Please fix catalog migration or teach the rest of us how to fix!

"so Many of my reviews had the product dissapear. Frustrated me as I only wrote my Y: The Last Man review last night and noticd it needed editing. Suppsed t say 'his mother; and the new president' LOL, but I missed the and which changes the meaning drastically. Also can't see the comments so I have no idea if someone's called me on it LOL.

Hope it's fixedsoon as I was looking forward to reviewing the series, but only have a limited time frame to get em in." =(

I reluctantly join this fray but do so determined to stay with it till it is either fixed by epinions.com staff or I figure out a work around. I see that complaints at this site date back three years. Epinions.com's attitude seems to be to shrug and say "stuff happens."

What reviewer can or should accept that?

My breaking point occurred with a review I posted to epinions nine days ago. It was printed. I received and read some evaluations and comments and then after two days, my review http://www.epinions.com/content_557363400324
"Edith Stein, etc."
descended into the dreaded limbo of
"Product info temporarily unavailable."

As of today Saturday July 23, 2011 the URL tells me that 39 opinionators have read and rated my review. Most of those ratings I have not read and cannot read so long as "Product info temporarily unavailable." I cannot even add a comment.

ACTION REQUESTED:

--(1) Please fix catalog migration NOW. Isn't three years of hand wringing long enough?

--(2) If epinions continues to throw up its non-nerdish hands, then please instruct epinionators how we might effectively "work around" catalog migration. Might we retrieve something of value if we withdrew/cancelled and migrated product and just started over ago with a disappeared review? What?

COMMENT: Just because epinions is helpless, doesn't mean its bureaucrats can't suggest how we the victims might do our part to set things right.

Cordially,

AOHCAPABLANCA/Patrick K

RE: Please fix catalog migration or teach the rest of us how to fix!

I agree entirely. I once saw a listing for a classic children's book I had hoped to review. 'Twas there, 'twas there, I tell you--in fact, it lingered nicely in the database for four years at least. I assumed that this was simply a standard in the Books category. Why should I concern myself with its potential disappearance? Heedlessness no more! Gone was my beloved listing, so I can no longer review the book. I can't SAP it, because somewhere it is still in the database, and a number of sources have encouraged me to wait until the problem is fixed, at which point book listings should reappear.

I volunteer for an online accessible library for the blind known as Bookshare. To date, Bookshare has over 119 thousand books. Very nice, for books that must all be individually scanned. At its peak, the Epinions database had over 600 thousand listings for books--understandable, considering that a listing does not take as much time to incorporate into the database as a 500-page novel takes to add to Bookshare. Now, though, I'm discovering a trend downward. The Epinions database went from 600 thousand books, to 300 thousand, to 200 thousand. Oh, Epinions, we should strive to be SUPERIOR to Bookshare, not to walk sedately alongside it! Unless, of course, we're offering the scanned copies of books in addition to the listings--then I would admire our little trend!

In all seriousness, I understand that catalog migration can be tedious and that Epinions and SDC are undergoing quite a bit of maintenance. However, I see your point and look forward to seeing the increase of book listings and review readability.

On a slightly unrelated note, Patrick, I'm looking forward to reading the comments on the review you mentioned as much as you are. I've been checking that review periodically to see whether its product and category listing have become available, and when they do, you should expect at least one more comment...

Product info temporarily unavailable

Every so often the odd review of mine became unavailable. Oh well, I thought.

I recently decided to write a couple of new reviews after being inactive for a while. The product I want to review is in the catalogue, but when I click on it, it tells me that the product is unavailable. In the meantime a ridiculous proportion of my reviews are subject to this Product info temporarily unavailable issue.

Is anything at all being done? Because it seems the problem is only getting worse. Now I can't even write a new review because of these products appearing and disappearing.

I did contact epinions about this a long, long time ago, and duly received absolutely no response.

RE: Product info temporarily unavailable

Triumph! I was suffering the same problem: most of what I had hoped to review was unavailable--to include classics that had surely been in the database since 1999. Too, at least 30 of my 248 reviews displayed the "Product Info Unavailable" message--AT LEAST. Now, I can find only two that still display that message, so I do believe we're experiencing a trend upward. Oh, and in reference to my earlier post suggesting that our database was emulating Bookshare's, I'm happy to report that Epinions is now up to 344 thousand book listings!

RE: Known Issues in the Catalog Migration

Hi can you suggest me that how can I add my products in the lists of products to ask for reviews from my clients?
