Scary movie...

Honestly a film hasn't really freaked me out lately. When I was a little kid This House Possessed: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083192/combined really freaked me out. I don't really remember it all that well (the date would put me at eight years old) but I remember it got to me pretty well at the time. Anyone else catch that one?

Lately though, I'm not really sure if I've been scared. I remember being terribly uneasy at The Others, I kinda dug Below for that respect, was disquieted by In the Mouth of Madness but hmmmm... Maybe Candyman kinda freaked me some.

the Exorcist

I read the Exorcist when I was very young. The book still is scarier t than the movie but the Exorcist has withstood the last 25 years as still the most frightning movie from beginning to end.

...but maybe it just depends on what generation you're viewing it.

My mom told me she's still freaked out by "Creature from the black lagoon" A man in a rubber suit, real scary :) It's all about the time you originally saw it. Plus people who think Exorcist is scary probably saw it w/out knowing about the story. Now with all the joke movies and such, it can't be scary b/c we've laughed at it for years.

I think real-life dramas are the scariest b/c I fear they could actually happen - Like "Day After Tomorrow"

RE: Scariest movie ever?

:) When I was a kid I did get kinda freaked at Friday the 13th and honestly I can see why after watching it again. Kinda cheesey but interesting camera work.

The show that really freaked me out was this old radio show though... My imagination is a bit better if I'm not really able to see the stuff.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

My answers are gonna be out in left field compared to you guys...

I think the all-time scariest movie is Psycho. For recent scary/horror films, I'd go with The Sixth Sense only because it was so intelligent compared to things like the Freddie and Halloween films. I recently saw and enjoyed Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days, but neither are in the same league as Psycho.

RE: Scariest movie ever?

:) Left field? Geeze, I think mine was left field too (a TV movie made back in the early eighties and possibly not released to video?):P

Psycho is a pretty decent scary movie. Interesting twisty plot that is fairly surprising if you haven't been told about the twists beforehand.

The Sixth Sense impressed me quite a bit really. We actually put it on at the college theater that I ran and it was a whole lot of fun just sitting there and watching people jump at a couple of the scenes (everyone jumped in a few places regularly).

:P I should point out that I was maybe eight or ten when I saw Friday the 13th and hadn't seen a whole lot of horror films at that point. I even saw it on regular TV. That was around the time that V came out and maybe that might work as a horror film. I thought that one was a lot of fun anyhow and it had its moments.

scariest movie

I'll never forget how riveted the movie audience was to the fate of the heroine in texas chainsaw massacre. When she finally got away everyone was exhausted as they left the theater. More recently, I was truly scared with 6th sense. One guy noticably walked out in one scary part and was trembling as he practically ran down the isle to get away from the experience. A recent creepy indie is killers in the woods.

Scariest Movie

I have the same feeling about the Exortcist. I saw it as a kid and it scared me silly. I took my wife to see the re-release in the theatres and I was embarrased. All I could think about was Gilda Radner doing her exorcist impression. My wife was NOT impressed.

Scary is different today. I think Japanese style scary is pretty good. Liked 'The Ring" and "The Grudge". I also think making zombies move fast was a good move to make things scarier. In the new Dawn Of The Dead, the zombies can move really fast and they are fairly strong. This changed all the rules for ridding yourself of multiples of zombies. Although I feel there is a place in my heart for older scary movies I enjoy the new film effects to intensify my scary experience.

scary.

I found House Of 1000 Corpses to be thrilling; on the edge of scary. The girl, Baby, Rob Zombie's wife is creepy enough of her own. I can't stop watching it, and now with the sequel in theatres soon, it should be good. I feel sad that no one else listed this. :(

RE: scary.

House of 1,000 Corpses was kind of an interesting movie, although it was more cheesy than scary I thought. Actually, I don't recall being frightened by the film even once. ;)

Scariest Movie?

I don't know about scariest, but the most disturbing movie I've seen is Angel Heart starring Robert De Niro and Mickey Rourke. This one kept me awake for hours after seeing it the first time. Sheila

RE: Scariest Movie?

White Noise is the freakiest movie I've seen of late. Every time I see some static on my VHS tapes, I turn it off immediately. I don't need to be hearing any msgs from the dead! But I think what makes it scary is that people have actually done this and claim to have heard/seen people. The DVD has a little piece about these people who really believe in this.

RE: Scariest Movie?

I was about to rent White Noise last week along with Hide and Seek, but then I spotted Boogeyman on the rack and opted to get that instead (so to save money). From the trailer of White Noise, the movie doesn't appear to be scary. But, I'm still going to wait for it to hit the movie stations. I'm just thinking it won't really be worth it to give it the rental go.

But, just ghosts in general...I'm really fascinated with the phenomena. I've never seen a ghost myself, although, I've been to haunted places. I find the stories really interesting. Has anyone ever seen a ghost or know of any stories to tell? I've got one I can think of...but, I'm not such a great story teller. I also forget some of how it goes (since it's a story my friend spoke to me about a long time ago).

This took place back in the late 19th century, where a rich family lived in a house. The caretaker that worked there was like a peasant type. Not rich, but fortunate enough to have a job. He had a daughter who fell in love with the rich family's son. When the rich family knew they were together, being the snobby people that they are, they locked her away in the attic. The son didn't know of this and neither did the caretaker. When he asked the family, they lied and told them they didn't know or that she ran away or some other nonsense. The caretaker ended up working for the family still whatever it was, not knowing what to do...or something like that. Anyway, the girl was chained up in the attic (I think). The family never fed her or anything, and she was in there a week, had lost her voice, until finally one day she tried calling out to the father. She ended up falling from the window upstairs and got impaled on the pointy gate below where her father was standing. Seeing this, he came to the house with an axe and chopped up everybody inside. The mother, the father, the son, and even the grandmother.

Today, that is a very warped house. The structure of the house I'm told is very strange. Like, there's a door somewhere that opens up revealing another section of wall behind it (which there's supposed to be some kind of special room back there). Inside the house it's supposed to be really hot in one part I think, and then if you go into the attic it gets really cold. In a way that you'll need a jacket. It might be the opposite though, from cold to hot -- I forget. There's a lot of other strange stuff that goes on in this house. My friend knows about it because his brother is friends with this Realtor, and my friend and his brother have both been inside the house. They've even had run-ins with some of the ghosts.
