Hmmm. On my first attempt I did all that (except, apparently, the 'accept character substitution' thing)

But unlike you, I found changes that I wanted to make at the publish or edit page. When I went back is when I had trouble. It was at that point that I started having the problems with extra spaces being added each time as I went back to change something.

I finally got it published as I wanted it by making sure everything was exactly as I wanted it . . .and I did not go back to edit.

Which sure reins in my freedom to edit as, Marie and Barbara have already suggested.

I have one more to publish this month. I guess I will have a chance to try it at least one more time soon.

I have one more to publish this month also, I hope to keep it simple and won't do much in the way of links or anything fancy....but for tonight, bon nuit to all and bon chance...good night and good luck.

To continue...I believe it's the going back to edit that is causing us to find the html problems. On my last review I removed all the (br) and substituted one (p) wherever I needed a paragraph.

Like you, Tom I could not go back to edit again for I knew I would automatically get more than just a double space format I wanted.

Were you editing in the main window thing or did you click on the thing to edit html?

When I went back in to edit mine, I just made my changes in the main window thing and didn't mess with the html thing. The things that I had used bold and italics on originally - by using the tags - were showing up correctly in that window.

To add my thoughts, Marie...

Yes, my bolding and italics held fine ...but the spacing was immediately off when I chose to edit.

It was easier to correct the spacing by going into the HTML editor window and delete the extra tags there.

I am sure it will be easier with the next one I try. I think we all are learning something new each time we post a review.

Ok. The spacing didn't get messed up with mine when I went back to fix something before publishing. It also didn't get messed up when I went back into 3 of my posted reviews.

Hmm. Just a thought here. Did you originally type the review up the version of Word that Yoel said is causing issues with the editor? Maybe that conflict is what is causing your spacing trouble.

Tom, I think I had the problem of editing that you mention on the review I first published when this all happened a few days ago. I had to go into the HTML editor and correct.

But yesterday was a first (or maybe I just didn't care) - I didn't spot any errors after publishing or right before publishing that needed correction.

I'm done for the month, but this story will be be continued . . .

RE: What works for me.

I just posted a review (pasted from NOTEPAD!) and had to edit the GDMF'NSOB twice to make it look right. Way to go, Epinions.

Leaving well enough alone

What's wrong with that? Was everyone complaining? Did the site just want to shake things up? I hate change :)

All I can say

Is what's working for me. If I use bold in Word (2007), I wind up with no closed bolding and have to fix it once I paste into Epinions. No such problem with Italics. My solution? I wait and do the bolding in Epinions.

The spacing issue is solved for me by going through the review right before publishing (after all the last minute editing) and backspacing away ALL spacing between paragraphs, then putting it back in. That has worked for me three times now.

When I get the "opening whatever without a closing whatever" error message, I've found that unbolding (or italicizing) and then RE-bolding does the trick. Either I'm very lucky or it doesn't matter which I choose to unbold and rebold. I've grabbed at random and "fixed" and it's taken care of the problem.

My biggest complaint is that the error messages often pop up after an edit of a version that cleared first time through. In other words, formatting that I didn't change suddenly triggered an error when it had previously been just fine.

Ah, well. It'll work itself out, right? I appreciate the sentiment behind the changes, and figure this will probably be a terrific tool for many once its hiccoughs are ironed out.

Kris

I'm done for the month too and had a few issues posting my last review, I took someones advice, can't remember who and use the bold took in my word processer, but when I submitted the review I got that blasted message you know, opening b without a closing be and closing without opening, so I unbolded them on the page by highlighting the bold words and hitting the bold key and they went to regular words...then I used the bold key on the page to make the words bold again using the reverse technigue and it worked...so then I decided to get smart and put my final paragraph into Italics but then I got the same message about opening and closing italics...so I changed it back.

thankfully I was able to add a link without a problem...it took me almost all day to write and submit that review...number 20...I'm done!

Going to watch a movie now for Stevens Murrays black and white write-off...I found 4 great old movies at the library yesterday to watch this week now that the convention I was interested in in over...LOL

Happy weekend and writing everyone

You can't (right now) grab multiple lines for bold/italics. The end-of-line markers "trapped" inside the bolds/italics wreak havoc. If you want to grab multiple lines you really need to grab each one individually and bold/italicize it - and that will only work correctly if you're extremely careful not to accidentally grab the end-of-line marker (the extra space) at the end of each line.

I used italics on a few lines at the end of one of my reviews and it worked fine. I did it in the new editor thing and just highlighted what I wanted to put in italics and clicked the button. I didn't get any errors. It was on the second of the three reviews I've posted since this new editor came out.

RE: What works for me.

Hmmm... that's interesting. Could it be the issue's been fixed? Or, maybe there are multiple versions floating out there. Like I said, I've had no luck when highlighting multiple lines. Weird!

edited to add: I just tried it again. And I can't get it to work. Whenever I highlight multiple lines, the end-of-line markers "trapped" inside the fomat codes yield errors. I can only surmise that differing operating systems are behaving differently.

I posted that review on Thursday evening. I had typed it up in WordPerfect like I always do. I copied and pasted by using the little Word button. I then went through to add in my bold and italics. No errors when I did multiple lines at once for italics.

I am using Firefox 3 and have Windows XP.

RE: What works for me.

One more clarification -

I'm referring to highlighting multiple lines separated by end-of-line markers. As in lines where you hit "enter" to separate them. Think of creating a list of items, where you hit "enter" after each one. THOSE lines can't be grabbed and bolded/italicized.

Lines that simply wrap around to the next based upon the size of the input windw CAN be grabbed and bolded/italicized.

I guess what I keep referring to as 'multiple lines' should be better referred to as 'discrete lines'. As opposed to lines that are the result of word wrapping. (Someone can probably jump in here and give me a better way of phrasing this).
