If I was going to write a review on this new search engine--it would be lucky to get one star. Punch in a golf club by specifics, and it gives me all the stores and no reviews. Punch it in by brand name and it lists a whole lot of "Related Deals"--but again--no reviews. Is corporate actually consolidating the sites, and then dumping the Epinions deal all together? It would be nice to know the truth on this one, as the end of year "Bonus Surprise" still sticks mightily in my craw. Are we about to have an end of the year--"So Long Suckers Surprise."
Seriously--many searches have provided no reviews--just lots of "Related Deals." If this search engine were going to get a review--I'd have to give it one star---and that would be quite generous. Hopefully, I am over-reacting, so please prove me wrong by giving the reviews priority over the "Related Deals." So far, I have yet to find a review by home page.....mostly access has been gained through my account links. |

A 'shoppers' look...
...
Hey, just one isolated 'check' of the site.
From the home page search box I typed in 'Dirt Devil', pretending I am vacuum cleaner shopping.
First page: "We found 255 results for Vacuums > 'dirt devil' "
17 pages displaying those 255 results follow. I searched quickly through a few of them down to page 17. All seemed to various permutations of 'dirt devil' vacuums.
Each entry seemed to display the '9 consumer reviews' as always.
As has already been suggested in this thread, I believe: please, a little patience please people. If you encounter stuff that does not work, report it. Give 'em a chance to work things out for crying out loud.

Atleast One More Question...
As I pluck around the site, I'm trying to get use to everything.
Okay let me use this as an example:
http://www0.epinions.com/search/?submitted_form=searchbar&search_string=Sip+%26+Smile+Cup&tax_name=&dyn_nav=0&dyn_nav_id=&search_vertical=all
If you look at the page there are various listings for what I searched for, "Sip & Smile Cup", but none of them say whether or not there are reviews on the cup. The second listing which has no picture does have reviews if you follow the link, but why doesn't it 'say' there are reviews from the search results? Will this be fixed (in time)?
I'll be back if I think of any other questions...

Some problems like this existed before the upgrade, but I agree it looks like there are more of them than there used to be.

Bug Report Bug...
Tried a couple of times to report reviews that have disappeared today. When I hit "submit feedback", it states that there is an error. Using the review feedback button to see what the problem is, gets me back to a blank report.
I checked after each submission to make sure all info was filled in and correct and still got the error message.
I know there are a lot of reports being filed. Is the system just busy?
Is there a bug report for the bug report? ;)

As I said, I hope I'm over reacting-and as you can tell from my paranoia, I've been through many a corporate merger in my chequered past. I am hoping that things will be fixed. Lately I've been averaging 260 hits a day....after the new search machine thingy kicked in--I had barely 100 hits. All I can say is----OOOOOOOPS! Hope things work well soon. Thanks. |

Part of the reason your hits went down is because the actual site was down for a big part of Monday and Tuesday morning.

I just wanted to say thanks to Brisbane. I know this wasn't easy and hopefully folks will ease up a bit. To members: chill out and drink a cold brewski on Halloween and take a break from Epinions for a few days if things are buggin' you.
Just be happy the earthquake wasn't bigger and we didn't lose contact with our folks in the Bay Area. I guess hearing this news made me go back in time when I worked for a software company in Portland that had just down a major release on the eve of the '89 quake and every customer was screaming at us the next week because their shipments were delayed. Not fun.
So chill people chill!

Yeah I remember seeing this in books when I wrote my first reviews over there, but I don't know that I have ever seen it in K&F... Its really confusing with the duplicates, however.

None of this affects me too much because I get paid so little on any of my reviews over the past couple years...getting paid 2 cents a month on a review instead of 3 cents really doesn't make a difference.

Wasn't there some kind of planning like system testing, integration testing, user acceptance testing, etc. on a test system so all the categories on Shopping.com would be set up before this went live and so the impact wouldn't be so great. Again, this doesn't really affect me too much, but it seems to me that some members are going to get severely underpaid for a while because for some many of their reviews won't be available in the Epinions search. |

I'd think that many high-paying reviews with lots of hits are garnering most of their traffic from outside search engines like Google and in that case, I don't think these changes will make all that much difference. Our reviews are still there and still indexed into the outside search engines and will continue to be shown in results so we'll continue to get those visits.
As for the Epinions search, could we find our reviews with the old search anyway? I know a lot of my stuff never came up when I looked for it with the old search.
I think our advice for people who were looking for things was always to google the site - that was the only way to find certain listings anyway. So hopefully as the new database 'learns' it'll get better.

No answers but...
Despite the explanation that my avg 250+hits over the past couple of months dropped to 100 was due to the search engine putting the system to sleep for a day and 1/2 all I can say is--24 hrs w/search engine and system full up, all I got over the past 24 hrs was 112 hits. Please tell me this will not be an ongoing situation. 60% drop in possible revenues is a shocker to this ex-Operations Manager.
I don't want to come off too gripey, but seriously folks, the state cut the grants which paid my night school gig, so this actually subsidizes income that was lost, and helps buy school supplies for needy urban children. I teach at an alternative ed. campus in the daytime, where the only jewelry worn is the ankle bracelets that let these kid's Parole Officers know where they are. If it was the $50.00 a month for extra rounds of golf etc....I would not be anywhere near as hyped up about it. I apprecitae the speed with which you are working on this massive project, but there are a couple of hundred kids behind me that would love to see this working up back to snuff A.S.A.P....None-the-less--Thanks for all you do, because as an Ex-Ops Manager--I know it ain't easy. |

I didn't think that the hits had updated yet today. Unless they dropped way off - I thought my total hits were the same as yesterday. Perhaps I'm just not remembering the general total number correctly from yesterday. If they haven't updated yet, it's hard to judge what kind of impact there was on the 1st full day of the new search engine.

Just curious....
In the old search engine my old review for hotel didn't come up...and if I cut and paste the name of the hotel from my review: Summerfield Suites Whiteplains it still doesn't come up in the search. The only Summerfield Suites that comes up in a search is one review of a Summerfield Suites in Miami. Why is that?
(and by the way...I apologize in advance if I wasn't supposed to put in the name of the hotel...it's not a link to my review nor the title of my review).
