New WYSIWYG Text Editor Help Thread
Just trying to centralize questions/concerns/issues with the new text editor that Epinions has rolled out for review writing. Plus with this title, it might be easier for some to find advice on using the new editor.
There appears to be some issues with the way that it handles the HTML codes that are causing some problems...
Mona (ladyconsumer) had some advice in an earlier thread...
Quote: ladyconsumer I've been playing with the new editor, just to get a feel for it. For those of you experiencing the You have an opening ... without a closing ... error, it's pretty easy to see what's going on, if you hit the HTML edit button.
If line 1 is bolded, and line two isn't then what you want to see is this:
line1[br /][br /]line2
What you don't want to see is this:
line1[br />[br /]line2
See the difference... the line break is inside the bolding. That's really an error on the editor's part. And hopefully it'll be fixed.
The good news is that it's easy to fix this ourselves. You can use the HTML editor to move those symbols around, then hit "update". Or, you can use the highlight text and hit the bold button method but you have to be really careful to include only the text in your highlight, not the end of line character (the extra space at the end of the line). I've been playing with this for a while, and it seems to work.
Pretty? No. But at least it works.

New WYSIWYG Text Editor Help Thread
Barabara had a question about updating a review with pre-existing HTML coding and links...
Quote: ifif1938 Please, nobody has addressed my issue about links in write-offs. When I get a new review for my write-off, what will happen? will I be able to add them? and how, then what happens if I click update on my w/o page to add the new review? I read somewhere on this tread that if you already have HTML codes in your review they won't be accepted until changed, is that true?
I am very unhappy about this and now am going to attempt to finish writing a review to post. I also have no intention of writing directly onto the eps page since I have issues about losing reviews that way.
Is this time for a revolt!
I can't help wonder why they go and do this to us when there are so many other things needing fixing on the site, why mess with something that worked well and didn't need fixing.
Barbara...I guess I may have to end my write-off if there is no solution and its been such fun to host with so many entrys....*sigh*.............. |

RE: New WYSIWYG Text Editor Help Thread
Any ideas how to fix the hideous extra lines curse?
I put one line between my paragraphs and it publishes as three. I take them out, it puts them in. I take out all extra spaces, it publishes with no extra spaces.
This may be the first Eps related thing I've ever complained about, but it really bummed me out this morning and I tried to fix how ugly my review was!

I took out all but one space (in the editor after I brought it in from my word processor) between paragraphs and my latest review seemed to publish okay.

edited to add the part about the word processor |

Didn't work for me. I tried to take out that line in Word, and in the text editor. Neither worked. Now my reviews are icky. Yes, icky. |

The WYSIWYG coding/options seem to have disappeared from a review I'm writing. |

Hopefully the kinks get worked out. The idea is great, implementation as we all know, doesn't always work so well at first :)

Are you using the HTML text editor and deleting extra < br >?
Either way, I hope they fix this. The idea is to do away with us fussing with HTML, and it seems we have think and act like software engineers and find broken code. |

Different browsers
Ah, if I use Internet Explorer (I have IE 6 on this computer) it doesn't show the WYSIWYG but if I use Mozilla, it does. |

It sounds like they did a beta release with limited number of users, and a few did complain, but the rest of us didn't really understand what they were talking about.
Now we do . . . |

Yep. When I delete the extra break marks, I get the "You have an opening x without a closing y."
I'll be patient and stop complaining now. I promise! |

I apologize to the PTB. Had I just spent a tiny bit more time looking around, I would have seen the "Paste from Word" button that pops up a new window. If I paste into that window instead of the first box, all is well and Steffi is a happy reviewer. |

RE: New WYSIWYG Text Editor Help Thread
In regards to Barbara's post about her write off, I added a couple of links to my write off in the WYSIWYG editor last night and it worked fine. At the risk of insulting those who already know how it works, here's a primer:
If you want to insert Mozarella Cheese to your review:
1. Type in 'Mozarrella Cheese'
2. Use your mouse to highlight the words 'Mozarrella Cheese'
3. At the top of the editor box, there is an icon with two little circles linked together that looks kind of like a chain link. Click on that button.
4. A box will pop up asking for the URL. Paste the URL of the review in there, and everything should be fine.
When you do links in the new editor, you don't have to take out any numbers that appear after the 'www' to get it to work, like you had to in the HTML editor.
For example, I used to have to change www99.epinions.com/content_99999999 to www.epinions.com/content_99999999 That is no longer necessary.
Someone from Brisbane could correct me on this, but I think this editor is still just on certain servers. I had it last night with the 'www99' URL, but don't have it now on the 'www1' URL, so clearing cookies might still work to get out of it.
Personally, I love the new editor and think it's a step in the right direction, if for no other reason than the fact that I can edit it while it's in an 'easy to read' format.
Grace

I just had my first experience with this and now that I did it the hard way through the html editor, it's time to submit a second review using the Paste from Word button.
I can see where this will be helpful once we break our old habits.

Well, I'm ready to post a review and have read all the comments here..I take it I should use the paste from word button, but the box is so small...here is go, wish me luck
----
btw, I was just thrown off line from AOL, heard that nasty "goodbye" as I was going to write this message..if I had written directly onto the epinions page i would have lost my review...so folks its really chancy for those who do that...especially if on AOL |

Only pretzels and beer needed here. And a nice cigar on the deck . . .after work.

RE: New WYSIWYG Text Editor Help Thread
well it's done. and all went well. I used the small box to transfer from word. there was no spacing so I just gave each paragraph one space and it came out fine. I then highlighted the words I wanted to come out in Bold and hit hit the b and that worked fine. I didn't put the HTML's in my document as I usually do after reading all these posts.
I'm still worried about adding a link since I'm going to write a review about a product now that goes with the one I just posted and would love to link them. I'm not sure what Jurgrace is talking about in her post. Can we put a link in like the old way by adding the Url of the other review and use the blah ...
edited to say it worked here but would it on the review page

No end
I've tried multiple ways, pasting with the Word popup box, pasting from Word into Notepad and then pasting, and still have bad spacing and it's impossible to use bold, either through the box or by adding and . (I used the coding for bold/end bold here but it won't show it.) Every time, no matter which system I use, it insists I haven't closed the bold command, which is dumb if I've simply used the WYSIWYG system--it should recognize that I've stopped the bold, as most HTML editors do. Nonetheless, I've tried this each way to Sunday and it is not working properly that I can see. What problem was this supposed to fix again? I don't want to have to write on Notepad all the time and then paste over.
