Sears Kenmore Elite Dryer Won't Run If Start Button Released
We purchased a Kenmore Elite Dryer Model #110.63932102 in June 2003. The other day when I pushed the start button and let go the dryer started for a moment and then stopped. If I hold the start button in the dryer will run, but if I let go it will stop.
I have done some research on this problem and there appears to be a "service flash" Sears term for a special service bulletin on this problem. I am trying the find out the "service flash" number and/or a copy of the service flash itself.
There is no excuse for a dryer to stop working after 18 months.
I look forward to you help in this matter. |

I don't think that there's much help we can give. Is the dryer still under warranty? If so, that's your best bet. If it's not under warranty and Sears doesn't agree that there is a product defect that calls for general replacement, it sounds like you will either have to pay for a repair or buy a new dryer.
It's possible that someone here has had the same problem and knows what button to push to get Sears to fix this. Sorry about the disappointing problem, though.

Problem with Kenmore Elite Dryer
We are having the same problem with our dryer. Model number is 110.63952102.
Its starting to look like Sears needs to address this problem and not over look it.
Any help would be great.
If you know of anyone else having this problem, please have them post a reply.

Kenmore Dryer won't run
We have had a similar problem with our dryer. It stops in the middle of the cycle and will start again if the start put is pushed. Usually, it stops again after a few minutes. After restarting it several times, it will usually eventually continue to run. I finally had Sears come out to look at it. The technician said it was the timer and wanted over $200 to change it. I said no, bought the timer myself for $60. It took about 10 minutes to change it, so the labor charge that Sears wanted to charge was outrageous. However, this did not fix the problem. I have finally decided to buy a new dryer. |

I called sears and was given the run around by the store I bought it from, the repair center, the national complaint center,... I spent about 3 hours total on the phone. The part is $100 from repairclinic.com and it only took me 20 minutes to install it. If you are handy and can open up your dryer--you can just replace the computer part. Go to http://applianceblog.com/forums/ to see what I have done and what others in our situation have done.
Good Luck

RE: Problem with Kenmore Elite Dryer
Thanks for posting this info about the do-it-yourself fix. I'm an avid DIYer and apprecitate that sort of information.
I hope the new switch/timer lasts longer than the old one.

Kenmore Elite Dryer Won't Run
It sounds like the part you are referring to is the what Sears calls the Even Heat Control Assembly, a circuit board. I decided that was the problem with my dryer before I had a Sears tech come out. I bought the board from Sears for $137 with shipping and taxes. It did not solve the problem. Actually made it a little worse in that the dryer would not restart unless the timer was first set back to zero and then reset. I returned the part. Perhaps I got a bad par

RE: Kenmore Elite Dryer Won't Run
Whoops! You guys are scaring me. I've got an older Kenmore Dryer and, believe me, every time I push that Start button and it works, I thank my lucky stars.
I hope this gets settled for you all and, I agree, Sears needs to tackle this one head on.
Good luck,

RE: Kenmore Dryer won't run
My Kenmore Gas Dryer (Model 110.70832990) is only 4.5 years, and was working fine all the time. Today all the sudden it stopped running, the light is still on (electricity is still on), and hot air still comes out after I push the start button, it is just the drum is not spinning anymore (feel like the motor or its control is dead). Any idea?
Thanks a lot!

RE: Kenmore Dryer won't run
It could be a variety of things, including something similar to what the people above are reporting. If you feel comfortable poking around inside the dryer, you might check to see if there is an internal circuit breaker for the motor.
The couple of times I've had dryers open, I noticed they used l-o-n-g rubber belts (much like a car's fan belt) to transfer power from the motor to the drum. In one case, the belt was so badly cracked that I was shocked it still held together. I replaced the belt (it was very cheap), cleaned out all the wads of lint and lubricated the bearings, and the dryer ran like a top for another couple years before I sold the house and the dryer with it. If the belt breaks (or jumps off the pulley), the drum won't turn. However, you'd probably hear the motor running.
The most likely problems are either the controller module (which is the problem mentioned above), a popped motor circuit breaker or a bad motor. Without sticking my fingers in it, it's hard to say which.

RE: Kenmore Dryer won't run
I have a slightly different problem with my 13-month old Kenmore dryer (just out of warranty, of course). The timer doesn't seem to work. You set it on 20 minutes and it runs fine, it just never counts down and turns itself off. You have to remember to do it yourself. I am inclined to just buy a new timer (there are several sellers on eBay) and change it myself, but I am interested to find out if anyone has tried this and how difficult it is to do (I am semi-handy!). |

Replacing something like that is pretty straightforward in my experience and I'd encourage you to try it yourself. Obviously, make sure you unplug the dryer from its electrical power before you start. These appliances are really not very complicated, and there's usually a lot of room to work and easy press-on/pull-off connections. You will need a couple of screwdrivers and maybe a pair of needlenose pliers. It's possible that you will need a 1/4-inch nutdriver.
Although you might find a tempting price on E-Bay, I suggest that you try Sears. I've had good luck ordering appliance parts from Sears, even for appliances that are not one of Sears' brands. The parts prices are always lower than I expect, which is a good thing.
Good luck!

RE: Sears Kenmore Elite Dryer Won't Run If Start Button Released
Same problem with model 11063932102. Called Sears about it. The phone rep did indeed have a service flash and indicated that it would be fixed free of charge. It would take a week for a tech to be available, so I asked if Sears would simply reimburse me for the circuit board if I fixed it myself ($116.00 at Sears.com). She indicated that would not be possible, the only way to get the free repair was for the service tech to do it.
So a week passes, the tech shows up, and indicates the repair is NOT covered for this model after all. I am not in town, and my other half is not electronically minded, so all that can be done is to accept the tech's word and pay for the repair - $362.47 in parts and labor. You can buy a new dryer for that kind of money.
Sears agreed to refund part of the labor cost ($80) after several calls to complain.
Clearly this part is not designed correctly. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before each and every one of this revision of that controller board fails. Everyone makes mistakes, but what I cannot accept is that A) Sears will not stand behind the product, and B) they misled us into believing they would, and then reneged. |

This was the same situation I faced with my GE microwave oven. The magnetron fried after four years and GE had a 10-year warranty on the magnetron. (That's the device in the oven that creates the microwave energy.) GE said it could not send me the part; the only way to make a warranty claim was to have a technician come out to examine the oven and there would be a stiff fee for that service call.
I ended up disassembling the oven, digging out the bad part, buying a replacement on the Internet and reassembling everything. It has now worked fine for about a year and the part cost me less than the technician's service call.
I can understand your gripe. You should send a stiff letter to Sears, if only for the satisfaction.

Kenmore Dryer 90 series - works only when the button is kept pushed
Our Kenmore 90 series dryer only woks when the button is kept pushed down.
We had a repair guy come in - he diagnosed - that motor has two modes the running mode and starting mode.
The starting mode starts the drum rolling - and then the normal running mode kicks in. This also starts the heating circuit. However the running mode is not coming on. He will need to replace the motor part costs $101 labor $137 = total $237.
Hope that fixes it... |

I'm strictly an amateur at these things but the explanation you received sounds like two pounds of baloney. However, the prices you received are in the ballpark for what it takes to get a repairman out and the problem solved; if you're being ripped off, it's not by much.
Motors do have a starting cycle but they are designed to have just a single set of wires that starts the motor and keeps it running. (Some types of electric motors need an extra shot of power when they start... that's why your lights flicker when the fridge kicks on.) However, I don't have personal experience with this series of appliances so I can speak only in generalities.

So what's the verdict???
Hi, I just Googled my Kenmore dryer model 110.63932101 & the phrase 'Kenmore dryer won't run' and I see a bunch of boards like this with other people having the exact same problem as me...dryer gets about 2 yrs old, give or take, and it won't keep running unless you hold the start button down. This is insane.
In reading the posts, it seems like many people have the same problem, but have various DIY ways to try and fix it, some that didn't work, and varying stories from Sears on how to fix it, and varying costs associated with it.
If Sears won't offer some assistance to fix, I'm inclined to just replace the part myself, but I can't seem to nail down which part is going bad here.
Can someone that did get theirs fixed come back and clearly state what was done to fix it? Either by themselves, or the repairman?
THANKS!!!
Karz |

KENMORE 63952-CRAP!
Having the same problem with the start button not working. Once you release the button the machine shuts off. Called Sears and was on the phone for 3 plus hours in between the recall dept., the cutomer service dept., and parts. They could never find a service flash on our model. 110.63952.102 because the last 3 #'s are 102 and not 101! I guess the model .101 has a service flash. There is no difference between the 2 models, only ours is updated! We have a tech coming out Friday and if states it is the even heat control board, which has been the problem with everyone's I will go nuts because we could have fixed it today ourselves and be done with it! SEARS is screwing us over.
Please call and let them know of the problem NOW because if you don't they cannot document the service problems. Maybe if everyone calls in the next few days they can get a recall started! PLEASE**** we paid 500.00 for this dryer 18 months ago and this part will cost 120.00! This is insane! |
