Epi Drop Downs
I have the Epinions (non-JS) drop downs on my profile page. You can check it out there at the bottom.
For those who want to experiment with using the new drop downs, send me an e-mail and I'll send you the code.
We'll put up a FAQ on how to use it soon, but I wanted to give the board folks a preview of how it looks for those who are interested. It looks very simple and is also fairly simple to use.
When we put up the FAQ, we'll create a deadline in which members who use javascript on their pages will have to delete it. We will disable javascript at the end of the deadline.

RE: Epi Drop Downs
That's great. Looks easier than my method of listing each one. But will I understand it? I hope I do so I can use that function in the drop drown which looks much more organized than my current way.
So if anyone has javascript now it will disappear? I'm not sure if I do or not, but I think I don't have any.
Thanks |

You will still have to list every review that you want in a form. That won't change.
Anyone using JS right now won't be affected, but we will soon give everyone a countdown. At the end of the countdown, all JS will go poof. |

OOPS!, I sheepishly asked for them. Please! Please! I didn't know! I just didn't know!! Next time I'll just take them. I'm gonna get the hang of this net yet, you bet.
Once I had the code all went well. I tested a couple of things on my home page and they worked out fine. Hey, this is more than a baby step for this fragmented PC guy.

Thanks again,

roheb,
be advised that your profile page is in violation of the epinions.com rules.
You are not allowed to use JavaScript. JavaScript is a no-no.
Actually promoting JavaScript on the boards...

Will the JavaScript drop-down boxes on your profile just stop working, or will they go poof because some automatic program will remove them?

Sorry, I thought about creating a drop down linking to the Epi Encyclopedia, but didn't want to drive traffic away from my profile. (Is this where I put the smilie moment to pretend it was a joke?)
Seriously, I will ask my engineer about all the things you brought to my attention. And then I'll reply here for everyone to see. Thanks Mobi. |

RE: I'd love
Here's the scoop from Epinions. It was actually my mis-communication on what the code was. I'll blame my lack of knowledge about the specifics.
But, Joel Bito, the great man that he is explained it to me to where I think I understand.
Again, thanks to Mobi for helping me clarify and to Mona for bringing it to my attention.
According to B2, the Epinions drop down code is javascript, but it's the only javascript that will be allowed. The reason he created it like this was because he noticed that the members liked the way the drop downs worked and he wanted to duplicated it to how people were using it. Having javascript in this way (Epi javascript) allows us to use it in a safe way. All other javascript on the site will be disallowed very soon, but you'll be aware when we alert you.
I hope this makes sense. If it doesn't, you can reply here and I'll try to clarify, or you can send me an e-mail.
Thanks again.

Ha, many of us are "not even sure what javascripts are..."
Don't let that stop you from trying drop down boxes though. I would suggest you wait a bit until Garret gets all in order. There is still a bit of confirmation going on as to codes, how they are used and what they are.
Garret said he would get back to this thread with an answer so I would wait until then.
Having said that, when the time comes to try it let me know how you are doing. Garret was able to send me an email with some very brief and clear instruction and it works for me, no prob. I know you will be able to get through it too.

He is mistaken ;-)
The sites rules are quite clear about not allowing any JavaScript.
Making exceptions to crystal clear rules isn't the wisest thing to do. Exceptions are harder to communicate.
Most importantly, it isn't necessary to make this exception at all, so why make it all?
As has been mentioned more than once on this board that you can make drop-down menus without resorting to JavaScript.
Are we to understand that the idea is to change the site rules to allow unneeded code? Huh?
Isn't it a better, simpler idea to tell B2 to make it work within the established rules?
BTW, I don't think the "JavaScript will go poof" statement has been clarified yet.
Just what is gonna happen? How will it affect profiles of members that are long gone?
And how will it stop member's JavaScript without affecting all the JavaScript epinions.com still uses?

RE: I'd love
I'll be very sorry to see my "read a random review" button go. But I guess I don't have any choice.
Hey GG, I don't suppose you could get B2 to program me a random review button, after all, I'm just one guy. While you're at it, when do I get to start abbreviating my name? Although PG for Panguitch sounds disappointingly benign.

As I stated, we listened to the members who wanted their drop downs to work much like they had been using them.

I'm sure not everyone would enjoy being grouped into "we" like that. But I'm not exactly sure what your question is asking. Allowing unneeded code is probably number 500 on a list of 500 things members are worried about.

B2 is a strong man. I'm not sure if I want to demand him to do anything unless I have a bodyguard.

Thank you for a real question that I can answer without spinning myself into the dirt. Though I haven't been told for sure, I think what might happen is that the non-Epi JS will get scraped from all the profile pages and when that is done, the profile pages will then be coded (is that the right word?) to disallow future non-Epi JS. |

Thanks guys! That's nice of you to set up a drop-down alternative, since so many people seem to like them. I have never tackled a drop down project but I may give these a shot when I have some extra time.
