New Search Stuff...

It looks like the search has changed. At first I was really excited, so I decided to try searching for some of my "missing" unsearchable reviews. Maybe this is just a temporary thing, but it looks like it gives privilege to media categories, books in particular. Within the Travel category, hotels seem to come above other destinations.

I've found some categories which previously garnered a lot of hits are now unfindable. For example, I'm currently unable to get to, say, any major U.S. city as a destination (Chicago, D.C., etc.), or to Walt Disney World or any of the related reviews.

Sorry if I'm jumping the gun and this is just a temporary situation, but I thought I'd ask.

RE: New Search Stuff...

Sorry, now I'm being a total pain. I'm also noticing multiple listings on some things, and the first one won't have any reviews under it. For example - LUSH Happy Soap.

I'll fill out a formal bug report tonight, I have to run out to a breakfast meeting now.

Probably best way to go

Filing a bug report rather than posting is probably best so that Epinions can track issues. I know this happens to me sometimes at work.

The software developers will say, "You can't tell me 2 things in the hall, something in a meeting and email me a fourth. It seems like a form, but to me, it's how I organize my day."

(shrug) I just want them to fix it, but it makes sense.

New Search Engine - it's here...

Just an FYI for this thread regarding Andy's current statement for this project:

Quote: Andyman
Apologies for the extended downtime. We encountered some issues in the course of our release and have been working through the night to resolve them. The good news is we're back now with a number of updated categories and updated site search. Take it for a spin.

A lot changed on the site. See something wrong? Use our bug reporting forms to let us know.

Thanks for your patience!

Andy

categories...

I've got a quick question...

I noticed with the updates that if I look at my reviews off my profile page (when you look at all of them), the category listing for many of my reviews is missing - there's simply nothing there, it's blank. However, when you click on the review, it still appears to be in the correct category if you look at the drill down info at the top of the review and if you look at the rates from advsiors in such in the correct category.

I checked a few with the new search and it appears there are new listings for some of these - should these all be moved or will the category come back eventually and we can leave them be?

Also, I noticed that in addition to missing a category on some of them, some of the ones that are missing a category are also missing the "Opinion On" follow-up - that is, there's no topic that the review is on - and I haven't been able to access some of those reviews (I'm in the process of filing reports on those). I'm guessing those got lost in translation somewhere and just have to be moved to correct topics eventually.

Jeff

Jeff - thanks for filing bug reports for the issues you noted; VH for you!

A suggestion: the Bugs board is for discussing (but not reporting) bugs. I think that if anyone wants or needs to discuss the details of a particular issue, in the hopes of getting some helpful information from other members or Brisbane - the Bugs board is the better place for those discussions.

I too have noticed this. My question is , What bug report do we file for "de categorized reviews?"

I've noticed all but one of my coffee reviews is now under Food and Wine - Food and Drink, but don't list a category. Many of my musical instrument reviews are decategorized, and one has disappeared altogether. My Pet reviews still remain decategorized. Even a few movies are now decategorized. This is only from a quick review during my first cup of coffee, God knows what else has happened. I submitted a bug report for the missing guitar review, but don't know which bug report applies for de categorized items.

I suggest you use the Incorrect Information report.

I found several of my reviews are now de-categorized. One review has neither a category nor a product listed, and I can't get to that review at all. It's a good earner, too. There is a correct listing for it, but I can't get into the review to move it. That also means that I can't get the URL to the review to report it. Not sure what to do about that. I'm hoping that some of this will fix itself as the system is shaken down in the next couple of days.

Absolute Disaster!

I usually come to these boards with a sense of dispassion and (I hope) articulation. That said:

The new search engine absolutely sucks!

There is no highbrow way to better describe this. I've spent over half an hour trying to find a lightbulb. When I've finally found what I'm looking for:

(closest example I can give to TRY to be useful about this)
http://www.epinions.com/Miscellaneous/xDN_~ge-price_range_0_10/search_string_~Compact%20Fluorescent

All of the listings are what would have previously been under "Related Details," clearly deliniating that these are NOT items that can be reviewed on ePinions. No such deliniation apparently exists now.

And yes, I'll chime in that whenever a search is done now, results are no longer organized by cataegory, so it's incredibly difficult to swim through the results to find what one is looking for.

Not that you care, but this is one vote for scrapping this new search engine and restoring the previous one!

I would like to suggest that we refrain from offering any opinion of yesterday's implementation and instead, focus on assisting Brisbane with addressing the issues as Andyman has asked. It's been six or seven hours since they brought the site back up, and I suspect that many of the staff members were up all night (Pacific time) working to get us to where we are now. Hopefully, they've been able to get some sleep...

This is a major implementation, and the staff has asked that we report any issues we find using the bug reports. Let's be helpful and do what we can to move this process along...

RE: New Search Engine

I'd file a bug report, but there's no good category and "General Feedback" is never correct.

This is, in a word, unpleasant. The search engine itself seems not to have changed (i.e., finding the items it ought to find). I like the "Narrow Search" being off to the side, sure, but what of the missing categories, misplaced categories, and so forth?

A simple search on "Oktoberfest" yields an assortment of results divided into useful categories, among them "Kitchen", "Toys", and something new, called "Spritis and Beers". Hm. Click on that, and the link trail shows "Home -> Home and Garden -> Spirits and Beers". Okay, so did these reviews move to H&G? Nope. No such subcategory on the H&G landing page. All spirit/liquor, wine, and beers still show as subcategories under the R&G landing page -- until you click on one, when it then looks like it belongs under H&G in the link trail.

You can click the "Spirits and Beers" link in that trail and get all 8000 results there, and click to reviews on the products there, which are all keeping the link back to a main subcategory of H&G. But there's no link to Spirits and Beers if you click to the H&G category landing page. Those categories still look like they did prior to the last rollout. On top of that, there are no "Just In" reviews at Home and Garden.

I know there were massive issues last night with deployment; but while some functional pages are changed, the category pages and apparently many linkages to subcategories were not. How did a QA department sign off on this in development? (Or is that a question best left unasked?)

For reporting bugs, you can always use the Bugs - Other report. That form only requires the URL where the problem occurred, and a detailed description of the problem.

I suggest that, in keeping with spirit and nature of this site, everyone should feel free to give their opinions.
I remind the Bobbing Tomato that providing our opinion on epinions.com is epinions.com's oldest standing request.
Your suggestion that anyone should refrain from doing so goes against what this site is for, what it is members do best, and what its members like to do. Are you the real Bobbing Tomato, or his Halloween twin?

This is not a permanent situation but the fix is going to take some time. Here's the issue. It's technical but let me see if I can explain it in a non-technical way.

1) We're now using Shopping.com's search engine
2) One of its features is that it chooses the most relevant results to show you at the top based on what people have clicked in the past
3) Since Shopping.com's site does not have some of our categories, like Travel, they have not yet had a chance to get any clicks
4) So they'll appear lower for a while until they develop some clicks
5) It might seem like they'll never get clicks this way but eventually the SE has a way of balancing things out

To find "Chicago:"

1) Enter "Chicago" in search, submit
2) On the results page, at left, click "More" under "Category"
3) Scroll down to "destinations" and click it

As people use the new search it will learn and things will eventually self-correct.

We've actually got some coding left to do on this piece so it will take a bit longer.

In the meantime our pages are still available to outside web search engines, which will continue routing hits your way.
