Your baby can read

I have just returned the 30 day trial of "Your baby can read". I believe that I read a review on this site from a young mother who didn't like it either. However we agree on some aspects and others we don't. So here is my opinion as a grandmother. I taught my daughter (25) how to recognize words so she could read. She was recognizing her colors at age 6 months with a 95% accuracy. It is true that what they teach is memorization with this program and personally, I don't think it makes much difference. Think about learning the alphabet, what is the purpose of that really? There is none. Phonics they will learn in school, I hope or some form of it so is it really an issue? Tt wasn't for my daughter. I taught her to recognize words before she went to pre-school and when she arrived in K-1 they were amazed at what she knew.

Now back to the program. What I didn't like was not being able to match up the words to the video with the cards or the book and secondly to not have the color being taught with the word color. For example, they wanted the child to read yellow before seeing the color yellow and this to me is confusing. Next, the video mentioned over 17 words or more in the starter video and I could only find 5 in the box of words and 10 in the booklet. The video was boring to me, no excitement in their voices. It was monotone. This is not going to hold a child's interest and it certainly didn't hold my granddaughters. I use to teach pre-school and I could never get the children's attention if I talked monotone. I had to be excited in order to hold their attention. All mothers know this much. The material they claim will last 5 years I probably taught my daughter in 2 1/2. I think people could do just as well buying flash cards with the words gorilla on it and the picture on the other side just like I bought my daughter. You can sing the songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and they can memorize them. I see nothing wrong with that. Buying a few videos for over $200.00 is to me a waste of time. I would rather teach them myself. If you are going to spend the money, why not just spend the time instead. Sell yourself to others MOMS. ha! God Bless! MIMI
