Scariest movie ever?

What does everyone think their favorite scary movie is? It irks me how I've heard for so long that The Exorcist was the scariest movie ever made, and when I finally watched it last year I was very disappointed. I wasn't scared by the movie...but maybe it just depends on what generation you're viewing it. My favorite horror flick has always been Poltergeist. A clown doll coming to life just creeps me out.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

The Exorcist was very scary when it first came out, but it doesn't hold up as well now after we've been bombarded by FX for years.

I agree that Poltergeist was the bomb. That angelic little chickie going 'they're baaaack' will always be in my 'scariest scene' list.

Alien had some serious jumps when it came out too.

I'm afraid the scariest thing I've seen lately though is the election returns..

RE: Scariest movie ever?

I still haven't seen all of the Exercist. What I did catch on tv did creep me out a bit.
Poltergeist is a good one.

Hmm...Well..I did watch Blair Witch Project at night by myself, so that freaked me out a lot. Hmm..can't remember what else right now.

RE: BWP

I remember being skeptical of The Blair Witch Project, since I never thought witches could really be a scary force (with the brooms, black caps and all). But after going to theaters and watching it, I was definitely spooked after that.

RE: BWP

I was skeptial about it being that scarey too..changed my mind after I rented it. The fact that I watched it alone at night probably added to that..and I live in the country...are woods very close. So that didn't help either.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

It's sort of stupid, but I think the movie that scared me most in the actual theater was Pet Sematary. I'd read the book, even, and the thing still scared me. But it definitely isn't the kind of thing that lingers after you step out of the theater.

Well, that's an embarrassing admission.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

I still say the original Japanese "Ring". The first time I watched it I spent a whole week freaked out by it. It sharpened and alerted my senses and brought back my childhood fear of the dark.

Though having said that it's not my favourite horror film- that would be "The Omen" or "Dark Water".

I'd have to go with Poltergeist 2, among others. That creepy preacher has always given me chills.

Pet Semetary I also thought was creepy (murderous children are always fearful). But, I always liked the sequel more than the first. I think maybe the first was scarier, but I think the second just worked out as a better movie on the whole.

Scariest movie ever....

....Blair Witch Project. I went into the movie having fallen pray to the hype, and thinking the movie was based on fact. And then was swept up in it, and scared to the core at the end.....lol.... Yes, years later I realize how bad that looks, but it was the scariest movie to me "at the time."

I managed to find myself at the website for the movie a few days before I actually watched it. That freaked me out too.

Scariest movies...

The ones that stuck with me over the years are The Exorcist, That film just freaks me out! Then there is The Evil Dead. That possessed chick that was locked up in the basement was freaky! Another one that comes to mind is Phantasm, (The Tall Man) BOY...!!!

At any rate, there’s the ones that scared me. They were all when I was a kid too. As an adult, not many have scared me. 13th ghost had some spooky characters. I am looking forward to seeing SAW.

Boring!

Man I gotta say, and don't think i'm trying to insult anyone here but, you guys have an incredibly wussy idea of a scary horror flick. Now I will be honest some people may think mine is stupid but the ONLY and i'm serious when I say only horror movie that has ever frightened me is "The Shining". And really the only parts that scared me were the part where danny is brushing his teeth and the bloody elevators open, and it flashes to those creepy girls, and then the part where you actually see the 2 girls. Lady in the bathtub was creepy but nothin too serious. Key word of all that was "scared". No longer do these or any other scenes in horror movies frighten me. Nothing can send me to that state of psychological confusion when I first saw The Shining. And although I have ranted I now ask everyone on this forum to PLEASE, PLEASE help me find a movie that is actually scary or psychologically disturbing. Not that I have done anything for you people but you all seem to have actually been scared by some movies, I would also like to enjoy this sensation again. And please don't suggest The Grudge or Juon, or any of these supposedly "scary" foreign movies. I was thoroughly disappointed by every single one of them.

Scary monsters

Halloween is a scary flick, but certainly not THE scariest, unless of course, you're fifteen years old, and you're spending Halloween night at your best friend's house, and you're seeing not only your first rated R movie, but your first horror flick 'cuz you've led a sheltered life, and your horrible best bud decides that it's better to watch said film in a completely darkened room, and he figures out that it's funny to tap yours truly on the shoulder at key moments to make me jump, and then during that really scary part where Jamie is sitting on the couch in front of the open window and the curtain slowly blows and you just KNOW that Michael is behind the sofa ready to slash, and at just the moment Jamie realizes it along with you, at JUST THAT MOMENT, a group of your supposed friends from school shows up to toilet paper your best friends house, and so at JUST THAT MOMENT you hear noises outside, and see shadows on the curtains and Jamie screams and you scream and...NOOOOOO!!!!

I suppose that might make Halloween a scary movie - you know, if something like that were to happen...to someone

Have you ever seen Event Horizon? That's one pretty good psychological horror flick I can recall. There's one really good scene with the meeting of the wife, which I kind of forget since I haven't seen the movie in a long time. But if you haven't checked that one out yet, try it on for size.

I think Event Horizon is the only flick to ever give my daughter nightmares, and she was like 16 at the time we saw that one....

Scary movie...

Honestly a film hasn't really freaked me out lately. When I was a little kid This House Possessed: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083192/combined really freaked me out. I don't really remember it all that well (the date would put me at eight years old) but I remember it got to me pretty well at the time. Anyone else catch that one?

Lately though, I'm not really sure if I've been scared. I remember being terribly uneasy at The Others, I kinda dug Below for that respect, was disquieted by In the Mouth of Madness but hmmmm... Maybe Candyman kinda freaked me some.

the Exorcist

I read the Exorcist when I was very young. The book still is scarier t than the movie but the Exorcist has withstood the last 25 years as still the most frightning movie from beginning to end.

My mom told me she's still freaked out by "Creature from the black lagoon" A man in a rubber suit, real scary :) It's all about the time you originally saw it. Plus people who think Exorcist is scary probably saw it w/out knowing about the story. Now with all the joke movies and such, it can't be scary b/c we've laughed at it for years.

I think real-life dramas are the scariest b/c I fear they could actually happen - Like "Day After Tomorrow"

RE: Scariest movie ever?

:) When I was a kid I did get kinda freaked at Friday the 13th and honestly I can see why after watching it again. Kinda cheesey but interesting camera work.

The show that really freaked me out was this old radio show though... My imagination is a bit better if I'm not really able to see the stuff.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

My answers are gonna be out in left field compared to you guys...

I think the all-time scariest movie is Psycho. For recent scary/horror films, I'd go with The Sixth Sense only because it was so intelligent compared to things like the Freddie and Halloween films. I recently saw and enjoyed Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days, but neither are in the same league as Psycho.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

:) Left field? Geeze, I think mine was left field too (a TV movie made back in the early eighties and possibly not released to video?):P

Psycho is a pretty decent scary movie. Interesting twisty plot that is fairly surprising if you haven't been told about the twists beforehand.

The Sixth Sense impressed me quite a bit really. We actually put it on at the college theater that I ran and it was a whole lot of fun just sitting there and watching people jump at a couple of the scenes (everyone jumped in a few places regularly).

:P I should point out that I was maybe eight or ten when I saw Friday the 13th and hadn't seen a whole lot of horror films at that point. I even saw it on regular TV. That was around the time that V came out and maybe that might work as a horror film. I thought that one was a lot of fun anyhow and it had its moments.

scariest movie

I'll never forget how riveted the movie audience was to the fate of the heroine in texas chainsaw massacre. When she finally got away everyone was exhausted as they left the theater. More recently, I was truly scared with 6th sense. One guy noticably walked out in one scary part and was trembling as he practically ran down the isle to get away from the experience. A recent creepy indie is killers in the woods.

Scariest Movie

I have the same feeling about the Exortcist. I saw it as a kid and it scared me silly. I took my wife to see the re-release in the theatres and I was embarrased. All I could think about was Gilda Radner doing her exorcist impression. My wife was NOT impressed.

Scary is different today. I think Japanese style scary is pretty good. Liked 'The Ring" and "The Grudge". I also think making zombies move fast was a good move to make things scarier. In the new Dawn Of The Dead, the zombies can move really fast and they are fairly strong. This changed all the rules for ridding yourself of multiples of zombies. Although I feel there is a place in my heart for older scary movies I enjoy the new film effects to intensify my scary experience.

I found House Of 1000 Corpses to be thrilling; on the edge of scary. The girl, Baby, Rob Zombie's wife is creepy enough of her own. I can't stop watching it, and now with the sequel in theatres soon, it should be good. I feel sad that no one else listed this. :(

RE: Scariest Movie?

White Noise is the freakiest movie I've seen of late. Every time I see some static on my VHS tapes, I turn it off immediately. I don't need to be hearing any msgs from the dead! But I think what makes it scary is that people have actually done this and claim to have heard/seen people. The DVD has a little piece about these people who really believe in this.

RE: Scariest Movie?

I was about to rent White Noise last week along with Hide and Seek, but then I spotted Boogeyman on the rack and opted to get that instead (so to save money). From the trailer of White Noise, the movie doesn't appear to be scary. But, I'm still going to wait for it to hit the movie stations. I'm just thinking it won't really be worth it to give it the rental go.

But, just ghosts in general...I'm really fascinated with the phenomena. I've never seen a ghost myself, although, I've been to haunted places. I find the stories really interesting. Has anyone ever seen a ghost or know of any stories to tell? I've got one I can think of...but, I'm not such a great story teller. I also forget some of how it goes (since it's a story my friend spoke to me about a long time ago).

This took place back in the late 19th century, where a rich family lived in a house. The caretaker that worked there was like a peasant type. Not rich, but fortunate enough to have a job. He had a daughter who fell in love with the rich family's son. When the rich family knew they were together, being the snobby people that they are, they locked her away in the attic. The son didn't know of this and neither did the caretaker. When he asked the family, they lied and told them they didn't know or that she ran away or some other nonsense. The caretaker ended up working for the family still whatever it was, not knowing what to do...or something like that. Anyway, the girl was chained up in the attic (I think). The family never fed her or anything, and she was in there a week, had lost her voice, until finally one day she tried calling out to the father. She ended up falling from the window upstairs and got impaled on the pointy gate below where her father was standing. Seeing this, he came to the house with an axe and chopped up everybody inside. The mother, the father, the son, and even the grandmother.

Today, that is a very warped house. The structure of the house I'm told is very strange. Like, there's a door somewhere that opens up revealing another section of wall behind it (which there's supposed to be some kind of special room back there). Inside the house it's supposed to be really hot in one part I think, and then if you go into the attic it gets really cold. In a way that you'll need a jacket. It might be the opposite though, from cold to hot -- I forget. There's a lot of other strange stuff that goes on in this house. My friend knows about it because his brother is friends with this Realtor, and my friend and his brother have both been inside the house. They've even had run-ins with some of the ghosts.

Scary, Scary stuff..

One of the most suspenseful, scary movies I saw as I was growing up and surprisingly held up very well when I watched it not long ago (though it is an older movie)
is

The Window a 1949 film in which a young boy who likes to tell tall tales witnesses a murder by some of his neighbors and the neighbors see him. No one will believe what he saw... and the neighbors are trying to get to him to keep him quiet...!!! It starred Bobby Driscoll who actually won a special accademy award for his performance.

I think the original Alien had some great scares in it. When you first see it and the alien bursts out of the stomach.. that is a Jump you don't forget.

When I was growing up a lot of things were wonderfully freaky--but they would not do a thing for grown-ups watching them today.

For instance the scene where the boy watching from his window sees his parents SUCKED into the Ground gave many many kids nightmares (INVADERS FROM MARS). Or the image of that guy who rushed to mirror, unbuttoned his shirt and saw coming out of his collar bone.. an EYE !!!! EEEK.. It was from The Manster. The corpse at the top of the stairs in the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was a great shock (back then). And it's still pretty creepy when the daughter comes back to life and attacks her parents with a garden spade!!!!

A lot of very well done low budget movies like Halloween or Hills Have Eyes have been copied and ripped off so many many times that for many it is nearly impossible to comprehend how they scared anyone. But they did.

More recently, Sixth Sense, Both verstions of the first Ringu (Japanese and American--Ringu) the ghost story with Nicole Kiddman--The Others, The Audition, were effective, engrossing and very well done. Romero's newest Land of the Dead has some good moments by the way.
I thought.

RE: You may not believe it but I do!

I WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON UR STORY.
THE LITTLE GIRL THAT PLAYED IN THAT MOVIE , WAS LINDA BLAIR , AND SHE DID NOT DIE AS A MATTER OF FACT SHE IS NOW THE HOST OF (THE SCARIEST PLACES ON EARTH).
LINDA BLAIR ALSO PLAYED IN THE SECOND MOVIE.
SHE IS ALIVE AND WELL AS OF TODAY.
JUST THOUGHT I WOULD LET YOU KNOW.

scary movies

Various movies have scared me different degrees at different times. The Exorcist scared the crap out of me when I first saw it, as did Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Alien. I thought Ju-on: The Grudge was really scary but that the remake kind of blew. The Tall Man from the Phantasm series is incredibly creepy and those movies have some moments that I think are genuinely chilling. Cannibal Holocaust and Last House on The Left are possibly the two most disturbing movies I've ever seen, for their different reasons, but while I could say Cannibal Holocaust might be all right for the curious, I would never recommend Last House to anyone.

Oh yeah, and Nightmare on Elm Street has always really creeped me out. Just the idea of some demon invading your dreams is totally freaky. Heh, I made myself watch the first one when I was living by myself one summer just to get over being freaked out by a movie I had never even seen! I'm glad I did because I'm in love with the series now. That was probably the only time I've been so scared by the idea of a movie that I had to force myself to watch it.

The Ring

I can definitely tell you what horror movie series isn't scary in the slightest bit...The Ring. I've seen The Ring that released in 2002 maybe ten or more times already without flinching once. Or ever feeling creeped out by the movie. The Ring is another one of those movies where I hear how some people think it's the scariest thing you'll ever see, and then I end up wondering why. I can watch that movie from beginning to end and go through it like I were watching a harmless comedy. Only, there's nothing to laugh at but the idea that anyone would ever be unnerved while experiencing the film.

I went and rented The Ring Two this week, since there was nothing else on the rental list I was interested in (or could think of that I might want to watch). Yet again, I'm stunned at how tame the movie turned out to be. I remember the commercials for The Ring Two claiming the second one to be even scarier than the first. The first wasn't scary at all, so I couldn't imagine The Ring Two being too much more frightening, if even at an insignificant spec. Predictably, the movie did nothing to me at all. In fact, the second one was probably less eerie than the first, if you were to weigh them on an official horror scale to balance the measurement of terror embedded within the two movies.

I gotta say...

that John Carpenter's in the Mouth of Madness freaks me out every single time I see it. I've seen a LOT of horror movies (it's my main genre) and that one, well, is freaky!

suspiria

Dario Argento's 1977 film "Suspiria" makes "The Exorcist" look like a love story and "The Shining" look like a sunday school field trip to the ice cream parlor."Suspiria" is the scariest film ever.

RE: suspiria

I did see Event Horizon once..I refuse to watch it again. Most of it was just a bit bizare, but a few scenes were really freaky.

I haven't seen all of The Shining, but I did read the book. Loved that so will see the movie sometime.

I really like Sixth Sense and The Others. Stir of Echos is very good too. Not really horror in my opinion, but very suspenseful.

Scary flicks

Suspiria has, and will remain on my list (as well as a few other Argento films), but not as THE scariest. The Little Girl Down the Lane is on there also. Hell, I'd even have The Haunting (1963) up there but none of them freaked me out on an emotional and psychological level as much as a little film out of Austria called Funny Games did.

RE Scariest Movie Ever

I have always been a huge fan of the horror genre, the funny thing is that I have never seen a film that has truly frightened or disturbed me (at least not since puberty!). I keep searching. I am going to try some of the suggestions here for my Halloween Sunday night.

I did want to mention a film I saw in the late 80's early 90's called 'Paperhouse', I think it may have been a foreign film. There were some scary and disturbing scenes in that movie and a good storyline.

This Will Make You Laugh

Ok, so I was easily frightened as a kid. Horror movies still get me, even half watching them on TV with commercials.

But as a kid, the one thing that freaked me out the most was Marley'd ghost showing up in the George C. Scott version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. That would make me stay awake at night for months afterward. And we're talking early high school here.

No, I'm probably better off staying away from the horror genre.

Creepy....

Remember though, its very easy not to find films scary if u dont have the atmosphere right. When the lights are off and the TV is flickering away and the window is open, i always find a guaranteed shiver down my spine.

I love horror films. I love the rush that you get after when you're lying in bed and jumpin at every noise. The first proper film i saw was It by stephen king and, holy crap, i couldnt sleep in my own room...next week, trying to look hard, i watched candy man and that was really scary as we watched it in my friends MASSIVE draughty old house where you can imagine things happening. BLair Witch, i watched whilst working up in Scotland, near the craigvinean forest and then played hide and seek in the wood, the Amytiville Horror, really scary as the curtain was blowing in the wind and i thought i could hear whispers...

you can't expect the films to do it all alone. you have to build up some of the atmosphere.

Scary Movie!!

The scariest movie ever, for real is Celery stick warrior. This was the scariest movie I have ever seen. From the scene with the Polar bear eating the guy alive and the scene with the rhinosaurus driving around a john deere tractor in a feild with a star lit sky and a half moon. this was the scariest movie ever in the world. And the scene when the guy is hiding under the corn stocks looking out with a flame thrower. You have to see this movie everyone, it makes Exercist look like nothing.

RE: Boring!

If you want a really frightening movie-watch the Grudge, preferrably the original Japanese version:Ju-on.
I, too, was bored a long time after seeing The Others(good movie, but not an extreme fright)Final Destination(not scary, just sick)and Cube(very good, but not scary, just bloody)The Ring(not very scary). Then I watched The Shining and thought I had reached the outer borders of scariness. I was so wrong. When The Grudge came,I immediately watched it on tv( oops, late in the evening)
and then I knew. The Grudge is the border. The story, but especially the flickering short images on screen you see, of horrible beings, sick mutilations and impossible events.. It really is the most frightening movie ever. When I watched the Exorcist, I laughed my *** off. Is this the so horrifying movie that everyone speaks of?? LOL.

Watch the Grudge. You'll like the part in which the sister of the guy who used to live in the house gets a visit from the demonic entity. Bell rings..she's on 16th floor, he's down at ground level. She pushes the door opening button..two seconds later, her front door bell rings. She don't trust it,looks through the eyehole, oh its him, phew, opens the door- NO ONE. now thats real fright.

hmm, what hav i found scary?

Well...I know it kinda sounds stupid but the ring is the most scary film i hav ever seen (and i havnt even seen the japanese version yet) I found the story completely stupid, especially the second film, but those off pitch sounds they used and the black and white images really got to me...Creepy!!! I bought the shining last week but havn't had time to watch it yet so hopefully it be as good as people say.
Somebody mentioned House of 1000 corpses...This is my favourite film ever! Not scary at all but totally wierd and just amazing and of course the sequel The Devils Rejects was awesome. Defiantly watch it if you don't mind sadistic killin and stuff, fantastic!!!
Other than that i can't think of anything that has really stuck in my mind, but if anyone knows something that will scare me stupid then please please let me know.

Effectively creepy flicks

As an adult, I no longer get "scared"..however, I can still get disturbed, creeped out and have a goosebump or two when watching a horror flick. Be they supernatural or not, here are some of my picks..

Frailty: Bill Paxton plays a dad who believes God is talking to him and ordering him to destroy demons hiding in human form..his sons are along for the nightmare.

Near Dark: Another Bill Paxton flick...half the cast of Alien is in this one. Very cool modern day retelling of the vampire myth!

Event Horizon: Soemone else mentioned this...though slightly flawed, this is a pretty damned decent scary flick for being set in outer space!

Dawn of the Dead: (Remake) Sue me, I aint a purest and to many I utter heresy when I say I do not like the cheesy original..this is much superior in every way shape and form.

Session 9: An abandoned mental asylum and a crew of renovator workmen become obsessed with the haunted past of this building and its goings on.

The Exorcist: Funny, but this is one I still wont watch late at night before going to bed.

House of 1000 Corpses: A veritable house of horrors fun ride with the demented Firefly family...Captain Spauldings fried chicken tastes GOOD!

The Devils Rejects: More demented fun and horrors with the crazed modern day Manson family known as The Fireflys!

Haute Tension: (Only in the original french and uncut directors version) This has divided many once they realized what was going on, but for me the revelation made this one a cut above the rest. Great violent psychological horror and gore abound!

The Eye: One of the very few Asian horrors I like. More creepy than scary, but I prefer this story over Grudge and Ringu.

I am a veritable 'wuss'

I have to say that it's fascinating to me that some people can claim to never be scared or freaked out anymore.... is that really possible!

In any case I can't watch too many scary movies because i have very bad nightmares and refuse to sleep, but I will share some movies I think were very scary.

Well first of all Alien is more suspensful rather than downright horror-scary but when i watched it for the first time as an adult of hmmm 23 I didn't go to sleep that night. Another movie which freaked me out was Stephen King's 'It'... that demonic clown is just icky!

There is an excellent German movie made in the early 1990's which I cannot remember the name of about a group of scientists running an psychological experiment with normal people grouped into 'prisoners' and 'wardens', it's very, very disturbing and based on real life experiments. Sometimes i think it's movies which have some reality or truth to them that really scare you, in particular ghost/exorcism tales.

Awwww Scarymovie....

Unfortunately, you have to be at least 13 to be a member of Epinions. See, this is a website for consumers to write reviews of various products, such as movies. We have this private message board section for all the reviewers to come chit chat, blow off steam a bit, and get to know each other in between writing reviews.

Feel free to stick around the message board here though.. I won't tell ;)

Scary movies.

Hmmmm, I have recently been a horror movie addict, and i have seen many scary movies, some that are indie films, but are still amazing, so my favorite film's are Hell raiser Inferno, good story line, creepy bits, creepy charicters. Also House of 1000 corpses is awesome, dosent realy have a plot, but for those who like horror watch that. Evil dead, very good and creepy, and last but not least the descent, very scary, creepy story line, and some major jumps, put me off caving for a while.
Oh yeah and the texas chainsaw massacare was ok too.

Amytiville Horror = BORING/Comedy

OMG Amytiville Horror is one the most BORING movies i've ever seen. I watched it last week with a few friends at night, lights off, sound turned up nearly to full expecting to crap ourselves with horror...im sitting there waiting for somthing to happen....an nothing happens the whole movie is pretty much people just sitting there talking about crap...ohh and I am 99.9 percent sure that I saw the string rocking the rocking chair. If you want a good fright then dont get this movie. I think that weird thing in the window is funny seeing as it looks like a purple haired pig with hair. In conclusion this movie should not be clasified as horror.

I guess no one here has seen the 1984 BBC TV movie Threads, about the aftermath of a nuclear war? I saw that movie when I was 15 and I think it screwed me up for the rest of my life. It made The Day After look like an afterschool special. The hospital scene alone gave me nightmares for days.

Hmmm I'll have to look for that one.

Scariest movie ever? My Opinion

First I would like to comment. While reading the post I was hoping to see "THE TALE OF TWO SISTERS" listed. Well, I found it listed (member: pneuma_9000 posted on: Mar 20 06, Janghwa, Hongreon- A Tale Of two Sisters 2003... What made me think of that was someones post asking for something that really messed with our minds. Well, Tale of two sisters did just that for me. I've watched it twice and still can't figure out what happened as their are so many things going on at the end. This movie is about a sister that does not realize her sister is dead, and continues to interact with her as if she was still there. When it comes to the ending of this momive if anyone has any idea please let me know! This movie reminded me of the grudge.

My all time scariest movie was "THE AMITYVILLE HORROR" (original). When the house says "GET OUT" I about dumped right there LOL. The new 2005 version is more clear on the characters and events of the original movie.

The movie I watched when I was young that scared the living daylights out of me was called "IT'S ALIVE". I think I was only around 11 when I watched it on HBO with my really cool babysitter. I did watch it again just this year (im now 36) and it still was pretty creepy. It is about a baby that is born that is disfigured (looks like a little devil) and really messed up (I think due to chemicals mother was around or ingested). Immediately the delivery room notices there is something wrong as the mother is having extreme labor. The baby is born and people are being ripped apart. The baby takes off all by itself from the delivery room, and goes wild on the town. The father is dead set on getting this child and destroying it. Check it out. Kinda corny, but weird!

I LOVE movies about angry ghosts. Anything like that I will watch. A GREAT movie was "THE HAUNTING". I think that movie wasn't "scary", but the scenery, story, and actors were incredible to me.

The most current movie I just watched is called "THE DARK" and I thought it was GREAT. It is about how the dead found a way to come back by sacrificing another. The dead child interacts with the family of a missing child.

RE: Boring!

I've been looking for a decent horror myself for quite some time. And I completely agree. Horror movies for the most part just aren't worth watching any more. Last one that got me was The Ring. I liked the 'absolutely no escape' theme. I liked Cabin Fever since the story isn't completely rejectable in real life. But, it was more eary than scary.
I'm an atheist. But, since I went to catholic school, sometimes I find the 'dark side of christianty' themed movies fun and intreguing. But, they don't really get me. SO PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU FIND ANYTHING!

My only suggestion and vindication:
Tonight, I plan to play (or at least start) the fourth silent hill, alone, in the dark, since the second one really got to me.

Freaky Movies

Ok, Being Honest, when i first saw "saw" the guy in teh wire going syco freaked me out. And "wolf creek", i found it disturbing. In "hide and seek" where that freaky charlie monster thingo slashes onto teh screen in the guys dream... that was really wierd. I seiriously cracked up laughing in "saw" when the guy with teh slit throat comes down tehs tairs just after the asian man gets his head blown off by teh trip wire, he makes a funny noise it made me laugh so much, we rewinded it like 60 times just to hear it it was so funny. but i could not sleep at all after watching "wolf creek"

Scariest in my opinion

1. The Entity (about a woman who's raped repeatedly by an entity. Was suposed to be a true story.)

2. If I Die Before I Wake (a family is awakened by two guys and brutally raped and killed in front of each other, but the teenage daughter outsmarts them. Very graphic, realistic. Mostly why it's scary.)

4. 28 Days Later (Could happen, maybe. Infection spreads causing rage. Not the typical zombie film. Isolation/loneliness and despair.)

That's about it off the top of my head. I hated The Ring, The Saw, Gothica, ect. All the new "trendy" movies are so boring. Making you sit through the whole boring film, just to have some retard plot at the end. I hate movies like that.

OMG thank you. That's what happened to me in high school after watching The Day After. It's so scary cause it could happen and the devistation afterwards. Not all scary movies have to envolve chainsaws! In my eyes, this is much more frightening.

Here's a few recommendations:

Manos: The Hands of Fate
Devil Fish
Barney's Great Adventure
Alien: Resurrection
The Incredible Melting Man
Blood Waters of Dr. Z

For the scariest movies or the most likely to be on MST3000?

I couldn't have sat through Manos: the Hands of Fate if not for the MST3K commentary track. AWFUL AWFUL Movie.

Eyes

For me the scariest movie I've seen recently is "The Hills Have Eyes". Just the fact that it took place in todays setting and that the desert is such a mystery.

I want to see a movie that REALLY scares the pants off me. Ghosts really scare me.....any suggestions??

Hasnt been mentioned

I think "It" (1990) by Stephen King was mentioned. That movie made me scared of clowns for a long time after that. I swear that idea for the "Can't sleep clowns will eat me shirt" came from me lol.

Also Children of the Corn was scarey since I watched it when it first came out to VHS and I wasn't supposed to.

Ghost Ship was also one of my favorites. The dancing scene with the captain, the little girl, and the cable... priceless. If you want to stay alive, don't sin....

RE: Boring!

I'm a huge psychological horror fan and I too had been looking for something to spook me. I came across Session 9 by accident one night on one of the movie channels. I didn't have any expectations because I had never heard of it before. It doesn't have the visual guts and gore of your mainstream horror flick. It has the deliberated creepiness of The Shining with minimal visual effects like Ringu.

I'd like to see your opinion of this movie if you haven't seen it yet...

opinion of scary

I read almost everyone scary movie and conclused that its basely about ghost, clown, monster, hell, or undead. so i came up with each one on my own opinion. dont get me wrong, there might be more.

Clown - isnt scary one bit. the movie "it" is lame when you figure out its just a huge spider.

Undead - zombie are not real and never will be, impossible. cant be scary and never scared me. runnign zombie is probably the same thing as someone trying to chase you and kill you with a knife but instead eats you.

monster - thats funny.. i was never scare of any "monster".

hell - we are all afriad of hell, no one can denied that. hell has been spoken as the scariest thing that haunts you to reality. but hell movie isnt scary, seem a lot but never think any is scary.

ghost - a very interesting subject. since ghost are known to exist, i believe thats what scares us because when we see a movie and compare it to reality, we know its real. ghost movie such as juon, the eye (good example of ghosts), or any other ghost movie or unexplain things that happen such as the blair witch project due to people dissappearing, unexplain figure or things moving.

of all the things that scare us is ghost. when you think about it, people are scare of death, the unexplainable things that happen. well, i may be wrong, maybe ghost isnt what scares us. why not hell? well thats simple because you will suicide, if you see something so terrfiying. you wouldnt stop and think about what will happen afterlife. same goes to nightmare, when you have a nightmare, you want to wake up, want to die or something or the nightmare wouldn't end. other such as zombie and "clown" lol, isnt what scares us, we're only scare of such movies because it shows or give us a little of what scares us. well thats only my opinion. sorry, i got off track but anyways, what scares me is ghost movie. any movie related to spiritual figure creeps me out.

First of all you are 14 and hitting puberty, therefore you didn't even exist when those movies you stated to have watched, first came out. Today Movies have enhanced graphics, effects and so on, making old horrors look less scary. Don't lie, you had the light on. Your just another typical young kid trying to act tough.

scariest movies

Be warned not to take this message seriously. I'm just releasing some steam over the internet, because I'm currently opinion happy and have nothing else better to do.

(Rant Time)

You sure have lame views on scary movies. Seriously, 'Edward Scissorhands' is not a horror movie, in fact it's in the comedy section at Blockbuster. Just because a movie is a classic or was scary at the time doesn't mean it's the scariest movie ever made. I hate it like hell when people think they sound sophisticated for calling movies like 'The Shining', 'The Exorcist', or worse 'Alien' the scariest movie ever. The truth is that although they were once classics, the visual effects and camera work of today far overshadow classics such as those in the scare factor.

(End of Rant)

Some scary movies in no particular order:

Visions of Suffering
The Nameless
The Amityville Horror
Juon: The Grudge
The Descent
The Hills Have Eyes
Salo

(Returns to Rant)

Also Hostel isn't violent compared to movies like 'Guinea Pig' and 'Aftermath'. Now I'll meaninglessly list the sickest movies ever made in order:

1. August Underground Mordum

Basically the most violent fake snuff/rape/incest film ever. Some people just have some sick fetishes. Involves guy forced to cut off of his own 'thing' using a pair of tiny scissors on a grainy camera. Need I say more.

2. Aftermath

Basically gory fake necro porn

3. Cutting Moments

8 minutes with a stationary camera of torture, rape, and necrophilia and a guy gets beaten to a bloody pulp with a fire extinguisher.

4. Cannibal Holocaust

This is mostly because they slaughter real live animals. Banned in several countries.

5. Guinea Pig: Flower of Flesh and Blood

6. Murder-Set-Pieces

7. Ichi the Killer(uncut)

8. Salo:120 Days of Sodom

9. Men Behind the Sun

10. Irreversible

This movie is irreversible

(End of Rant Part II)

I apologize for all that random banter. I just had to get that out and educate random uninformed people that I don't know. I'm getting way too opinion happy :0

RE: Scary monsters

I've been watching scary movies my whole life- I was not a very sheltered child when it came to movies- my father and I watched everything together. So, none of those movies really scare me. Now, movie moments- that's another story. For example, Michael Myers quietly staring at someone through a window is more scary than him actually stabbing someone. Psychological fear is much more scary, I think. Oh, and there are a few scenes in the latest Amityville Horror that freaked me out- but as a whole movie, it doesn't do it. I'd like all of the truly greatest scares (great in my opinion, anyway) to be made into a montage.

That Bravo show, the 100 scariest movie moments and the sequel to that show were lame- they did not showcase anything really that scary- maybe a couple things- I don't know who here has seen it.

I have a friend that thinks Hostel is the scariest movie ever- I think it is frightening that something like that can really happen, but as far as making me jump in my seat- not a chance.

Best Horror/Thriller Movies of our time

I have watched just about every single horror/thriller movie that is highly rated by everyone here. Here are my suggestions of the 5 GREATEST(not necessarily the scariest)movies that i have seen in my time on this earth, with ratings out of 100

1.SAW 1, 2 & 3. You have to watch them all they are the best movies i have ever seen.SAW 2 was my favourite.Great twists. Rating = 98

2. SE7EN. If you have not seen this movie then you are definately missing out. One of the best i have ever seen.
Rating = 95

If you have not seen these movies then you may as well go and jump off a cliff. Or if you prefer it you can go and rent or borrow them or even better you can buy them. Without being the scariest movies of all time these 5 movies are the best psychological thriller/mystery/horror movies of all time. If you disagree then check your pulse.

Real Is Scary!

The reason why Exorcist is so scary is because possessions do happen! Either that..or sickness of the mind happens. :-p The part that creeped me out is when she's coming down the stairs....uuhh. Still creeps me out thinking about it. I don't think there is really "scary" anymore...if anything, disturbing. High Tension is a reaaly disturbing flick, I recommend you watch. Also...hills that have eyes is pretty bad too.

Try watching the Exorcist when it first came out in theaters and when Linda Blair's head starts spinning the man seated behind you has an epileptic seizure. He kicked the back of the chair, jerked around, and made strange sounds. My mom and her friend, after they calmed down, found my aunt outside the theater needing to go home and change her pants. ;)

The Vanishing (subtitled original)

As far as we know, demons and monsters and witches and those sorts of things are only in the pages of books and on screen. But people who kill, they're real. And the irrational needs that can grip us, they're real too. That's why the scariest movie is THE VANISHING.

A man's girlfriend disappears. He is so consumed with the need to know what happened to her that he spends years trying to find the person who can tell him. When he does, he agrees to put himself completely in that stranger's control.

Hollywood re-made the movie with a listless Jeff Bridges and a ludicrous happy ending. The original version in French and Dutch is the stuff nightmares are made of.

none of them freaked me out on an emotional and psychological level as much as a little film out of Austria called Funny Games did.

*shutter*

The movie is getting an American re-make starring Naomi Watts and Tim Roth. Funny Games U.S. is set for release in April. The IMDB page is here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808279/

The trailer is available on YouTube.

I saw the trailer for Funny Games at the theater a few weeks ago. It did look freaky.

RE: U GUYS DONT NO SCARY

edward scissorhands was created by tim burton in 1990. it's not really considered a "classic" and it's anything but horror.
edward was supposed to show the life from the view of an outsider, and was meant to reflect Tim Burton's own childhood.
johnny depp simply played a man who had "scissor hands" and when he would go to school with the children, they were terribly scared of him, but edward coped with his issues and developed good from the bad... i wouldn't classify something that had to do with what i just mentioned as "horror".

so, i suggest you actually watch that movie before you go running off saying "horror" when actually, it's more a work of art.

Re: Scariest Movie

Hey everybody, it's been a while since I've posted. I'm glad to be back. I'm surprised no one mentioned it, but "Saw" was pretty scary when it came out. If not for the movie itself, but just the idea of how it could happen and the whole psychological thriller aspect. Sure, the additions to it afterwards are hardly worth mentioning, I still think Saw hold a place on the list.

I couldn't agree more....I started my movie write-off with this film....

I recently saw The Vanishing talked about as one of the imports/remakes that actually had the same director as the original. Kinda surprised me after seeing all of the flack that it has gotten over the years. I kinda liked the remake but tend to agree that the original is better.

As a sidenote: Boy IMDb has gotten icky lately. *Not* impressed with its loading time right now.

Difficult question...

To date, the original Halloween still scares me the most!

1)I can't watch it alone, unless it's during daylight and I know I won't be alone at night.

2)hearing the musical score will elicit the chills

3) my neighbor dressed up as Michael Myers at a Halloween party and I had to stay away from him!

But, The Vanishing (original) is equally terrifying in a different sense.

Psycho(still can't shower unless it's a glass stall), and The Shining, are nightmare inducing too.

Have you seen the 'newspaper' parody in Mel Brooks' High Anxiety..??

Maybe laughing at that one might drive the real shower scene from your mind . . ..

I don't know who gave Mike Myers permission to release the LOVE GURU, but he did, and yes people are dying, it was so bad.

I kinda like some of the stuff coming out of Asia personally. The US seems to be stuck on remakes a lot lately. Or torture horror.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

Hands down, no need to think it over, I have 'my' answer to this: Alien.

The combination of the very realistic work-a-day joes, the confines of a ship in space, the complete isolation, and the relentless nature of the alien...*Shudder*. And all these years later, it still sends that same delicious chill down my spine.

Talyseon.

Scariest Movie ever IMO

still to this day.. i think the scariest movie ive ever seen.. was Children of the Corn.. something about a cult led by a teenager who convinces kids to kill adults.. creepy.. hopefully the remake doesnt suck. . also.. Stephan Kings It.. was pretty much super scary.. partly. because i have an unusally strong fear of clowns...also. the rob zombie remake of halloween was pretty good.

Scariest movies...

I've been searching for years to try & find a good movie that actually makes my skin crawl, but it's just not happening! I have to admit that oldies are the goodies... Salem's Lot, The Omen, Halloween, The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, etc... It seems as if "horror" films are getting cheesier and cheesier these days! With it being Halloween "season", I've been flipping through the On Demand channels and came across Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects... LOVED IT!! There were bad reviews, but that's because you have to have somewhat of a "twisted" mind like Rob.. ;o) I started watching the prequel.. House of 1000 Corpses, but, though not bad, it wasn't as good as the 1st. I also think he did a great job on making his own version of Halloween last year.
So, 2 nights ago I found myself flipping through the channels... once again, trying to find a good thriller to freak my mind... and I saw that The Shining was showing on A&E. I know I saw it as a child, but couldn't remember much.. except for the "red rum, red rum" parts, of course!! So, I decided to watch it again, since nothing else was on. I'm so glad I did! 27 years later... the movie is MUCH better & makes a lot more sense now!! haha! I actually loved it and wondered how I was ever able to sleep after watching that movie when I was 7! Needless to say, I think The Shining has moved to the top of my "favorite horror film" chart!
By the way... a couple of my friends recently saw Quarantine. One liked it and the other one didn't. My sister also saw it and said the movement of the camera actually made her sick...although, it may have been because she's 6 months pregnant... hmmm..
Anyway... if anyone has seen this I'd like to hear your thoughts on it...

It's a tie:

Scary/creepy: Carrie or The Shining

Scary/made me jump and want to hide: Alien

scary movies

ive been watching scary movies ever since i can remember lol and i rarley get scared (by the way im 16 and my dad let me watch r rated movies when i was 4 so lol)

i watched the shinnng and it was knda scary because it was soo suspensful. its about this man and his family going to a hotle to watch over it and make sure that it is ok over the winter. they have to do this because the snow is so bad that they get snowed in. he starts to go crazy and gets posessed by this ghost. the ghost was a man who had to do the same thing but he went crazy and killed his twin daughters and his wife. then shot himself. it stars jack nicklson.

another one would have to be Dead silence. it wasnt that scary but it was ok at some times. this movie is about this one guy (whos was J from summerland and hes also in trueblood) goes back to see his father after his wife gets killed misterously after reciving this doll. little did he know that the doll was alive and that there was a lot more who was property of Mary Shaw. a women suspected of killing a little boy back in the day. she was killed two weeks after the kid dissapered. now he is on a mission to stop Mary Shaw from seeking her revengence on all the people who kiled her.

nothing has scared me in 2 years and i cant wait to get the same feeling of hoplessness from a movie lol

I know what's the scariest

Well, I've had a good look through this thread and I have the answers you were looking for!

Yes, I agree there's some pretty scary movies you have all mentioned, I remember the first time I sat down properly and watched Stephen King's IT and didn't have a clue what was going on, when I saw that clown's yellow teeth it was pretty intense. The Shining has a pretty disturbing atmosphere for its time, also Poltergeist which I just recently got all 3 movies on DVD cos according to something I read 4 of the actors all died pretty gruesome deaths. Poltergeist is very creepy the whole idea of it, that Reverend Kane guy, that's just creepy on it's own like he's the beast coming for the child. I guess a lot of these films are scary that you all mention but really it's the first time you watch them. It's scary when you don't know what's happening or what's coming around the corner next. I don't think that films more recent have been very scary in my opinion, I think movie making has lost it's edge as far as making it look scary or atmospheric like some of the older ones.

Also I have seen the Grudge films, that was pretty freaky when you'd see the ghost and it'd make you jump. I have also seen and own a copy of The Audition, that's a very oddball film, got a serious story to it, makes you wanna be careful if you ever met somebody like the guy in the movie.

Anyway having said all that I now want to tell you what you all need to watch and it ain't no MOVIE either! It's simple, if you want to watch something scary then you can buy this in America on DVD like I did. I know I got mine from somewhere and there was another place called Blue-lips.com or something but they were a set of idiots and were very rude and insulting about me purchasing from them.

What you want is a copy of the box set collection of TRACES OF DEATH. It's actually real stuff, gore and horror all put together, there's some sicko stuff there for anybody to watch with plenty disturbing footage there to either make you squirm, run behind the sofa or in some cases hurl your guts up.

Go and buy and watch TRACES OF DEATH, real people being killed and stuff. It's horrible but it's real life and that in my opinion is the best and scariest horror film. Not some fictional made up stuff, once you've seen Traces of Death you won't be fussed much anymore and realise that all those films you all said are mostly story driven movies.

Have a nice day! :-O

RE: I know what's the scariest

I have to hand it to Sam Raimi, his latest film Drag Me To Hell scared the heck out of me! It was an honest to goodness old fashioned scary movie. No gory body count or countless hacks n slash, just scary stuff and lots of scenes that make you jump back in your seat.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

I personally didn't like The Cell.

To be honest, most movies that made me jump as a kid don't seem to do much for me now at all. I do admit that I jumped several times and was creeped out the night I watched The Ring ... yes, the American version. I know purists will scoff at that. :P
