Kenmore Elite HE4 Dryer Won't Start Intermittently

A Kenmore Elite HE4 dryer model 110.8586 won't start sometimes. The light inside comes on with the door open - so it has power. Usually start by pressing Normal mode and Start button. Normal mode button usually turns on an led so you know it is responding. Sometimes it doesn't - this is the problem. Randomly pushing other setting buttons then Normal mode and start will get it going - if you are persistent. I tried cycling power thinking to reset everything with no luck. Of course, it is now out of warranty - just over a year old. Does anyone know what electronic component is bad? And if the replacement part has been fixed? Should I start looking for cold solder joints? Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Kenmore Elite HE4 Dryer Won't Start Intermittently

Same here! I purchased my HE4 110.8586 in November 2004, worked great (had a few problems with the washer, but that's for another thread, right?).

Anyway, last week the dryer finished its cycle, I removed all the clothes, found I had a few damp items. Placed the damp items back in the dryer, pressed the auto cycle 'casual' setting, then 'start.' That's when I get three short beeps, and....nothing......no error code...nothing....just the panel lights blinking at me, but nothing!!!!!

I read through the entire user's manual: On page 21 of the user's manual it states that "Three short tones sound if an unavailable combination is selected. The last selection will not be accepted."

That is not my case! I just pressed one button ('auto casual setting') and 'start!' Nothing happens. I have pressed cancel, waited for over fifteen minutes (the manual states that if the dryer is "off" for longer than five minutes, the cycle automatically turns off. I have unplugged the dryer, thinking that would be the equivalent of "rebooting the computer," right?

n..o..t..h..i..n..g

My dryer does not run. I called Sears & scheduled a service call. I will let you know what happens, after the repairman's visit.

Same Problem For Us!

We have had the exact same problem. Last week the dryer worked fine, this week the light goes on when we open the door but nothing! None of the controls seem to work?

Did the repair person come look at the dryer yet? What was their response?

Thanks!

Kenmore Elite He5 dryer

I have read all the postings regarding all the problems with the HE3 dryer and the He4 dryer. I purchased a brand new He5 dryer and HE5t washer(just came out in January 07") in the champagne barolo color with two pedestals also, the total came to over $3,000 on sale. It was purchased on Jan. 27th 2007. On Jan 29th they delivered my washer and dryer and installed it. That night after they left, I went to use my dryer after having washed clothes, and the dryer would not turn on, or it would turn on briefly and then shut off abruptly. We had discovered that there was a problem with the door on the dryer. It was bowed and not engaging the lock system making the dryer useless. They then brought out another dryer Feb. 4th with same problem of door. Now they're telling me I need to wait 30 days or more to get another. He5 dryers are no better than older ones!!! This is rediculous @ the price point of these appliances, that they are riddled with so many manufacturer flaws. I hope there will be postings regarding the brand new 07" series HE5 and He5t washer and dryers that are equally, if not more scewed up!

Help with dryer code E1

I never received a manual for my HE4 Gas dryer, can anyone tell me what the code E1 is trying to tell me? It will start drying okay, then mid cycle as clothes are still wet, it mysteriously turn off and flash the E1 code. This happens at random times. I haven't tried anything to remedy the problem yet, maybe vaccuuming out my dryer vent and unplugging it may help??? I hope my computer isn't malfunctioning. Our dryer is only 2.5 years old and I am not ready to purchase/fix it. Thanks in advance for the help...

Kenmore dryer HE5t

Just purchased a new Kenmore HE5t washer and dryer set. Washer worked fine but when put clothes in dryer, it worked for all of three minutes and shut off. The light panel stayed lit but the clothing setting just blinked. When I pushed the start button, a three-chime sound was made but nothing happened. I'm furious!!! My husband slammed the dryer door and it worked! I think SEARS needs to investigate what is going on with these dryers. It sounds like this is an on-going problem. If the dryer stops working, I'll post another email and let you all know. Since it's been within 30 days, I'm thinking of sending them back and cancelling the credit card purchase since the materials purchased are obviously faulty.

Kenmore Elite HE5 Dryer

Just did a quick search on google to see if anyone is experiencing the same problem with the brand new models - Kenmore Elite HE5 Dryer and Kenmore Elite HE5T Washer -

Just purchased a brand new Kenmore Elite HE5T Washer and the matching HE5 Dryer in the Champagne Color. Beautiful looking machines!! I havn't even tried them out yet and already I have an issue.

I noticed the door hinges are not the same on both the units. Washer has a sturdy chrome door hinge, dryer has a pot metal rickety hinge. The problem I'm experiencing with my Dryer is that the hinge on the dryer door does not have a stop to prevent it from opening all the way and hitting the chrome (plastic?) exterior rim, it is rickety and it makes a clicking noise when opening and closing it - the bottom line is that the dryer door can swing open all the way and crack the PLASTIC door cover.

I called Sears and rather then send someone out to repair it they delivered a brand new one right away - the new one has the same exact problem. I called the local sears store and asked them to check the floor model on the HE5 Dryer and they say it's designed that way. How could this be? Is this some sort of design flaw? There is no way that this dryer door will hold up to any use without cracking the face plate.

I arranged for a technician to come out and look at this issue - I really think I'm going to have to go through the hassel of simply returning them - and it's a crying shame because they are so pretty to look at.

I have not even used these yet - I'm going to my local sears store right now to see for myself if the HE5 Dryer floor model has the same hinge as mine.
If this is the way the dryer is designed then I don't want it - it will only be a matter of time before the door breaks.

RE: Kenmore Elite He5 dryer

I just purchased the same set as you - same color and everything! They are beautys.
Had them delivered on Feb 10th.
I havn't even used them yet.
I'm having a problem with the dryer door hinge - the door opens up to far and could crack the plastic - they delivered another brand new HE5 Dryer - and still the same problem.

As far as using it - I guess I better get it up and running to see if it's working right mechanically.

Did you notice a defective hinge on the dryer door?

My HE4 Dryer (purchased in July, 06) exhibited the same problem ... dryer light comes on, but none of the controls work. I called Sears and they came out two days later. He used a meter and determined that my "electronics are fried" (his words). He said it could be due to a bad solder, or it could have been a power surge (which I do have from time to time here.) Regardless, he said he couldn't determine whether it was the actual control part, or another related board. So, he ordered both (which have now arrived) and he'll be putting them in next Monday. Fortunately, I have the Master Protection plan, so I'm covered on this one.

Needed a new thermistor

Found our problem thanks to all these posts on this site! Thank you all for contributing your stories, so we could narrow down our list of possible problems. Our dryer now doesn't shut off sporadically! It will actually run until the clothes are dry! Amazing! However, when my husband replaced the thermistor there was so much lint and coins under the dryer (it seems that the parts aren't screwed together very tightly...go figure) so I wonder if having oodles of lint constantly flowing into the machine (in parts that are supposed to be free of lint) would cause any of these parts to malfunction? Just thinking out loud here...Uggghhhh, Sears, never again.

HE5 and Sears No Help

Just got the HE5 delivered today - washer and dyer - also champagne (must be the hot color). This was delivered a week after it was promised by the way.

Well 5 hours after delivery - the Dryer is not working. Light inside is on, but the power to the electronics on the front panel is non-existent.

Called support and I have the master plan - no one can come to look at it until next Wednesday. Uh...WTH did I pay for the master plan - so I get service in a week???

So now I have a washer full of wet clothes, and a dryer full of wet clothes and no promise that I'll have a working dryer by next week.

Brilliant. So much for Sears. We're taking them back.

fixed it

I also purchased a Kenmore Elite HE5 and it would not start one day after delivery. I figure out that the mechanism that registered that the dryer door was closed was not engaging.

If you open the dryer door and look in the top of the opening, you'll see the mchanism that gets pushed in when the door is closed. If I ever have the problem, it means the door is not pushed in all the way. I push on the top of the door which pops in, and then the door is engaging the mechanism.

Good tip. I've had this situation with older dryers (and a top loading washer btw). Pity though that new units are being delivered that already suffer this problem.

Sears HE5t Dryer

Just got mine today. Door won't close. It almost seems like the alignment is off like a car door after an accident. Of course Sears is sending a techie out because it is the easiest thing for them to do. I guess I will be requesting a new one but even that doesn't sound like it will be any different. Looks like they have a lemon on their hands.

Kenmore Elite he5 start problem

I found this thread looking for people with a similar problem. I was getting the error beep as if I had an unacceptable combination of selections and it wouldn't start.

The post above about the door latch engage helped me. I fiddled with the latch, closed the door and gave it a hard bump to the top of the door with my hip and it started to run.

Granted ... .this isn't acceptable and I will be calling service. But I did get the dryer to run for now.

I think this particular problem with the blinking lights and error beep is a door latch problem. The little two pin metal piece on the body of the dryer looks flimsy and misaligned and I don't think it fits in the component on the door quite right. Someone above mentioned a misalignment and that's what I see too.

Good luck!

Tired of buying cheap junk

I purchased a Kenmore HE4 washer and dryer 3 months ago and two weeks ago, the dryer suddenly stopped working. Sounds like the same problem everyone else is having. The drum light is on but the display panel is completely dead. A Sears repairman came in and said he has seen many others like it and would have to order the replacement part. It's very frustrating to spend the extra money, thinking you are getting a better quality product. If only companies would stand by their products these days. I have had the worst experience dealing with Sears from the day the washer and dryer were delivered......being without a dryer for two weeks now is just icing on the cake (particularly since I am leaving on a trip tomorrow morning and have 3 loads of laundry that need to get done...and somehow dried). I'd better get back to pushing buttons and slamming the door in the hopes that it will come to life, even for just one cycle.......

RE: Tired of buying cheap junk

I too am tired of spending good money on cheap junk. My HE4 Kenmore Elite dryer is barely over a year old so the warranty is no good and I'm having the problems with the control panel not working....I have to hold my breathe, push buttons, hope and pray that it will come to life. It's not the door ---- it's the control panel. I spent almost a thousand dollars on this dryer and only bought it because the other sears dryer I bought 5 years ago was fried and it was going to cost a fortune to fix it......I have a problem with spending hundreds of dollars on master agreement plans.....I thought dryers were supposed to last forever and I've had to buy two in 5 years....I could kick myself for giving away my old dryer that I'd had forever....I WILL NEVER BUY FROM SEARS again....EVER! How can so many people have problems with this dryer and Sears not stand behind it. Add to that, I can't get anyone to come look at it for more than a week. I hate being ripped off, especially on an appliance that cost almost $1000 .

RE: Tired of buying cheap junk

I have a 14 month old Kenmore Elite HE4 dryer. Out of the blue, the control panel did not light up. With frantic pushing of the buttons in random combinations, I can get it started again....but this is getting old. Did you ever find out what was wrong and how much did it cost you???

So far fixed

After my He5 dryer would not start and gave beeps I too found that it was the door not activating the switch.

The first thing I happening to figure out by accident was I put pressure on the top of the door after it was closed and it then snapped in place, but after a few minutes or seconds it would pop back out and the dryer would stop. I think this can be with the hinge being loose on the top of the hinge and tight on the bottom of the hinge.

I found several screws that were not tight on the door as well as on the hinge. After tightening the ones on the hinge the dryer is working fine. My guess is to check the hinge screws every once in a while. We have our He5 washer and dryer stacked so the vibrating/shaking is more of an issue than if they were side by side. Not sure if this makes a difference, but I wanted to state all the facts about how I have my washer and dryer setup.

With this being said, I still believe that none of use should have to do these things and if continues to come loose I am going to call sears to take them back and I will buy another brand and not at Sears!

I am having the same problem with our He4 dryer (110.85862401). Did you ever get this issue resolved?
