day. The content that you have generated is unparalleled; nowhere on or offline can a buyer find helpful reviews like those found on Epinions. Pause for a second and think about what a truly remarkable achievement that is. Thank you!
My primary job - and the primary job of everyone who works with me in Brisbane - is to enable you to contribute frequently, passionately, and easily.
I also look forward to getting to know you, whether it be in person, over the phone, or electronically. Although I already share your appreciation for high quality writing (I am the child of two English teachers who starting red-lining my reports in 2nd grade), it will take me a while to understand the unique DNA of this community, so I ask for your patience. But I hope in the coming months to talk with many of you and to introduce myself in a less formal manner.
The establishment of my position represents a commitment by Shopping.com (and, by association, eBay) to increase the investment in and focus on Epinions. In a meeting several weeks ago, I called Epinions "an unvarnished jewel in the eBay crown." I truly believe that we can achieve great things in the coming months and years.
Though I am the ultimate decision maker for Epinions (in Bush lingo, "The Decider"), two things are very clear to me:
- This is our site. The success of this product depends almost entirely on the healthy stream of interesting, relevant content that comes from you - so please review all those holiday gifts ... ;) As I make decisions, know that I will have the interest of the reviewers in the forefront of my mind.
- I am fortunate to have a great team. You all know Andy, Garrett, Christal, Tomiko and Greg, probably better than I do. They remain core members of Epinions, and I am lucky to be working with them. Please continue to use them as a resource; I know I will.
I recognize that there have been challenges and frustrations in the recent past. And I assure you that there will be challenges and frustrations in the coming year - this is a natural part of being at the forefront of a fast-moving, exciting space! What I can also assure you is that I am unwavering in my commitment to Epinions - and my team shares this dedication. Emerson was right when he wrote, "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm."
