The Beauty/Wellness Category

We're dying over there. Literally. There are no outside hits and our old reviews are dead. Is this the only category with Top Reviewers and Advisors that feel like red-headed stepchildren (thanks to Patty for that term that pretty much sums it up!)?

I don't know what has been discussed at length on the boards, but are there any other categories that are dying? Is the Beauty/Wellness category being ignored? Or are we on our way out? Don't worry, we can take the news. We'd just like *some* news.

If anyone in Eps management sees this, can we get some insight?

...sigh...

Not about your post or my reaction to it . . .just a general sigh for the ongoing frustration of the community.

Perhaps your best bet would be to e-mail Andy and ask these same questions. Not sure he will share anymore privately than he could or would publicly . . .but at least you would have it from the horse's mouth.

But just to add to the litany of user examples shared here on the boards over the last few months:

A recent movie review of mine:

No /review in the product URL..
written March, 2008

March 08: ... 54 / 283
April 08: ... 27 / 695

An old well-read books review:

again no /review in product URL:

Jan 08..: ... 1 / 40
Feb 08..: ... 2 / 58
March 08: ... 4 / 142
April 08: ... 0 / 113

So obviously, I am still drawing hits on those products, even rebounding somewhat.

While two books in March 2008, with /review in the URL show:

46 / 46 ...and 46 / 47

Just another brick in the wall...

...tom...
.

Don't feel bad the Restaurant and Gourmet category has been that way since October. So you are not alone.

RE: The Beauty/Wellness Category

All of the categories that were changed over on Black Tuesday in Home and Garden are messed up with either many fewer hits showing, no IS even with hits similar to before Black Tuesday, or hits not being fully counted on many of the reviews with the /review in the url. Starting in February it seems other categories, at least where I write, were being newly infected with the Black Tuesday virus. Starting in March it seems every new review has been infected, for me at least.

I have never seen a public acknowledgement by Epinions that, for many catgegories, hits are not being accurately counted and IS fairly distributed, but it sure seems that most members think that is the case.

RE: The Beauty/Wellness Category

Thanks for all of the responses. I came back this morning wondering if I was going to see a bunch of members yelling at me for asking that question - but I should have known better! :) I appreciate all of the responses and I am glad to see that we are not alone over there. I do read the message boards a couple of times a week but I don't recall anything being discussed about this recently. I'm frustrated but am trying to hang in there. Thanks again!

Inaccurate hit counting is sort of acknowledged here, though it seems that the problems are much more extensive than what's implied here.

I've written in Movies, Music, Pets, Restaurants and Musical Equipment this year, and with perhaps 2 or 3 exceptions, every single review has been limited to members hits only.

You are not the only one frustrated by a lack of outside hits.

It's not just you, most of the reviews in Pets are not getting outside hits either. On a side note, seems like all the newer Pet reviews have either /reviews/ or /review/ in the url.

I have more than once remarked upon structural mistakes in the current hit counting (when it kind of works) on epinions.com 2.0, as well as how hits are slanted by the TR Boost.
These issues exist, despite the fact that lap0530 and I spent a whole series of opinions on the errors in the epinions.com 1.0 hit counting system..., and had to reveal that what answer we got from "Community Care" happened to be plain wrong.

It seems fair to say that Epinions.com has had trouble counting hits since the early days :-(

RE: Dead Categories

Apparently, we have LOTS of red headed step children at Epinions!

However, I see no issues in the Online category except FINDING the sites to read reviews. But I have seen outside hits and garnered IS from that category. (Shameless plug. Heh.)

I was going to move some of my beauty reviews to new listings but they, too, have /review(s)/ in the URL so I just left them where they were. I am hoping this isn't a forever thing. I just wrote an extensive beauty review that will more than likely never be seen and it's on a hot product that I know people care about. Bummer.

I guess the only thing to do is to hang in there and hope they are working furiously behind the scenes to fix the bugs.

I hope so...Now I just hate it when I post a new review and see that /review/ in the url like the pet food review I just wrote...

Question, would it stop you from writing in those categories knowing this now?

Product links with a /review/ in the URL tend to kill my interest in writing a review.

If what is the important Eps egoboo for you (it is for me) is that others are reading what you wrote and making decisions from it, the hit counts on these reviews are apparently not accurately reflecting the actual reads by non-members (and maybe members) after the first few days.

I give as an example a review I wrote recently in Tools and Accessories. It has garnered only five outside hits (those in the first three days after publishing) according to the stats. I am absolutely certain that ten other non-members read the review in a two day period and pretty certain, based on comments from a fan board where the review is linked, that at least a couple dozen more have read the review.

Considering the extensive complaining by members about lower hit totals since Black Tuesday, I would expect this to be reflected in significantly lower overall page views of Epinions. According to Alexis the page views have not taken a nose dive since October so that is more evidence to me that they are just not being credited to us.

Since I have always felt good about reviews with outside hits and that are showing some IS (since this counts for me as helping Epinions bottom line) I just don't have much incentive to add new reviews when they don't appear to be doing either.

The 10-4-20 only irritates me since if I want to write for pay I can earn significantly more on a per word, one time pay basis elsewhere than the two cents per word that Epinions is offering, so there really is little incentive for me to write right now, especially since I see little real evidence that any of this will be fixed or even the problems fully acknowledged.

A much more serious problem

Like the rest of you, my outside hits have collapsed. However, I don't think the hit counts are wrong. Oh no, I think it's considerably more serious than that. The hit counts are accurate. Our reviews have become invisible to visitors.

As non-members find less and less relevant content here, they'll likely come back less often. Would you do otherwise?

I wrote my first review here because this is where I found reviews that convinced me to buy it. Had I never found the item on Epinions there would not have been a first review written.

Even if you know the URL? Darn!

Oh well, if not, you can try to follow the links on this page about epinions.com hits, but I'd offer that today, the most interesting about those pieces is that they date from 2000, and that the counting of hits has apparently not become more reliable since :-(

Products links with any URL tend to kill my interest in writing a review right now :)

Honestly, except for this challenge I got "roped" into, so far that's the only one I plan to write this month.

Not to sound *down* but I am sort of confused by what I see on my reviews/hits, so until I see some sort of explanation & with this being a super busy month in the life of special education teacher anyway, I think it was a sign not to write this month.

RE: Dead Categories

I have been looking over my reviews written in 2008 so far to try to determine what is going on. As has been indicated in this and previous threads there are a lot of site problems that can conspire to make us unhappy in the apparent reception of even our VH reviews.

The first review was on a book. When I put the listing title into Eps search I find the book and the review. When I enter just the one word title of the book I get a lot of hits, but when I isolate to Books it shows as the second listing with the review and rating stars showing. On Google the first link is second on the second page and gets us to the review. The next Google listing is a link to the SdC product listing. There I find a link to my review. The word "review" does not appear in the url of the listing on Eps. I am getting what seems like normal hits and IS for this type of review. Hits from mid-January to end of April are 62/121 and IS through March is $0.78, If all of my reviews were like this one, which was the norm before Black Tuesday, I would be very happy.

The next is in Home and Garden. It shows as cutlery and is a SAP add. It shows It has 46/51 hits since early February and IS is $0.00. It has "review" in the url and is typical of those not getting accurate hits and not getting IS because it is in one of the orphan categories created on Black Tuesday. It also does not add the hits to my overall in H&G.

The next one is in Computer Hardware and is performing like the first one.

The next one is in Tools and Accessories and is mimicking the one in Cutlery. This is one I have factual proof that is not counting hits that it is getting.

The next two, in Books, have review in the url. They can not be found any way I have tried, using the Eps search engine. They can not be moved to another listing (there are three) using the Move function. They are showing no outside hits. They don't appear on the first ten pages of Google, I assume because they are not getting any page hits.

The next one, a Book, is like the first one, but is getting few outside hits, probably because it is an old novel.

The final one, in Restaurants and Gourmet, does not have "review" in the url. It can not be found with Epinions search and is on page eleven on Google. I don't expect it to do well, either.

This is typical of my entire inventory of reviews. Since nearly two-thirds of them have "review" in the url, I am down to less than a fourth of daily hits compared to October last year. My IS is well below equivalent months last year. My MPA position is falling because the few hits that are being recorded are not being counted in H&G. what about this would motivate me to write more reviews?

Toys....I can't imagine some of them NOT getting hits but none are. NONE! All have /review in the links. Ok I lied one has made 1 penny and had 3 outside hits I think. But that is it! This includes the BOOKS that come up under toys!

this gi-normous file somewhere, filled with the numbers for the outside hits and one day - everything will magically get updated. Cause to think that they aren't even tracking these hits - well - devastating.

I share much the same view (at least that's what I hope!), but while I'm positive about the hits eventually being resolved, I will miss all the potential IS that we're losing by not having anything tracked.

This so accurately describes my attitude these days. I am finding that I'm inspired to write only enough to maintain my hats. Isn't that sad?

And the 10-4-10/20? In my more cynical moments I see this promotion as a diversionary tactic. Something to take our minds off all that is wrong these days.

Sure, I can bang out reviews, but I still find myself spending at least an hour writing a review. If no one on the outside reads it I'm going to make $2/hour (at best)for my critical analysis and writing. Somehow, I find it hard not to be offended.

Looking at the "just ins", I see reviews on Baby Ruth candy bars and Cheerios. Now I may be atypical, but I've never really felt the need to seek review advice on such items. Have you?

It might be easy to take this post as a knock of Epinions. It's not. Epinions is not merely a system, but a community of the most talented critical writers on the Internet and a vast library of excellent reviews. These are the two most valuable assets of the site.

The system that supports these assets are the "mechanics" of the site. And, no matter what shade of rose the glasses you're wearing these days are, it's hard not to feel that the mechanics are failing us miserably.

Is there anyone out there that can tell me they don't really feel the same?

But my travel reviews are getting outside hits, perhaps due to not having /review in the url. Some are even showing up in google searches without me keying in Epinions. That's good news in my book.

As Stacey says, Beauty does feel like a dying category.

Rudy, I have felt that often and shake it off but still, I sometimes feel we are like lemmings, going for the $2 and writing about anything, hence cheerios or cookies to try to forget about the big issues that still haven't been addressed, has anyone noticed there haven't been any comments by Brisbane lately. My hits have dropped off as much as anyone else and I lost my #10 spot in travel this month, oh one more thing, I wonder why my MPR number stayed the same as last month..guess that is another number not being counted

Looking at the "just ins", I see reviews on Baby Ruth candy bars and Cheerios. Now I may be atypical, but I've never really felt the need to seek review advice on such items. Have you?

NO, but now I'm writing them for the ease of doing so and the fun of writing about candy...do I think anyone comes on the site to research buying such a food item?...another big NO! But I still like the challange of a movie, restaurant or travel review

Thats the saddest and most infuriating part

Is there anyone out there that can tell me they don't really feel the same?

I feel that way yes, but there are some who just don't care about these things, all they want is the money the promotions are providing....once the 10 4 10 is over I just know there will be quite a few people who will disappear..

RE: The Beauty/Wellness Category

The travel reviews I did have gotten hits too even ones I didn't suspect would being in such a far away in a cornfield place! BUT the kinds of hits you guys are speaking of (hundreds), I have never seen. I am happy with 50 hits a month on anything!

But my travel reviews are getting outside hits, perhaps due to not having /review in the url. Some are even showing up in google searches without me keying in Epinions. That's good news in my book.

As Stacey says, Beauty does feel like a dying category.

I tried to do new candies on the market or slightly unusual ones that I have tried....there are many people who do order online now and get their groceries dropped off...what is that site? peapod? I don't know.

I think a lot of us feel that way. I've tried to stay positive but it's hard as month after month goes by and these things don't seem to be getting any better.

That's the problem. I can count on one hand the reviews I have done since November that have accumulated even that amount.

...

This is a large reason why I'm not wasting my time writing reviews anymore.

My old reviews are pretty much dead. Reviews that used to get 210 outside hits a month are barely averaging 30. Reviews that would get 40 are down to a couple and it's been this way since October. It's amazing to look at the consistent numbers for a year, then watch them drop like a rock in one month.

I might write some just to make the $20 for 10 reviews but it is a systemic problem that needs to be addressed or Epinions' will lose out big time in the long run.

Or in some cases getting worse. I have a tent review that used to get 10 outside hits/day this time of year. This April I had a total of 44 outside hits for the whole month, compared to almost 400 a year ago. No outside hits so far this May, which is usually another huge month :( -Dave

My older travel reviews seem to be picking up some hits on the destinations that are popular now that summer is coming. Disney World reviews just are so-so, which surprises me, but some of the European reviews are dead, reviews that used to get tons of outside hits and I know they have good placement on the site and even on google they show up.

Cruises seem to still get hits but only sporatically and one of my cruise reviews was my highest earner at one time..

forget about those food reviews, as far as I'm concerned they are only good for the 10 4 10 and I have a good number of hits on them, not outside hits ofcourse...hopefully that will prove to be wrong one day and the big black zeros will disappear and be replaced by a number...:)

RE: The Beauty/Wellness Category

I am so frustrated with beauty/wellness.. I went from almost 500 to not even in the top 1000. Now I am in the top 1000 at like, 929 and some of my diet reviews are in the top 20-30. Not only that, I don't know if SAP is working because I've asked for several new products weeks ago and I never got any response. Usually I get one in a couple of days max.

10-4-20 is making up for this somehow.. I guess.

But, I am still really frustrated. Will this ever get fixed?

Hmmm maybe if peapod or whatever that service is called was linked to epinions as a shopping portal...it would make a difference. I know that service is not available in all areas but the areas where they are located have huge populations!

Out of curiosity I just peeked at my public profile page to see if my Angel perfume review was still listed as one of my top ten reviews..its gone, completely gone...It's been listed for a few years now.....hmmm, all you gals who write in beauty, now I understand your frustrations ...

I wonder why nobody from epinions has written a message on the board to update any progress..

RE: SAP's... it is finally working again, keeping in mind that a huge backlog was created due to the downtime and all the contest frenzy over the last several months. The process also changed for us so we are still figuring it all out as well. I also have a lot of older SAPs due to the wait time we previously experienced for brands to be added. We don't have to do that any longer but, all the ones that were waiting are also in the mix of the pile up from the downtime. Obviously this means my inbox folder of SAPs is quite large.... my goal is to soon have it empty!

Melissa and I really try to get them out as quickly as we can but both of us also went from being home full time to working full time. So that will obviously have an effect on our previously lightening-fast turnaround time. It's a good thing SAP's are not a required duty for CL's :) We will get them out as soon as we can.

As for the other issues (fluctuating stats, reviews not showing up, etc).... those are questions I don't have an answer for so I hope bug reports are being filed when these problems come up!

Shantel :)

I'm not knocking the advice, but I filed a few at first, then pretty much gave up when I discovered most of my reviews since October are in the same boat and that any reviews in the dead categories are up the creek without a paddle so to speak.

I think it's pretty clear that a significant number of reviews are simply not recording any traffic data even though there are ample demonstrations that there is traffic.

I appreciate the input, Shantel! I wish that you were being kept informed more on what is going on.

The SAP's are the least of our worries at this point. I wondered if the SAP was working for the Beauty category - I had the idea that if it *wasn't*, then we were on our way out. It sounds like it IS working, so apparently we aren't on our way out, LOL.

Thanks again!

lol, no I dont think anything Beauty is on the "way out" :) I think alot of the issues/bugs are stemming from the merge between the 2 categories so hopefully they are aware of and working on it! I still recommend submitting bug reports anytime you (or anyone) sees something that is wacky.

RE: The Beauty/Wellness Category

Although I'd be lying horribly if I said I never choose my review topics with no consideration of how many outside hits I get, I tend to write about whatever it is I write about more or less randomly. The only exception is when I actually buy something new and want to write about it right away or if, for instance, something that I already have coincides with the release of something new, like a new Indiana Jones or Star Trek movie.

That having been said, I am extremely disappointed by my hits counts on reviews that I wrote recently without purposely thinking, Aha! This review is bound to get a zillion hits but nevertheless figured they'd get some traction because they are about popular products. One in particular has that "review" word tacked on to the URL and is getting no outside hits. More worrisome, in the product listing where it says how many Eps reviews have been written the figure is given as 17, yet if I click on Read Reviews, only four writers' Epinions show up. Four. And yes, they all have the /review/ bit embedded in the tagline.

I'm also not getting any outside hits on K&F reviews. True, that's not a category where I have any hat whatsoever, but it is one of my favorite places to write in, and while I'll continue writing reviews there, I'm beginning to think that it's rather a pointless exercise, since all I'm earning there is the one-time-only $10-4-10 bonus.

I know what you mean. I look down my page and 7 out of 8 recent reviews have no outside hits. In the ''Olden Days'' it was rare for any review to go without outside hits for more than a week or so. -Dave

Yup. That's my feeling on my pet reviews, some of my movie reviews, a few of my restaurant reviews... you get the idea.

I only hope that the /review bug will be fixed at some point. I even hope that the "lost" hits and IS will eventually be given to us. (But I think that's a way optimistic hope).

I sort of accept the negligible to nonexistent outside hits in reviews about 10-year-old collectibles that are not in great demand. I write those reviews not really with tons of IS in mind since K&F has never been a reliable source of residuals.

What worries me is that some of the affected reviews are in categories that have normally been consistent in IS inflow, and now - even in a title which I thought would be getting some outside hits - it's almost like the /review/ thing makes them "flatliners."

I have reviews that have gone from 1,000-3,000 hits one month to being a total flatliner the next month. Has the review outlived its usefulness? Of course not! The system is broken. I will no longer write a review on an item if /review/ appears in the URL.

I'm starting to feel the same way. I now know anything I write in that food category will be that way but what's upsetting me is movies which have always had good outside hits for me and now are not...I found I had posted a movie review on DVD and it had the nasty word "review" in the Url, so I moved it to "In theaters" and voila, that nasty word wasn't there...Now I am watching to see if it makes any difference when the new IS is out. it also seems that all the saps I asked for have "review" in the url..

But these reviews will pay that $2.00 and in some categories that is more than it would have earned in years...like travel!!!

So I'm not making that statement... yet...even though I have had thought about it.

Thanks so much Summer..I can't believe it, I left the computer for 3 hours to watch TV and found Andy's announcement when I logged back on...This really does give me an awful sinking feeling, first GG and now Andy, this can't bode well for Epinions and in general for all of us...

Rudi,

I wonder who thought up the /review/ thing for the URLs. I still stand by my Oh, well, that's life statement about my K&F reviews. I've earned some IS but not always consistently.

Movies and Books, though...they aren't registering as many outside hits as they normally do. And I know I've sent e-mails out promoting my reviews to a few friends, and they've been read/looked at....so....

RE: The Beauty/Wellness Category

Movie folks -

If you have a review that has the /review/ tag in it and know that there are others of the same movie that do not, send me an email. There may be a way we can move them. It depends entirely on the title and the hoops seem to be a little different for each one, but I was able to successfully move four reviews away from the /review/ listing and onto the one without the tag and three of the four have begun counting outside hits. Not impressive hits, but more than zero.

Of course this only works if such a listing exists, but I'm happy to help anyone that wants to try.

Sue

I don't think Sports & Outdoors is making it either :(

While rankings seem to be back in the formerly dead categories, it doesn't seem like anything else has been done to them - aka there's no actual counting of hits going on yet. Plus it seems that the advisor rates, even though there is a bubble, are all over (they aren't kept at the top of rates), so maybe because of that, the front page can't find any MH reviews?

Someday it'll all work...

I feel your pain.
The POTATO category is, has been , and always will be nonexistent.
It's a crying shame.

We had a childhood family friend from 'the west' who introduced us to the Idaho Spud.

They are indeed pretty 'scrumptious'.

Note the details page there:

Beverages / Flavored Tea / Tea / Gourmet

...sigh.

I didn't know these were listed. I've had them too. Once ordered a whole case to give away for prizes at the learning center. Unfortunately they didn't get the enthusiastic reaction I'd hoped for.

They're not a health food and not exactly beautiful, probably not a candidate for health and beauty.

thanks for the heads up just the same.

Okay, I don't spoil the party, but this thread got hijacked and Kimm and I really did have some legit questions about the status of things in Beauty.

namely

1. Why no MH Beauty/Wellness reviews on Front Page?
2. No Beauty Top Earners (only Wellness)?
3. What has happened to Fragrance reviews?

Okay, spudboy, sleeper, I leave you with this. If you need a food item to review, try this

I pray someone answers your questions.

Questions unanswered only make the spirit bitter and the heart hard. Speaking for 'spudboy' and myself, I am sure we would both hate to see that happen to dear, dear Peggy. No matter how . . .'challenging' her replies on the board.

These are valid questions.

1. Wasn't aware of this problem. I'll look into it.
2. Yes, I know about this one. I haven't been able to figure it out yet. I was hoping June hits would make a difference. Let's wait and see (MPR et. al. should arrive tomorrow, if not Monday).
3. No idea. New to me, and I'll look into it.

I'll try to respond in the next few (business) days.

Barb, I actually came across this when perusing a British food website looking for things for your W/O. My mom served us a lot of weird stuff growing up as my grandmum was Scottish. But this was a new one to me.

I swear I'm going to order it!

I think this stuff was named after Herman Melville's Captain Ahab. After all this is what he did, his obsession.

Okay, so I don't actually know because I never read it. I just know that there is a long bit about whale slaughtering in the book.

I haven't forgotten about this post. I've been getting myself educated on each of these topics, and now I have some answers.

1) Soft Productized categories are not included in the queries that generate the homepage content. There's a ticket opened to fix this, but it's not prioritized at this time.

2) Is this fixed? The #5 TER is for Cosmetics.

3) I'm guessing that Fragrance reviews were not earning Income Share? Is this also fixed? I looked for recent Fragrance reviews and verified that at least one earned something in June and July. This one was written in Feb 2008:

elaura82's Elegant!

Let me know if I'm missing something. I'm happy to dig a little deeper.

Thanks Damon!

Others will probably have an answer quicker than I, but thanks so much for looking in to this :)

Beauty reviews that had high MH ratings *used* to be shown on the Front Page, and then stopped, that's why I thought to ask :)
