Thanks for the offer. It's appreciated.

However, I don't think we'll be staging this release. It'll go straight out for everyone to use.

That's great news! Care to tell us when this might get released? October? November?

I checked the editor bug as divad23 described above. If I understand it correctly, if you write a review, bold some text, and then insert an HTML line break (
) within that text, the editor will report the "open without close" and "close without open" message.
It's been my experience that if you change the <br /> to a simple <br> it stops complaining about an error...

Ummm, errr, only if one already knows - or is willing to learn - how to code one's own HTML. Seems that a fair number of people are unable and/or unwilling to do so, which is why so many other "enter-it-yourself" sites are HTML-free zones.

If, of course, one doesn't want to bold or italicize anything, then there's not much difference - type in plain text in either editor, and one gets plain text. It's not until one starts using the "new" functionality that everything goes wonky.

Wonky, huh? That's relief. I guess. I thought I was just being inept.

I just tried to post my first review since the new editor came out. I had exactly three bolded/italicized pieces in it, and after half an hour of trying to get the thing posted, I gave up and removed all the HTML. I checked in the window that lets you see your code and NOTHING was open-ended or unopened. The system just plain LIES.

I tried reverting to my own coding, as I've always done, but the codes showed up in the review, while their effects didn't.

So after removing all code, I posted the review, but it looks pretty boring. I have specific things that I bold and italicize and now I can't do that any more.

I'm not enough of a techno person to be able to research the problem or figure out a work-around. I did, however, copy my review into Word, which I hate and don't use for composing, and tried to post it from there. No go.

So in the 17 pages of discussion on this thread, I haven't found anything that tells me how to get my bolds and italics into my posts...

RE: New WYSIWYG Text Editor Help Thread

Hi Margaret,

Far as I know, bolding/italicizing within the new editor window works. You have to highlight the portion you wanted bolded/italicized then hit the B or the I button. However, if you're trying to highlight an entire line (for instance, a header line), then it's a bit tricky. Because the highlight function "wants" to grab the extra end-of-line marker at the end of the line (it shows up as a space after your final character).

If that's what you're trying to do, Rex's solution is a simple one. See his write-up here

If you want further instruction, or still have questions, feel free to email me.

Mona

Thanks, Mona. That's exactly what I did, four times. I highlighted two words and hit the B or I buttons. When I tried to go to the next page, it kept telling me I had open and unclosed code, or closed code that hadn't been opened. Neither was true.

I'll check Rex's post tomorrow morning - thanks for the link.

RE: New WYSIWYG Text Editor Help Thread

One more thought - are you trying to bold/italicize the title of the review?? Because that's no longer allowed. But within the body of the review, it should work.

Here's how I bolded the heading of new paragraphs:

I'll just add this, in case it's helpful for anyone else.

With my recent review, I wanted to highlight the heading for some of the paragraphs, but the text editor wouldn't let me bold the whole line.

So, I just added a couple tildes before and after my text, and then just bolded the text part (not the tildes) and that worked fine.

Like this:

~~~Only this part gets bolded, not the squiggles~~~
Well, I imagine it would work just as well with a dash or dot. Though I'm a great fan of tildes personally, in moderation.
Make certain you take the tildes out. You're one over the maximum of five allowed for a somewhat helpful review...
Moderation, yes: they belong over letters, but just say Ñõ! to naked tildes (except in UNIX addresses or when used to indicate approximation)...
Can we put a link in like the old way by adding the Url of the other review and use the blah ...
edited to say it worked here but would it on the review page
(
No.
You can't do it the old way.
You can't do it like you do it here.
You don't need to type any <s or >s or a hrefs at all.
Do it this way:
1) Type or paste your review. Don't worry a single bit about trying to create a link while you're typing or pasting. It is a separate process.
2) highlight the word(s) you want to be the link text (the link text is the text that you click on, like this word)
3) click on the little chain icon
4) you will get a new little popup. If you don't get a new little popup, it's being blocked by your browser or other software. If you do get the popup:
5) paste the URL of the page you want to link to. In the following line of text, the bolded material is the URL:
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/">text</a>
Paste ONLY the "address-y" part into the box. Do NOT paste the "HTML-y" or the "text-y" part into the box.
Once again, only different: In the following example, you should paste the bold segment into the box and not paste the italicized segment:
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/">text</a>
6) click "insert"
You now have a link.
To recap: you do not type the the brackets (< >), or the html tags (a, /a) in the box or the body of the review. All of that is done for you by the editor interface.
Actually you can. In the html editor window. Just put your "[a href..." stuff right in that box. It's great for when you already have your links formatted (especially if it's a bunch of them) and just want to paste them in.
Don't confuse the issue, Mona... If you want to write the entire review in the HTML window, you can¹. But we're not talking about that.
No - I wasn't implying writing the entire review in the html window - merely adding the links that way.
That's how I did some of my recent reviews - wrote them in Word, plopped them into the Word window, THEN pasted the links into the html window.
Why can't people employ a mixture of techniques, if it works for them?
Which is what the thing that generates the HTML should have been doing for us in the first place. <br /> is valid HTML in the strict sense but all browsers understand and accept <br>, and that's what even the most novice of HTML programmers are usually taught on pretty much day 1. Since the validator is unique to Epinions and not a strict XHTML validator, it shouldn't have to care whether the <br> tag is self-closing or not... and indeed, it doesn't.
So, if we can get it to generate a <br> instead of a <br /> for every carriage return I type, then case closed - the validator will be cool with it and all will be well.
