I did the same exact thing. I looked at it as a new toy to play with. I played and played and played until I was perfectly comfortable with it, learning along the way, all of its strengths and weaknesses. And seeing if I could come up with some work-arounds for the weaknesses.
Ed: I feel your pain - there are definite "issues" with the new toy. But if you read through this thread you'll find tons of help about how to use it. Or, feel free to email me, and I'll be happy to help you out.

I've been doing the same but, I'm far from perfectly comfortable. I do a lot of previewing and that's where I get in trouble with extra spacing and more when I use the b and i features.
The easiest way to avoid that, for me at least, is to write the full review devoid of html. Once I'm ready to submit, I add the Bold and Italians. One cluck later I'm in.

That's what I've been doing I actually like the fact that I don't have to type in all the htmls in my review when I'm in word and just use that new tool for bolding and Italics. |

RE: Fixes (+ more) coming
All,
We thank you for your feedback and for supporting your community. I really feel a true sense of community on the boards in relation to this issue.
Fixes are coming. We've fixed most of the "HTML" problems related to pasting from MS Word. We've got a fix for the "closing tag" issue. For those yearning for the days of old we've also implemented a new feature. You will have the option to turn off the editor. All of this will come out in the next big release. Spellchecker on by default is not an option today but could be in the future if someone else builds that functionality, i.e. it's open source.
There will be additional bug fixes, not related to the editor, in this release. We'll publish a release announcement with a new feature/bug list.
Thanks,
Yoel

I don't know about any other units of measurements, but Texas (where everything is bigger!) has claimed a dubious "honor":

I can't help wonder why they go and do this to us when there are so many other things needing fixing on the site, why mess with something that worked well and didn't need fixing.

Spacing
Posted today's review nandall the spaces were gone. Updated and it startd showing me the sideways "v"s with a b something in them indicating there were errors. Went back. Deleted the whole thing. Started from the article again, clicked on update..changed the spacing back to normal and reposted and this time no problem. Have no idea what went right and what went wrong but it's all annoying. So much easier before. |

RE: New WYSIWYG Text Editor Help Thread
Quote: susiewho What is the upside of this ne system? I find it really horrible. Well, as has been explained elsewhere - I think post number 127 of 270 or so ( ...chuckle... ) the membership have been begging for a WYSIWYG editor for years (I'll leave it to someone else to dredge up a list of threads where it's been requested). So since they had a qualified intern for the summer, they assigned him this relatively simple task. If the site were sudoku, this task would be a one-star and the things you allude to (search; catalog) would be five stars. So they put the guy to work on it. He did it; it had a few bugs - most of which are embedded in the OpenSource engine that was used so that EPs wouldn't have to pay for off-the-shelf software - and the staff have been swatting bugs at an impressive rate.
The product works. Hundreds upon hundreds of people have posted reviews without having screaming fits. Dozens of well-intentioned members have posted hints, drawn diagrams, created cookbook documents complete with screen shots, warned of known bugs, offered help to others who are still having difficulty. I find that pretty impressive, too.
So: just what problem do you have, and how can the people assembled here help you ger past it?

As do I! Even knowing the bugs in this system and how to work around them, it still takes me forever and a day to go back and edit an old review. Why? Because I've been posting reviews for years and years that had several lines of italicized text with line breaks between them. Gee, if I'd have known EIGHT YEARS AGO that this was gonna become a problem, I'd have settled on a different format.
Quote: scmrak Practice - and practice on junk in which you have no investment time-wise. Y'all are tearing your hair out because you're so worried that your review won't look perfect - if you don't care whether the output looks perfect, then you'll feel a heckuva lot freer to experiment.
This is a rather poor excuse for us to just accept the way the system is now. Look, I don't mean to be anal retentive about the formatting of my reviews. I can be flexible. That doesn't change the fact that I have tons of old reviews in the system that are now a major pain in the bum to update, because I either have to coax the HTML into submission, or rip out all of the formatting and start over. Either way, that takes a hell of a lot more time than I want to have to spend just to update an old review and link it to a newer one. That used to take about 10 seconds - now it takes a good 10 minutes.
In any event, posting a review and finding out that is displays in a messed-up format would be an improvement at this point. Right now it takes a herculean amount of effort just to be able to post the damn thing at all.
Here's a helpful suggestion - "You have an opening <i> without a closing </i>." That's nice. Why don't you tell me where I've committed this grave offense, and then it might actually be an easy thing to fix?
You should never tell somebody they have a bug in their code without telling them where it is. Rule of Programming Number... uh... something with only 1 digit.

That's an excellent suggestion, one I completely agree with. Since the debugger "knows" there's a mis-matched code, it can certainly tell us where it is.
