Epinions & Shopping.com: Upcoming Release

The next release for Reviews on Shopping.com is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2009 and will start at 9am PST.

This release will add rating and flagging features to reviews. Additionally, a nightly process will transfer Epinions members, reviews, and review ratings from Epinions to the new Community database. Because the release requires extensive database changes, reviews on Shopping.com will be unavailable during the entire update process (may take up to 12 hours).

During this planned outage time, reviews will not be shown on Shopping.com, and Community members will not be able to log into Shopping.com, view their profiles, or write reviews.
Please note that Epinions.com will not be affected by this release.

We invite and encourage the Epinions Community to try out these new features and give us feedback either by posting to the message boards or by sending an email directly to me.

Thanks again,

Christal

RE: Epinions & Shopping.com: Upcoming Release

Good to know that the process continues on. In reference to this release and other future changes, can anyone give us a hint of issues aired during this last weeks meeting?

I know a number of us are interested. Anything planned to share information or are all those who went to California under gag order.

Not trying to sound provocative, just asking.

RE: Epinions & Shopping.com: Upcoming Release

Christal, just a question. Is this a planned move to eventually shut down Epinions.com and merge with it's parent?

Perhaps Christal will respond at some time and I too welcome it, but, just to give you some information from a very recent thread stated by Sue (millinocket) a Lead and with confirmation from Larry (gamblin_man) another lead read on.

We need to remember that the shopping.com review writing platform is very rudimentary right now and will eventually become "the new Epinions". What we need to do is use it, test it, make suggestions as to what we want for our new site - because that's exactly what that platform is - the foundation for our new site. Epinions infrastructure is just too dated to be "fixed", we need a new one. And we're getting it. That the company has a place to build it is good for us, not bad. Word is that the sdc structure is far more stable than what we have here, I'll be happy to have Epinions move over there!

There's been no mention of phasing out IS, eliminating comments and ratings or anything else - they just need us to look at the foundation they've built before they begin adding features.

We've complained (bitterly if memory serves) about changes being rolled out without adequate testing in the past. So let's help test - we will get the things we want by asking for them. We will have input on changing the foundation by using it in its formative state. I plan to write several reviews at sdc - and have plenty to say about what I would like to see added/changed/etc.

I think some of the communication issues stem from the staff being incredibly busy - busy building us a better site. It has to be hard to be immersed in the new site all day and then try to explain it all to people not involved at their level. Like trying to tell someone with words how to ride a bike. I'm glad to have the chance to look at what they've built for myself.

Sue

RE: Epinions & Shopping.com: Upcoming Release

That's exactly right. Think of it this way - we're getting a brand new Epinions site - the development and testing of which is taking place over at shopping.com. This is terrific as it means we can see and test the new features as they get added, while not disturbing our own site.

I have every confidence that the new & improved site is going to be awesome!

Darn it. Now I wish I hadn't submitted two reviews over there over the weekend.

Me too! I wanted to be the first person to rate two reviews the big NH on shopping.com.

Thanks for posting that. It's good information and it looks like an excellent step forward.

Improvements are what all of us have been asking for and improvements are what we are getting it. After seeing the passion that SDC/Epinions has for all of us (the community) and the site' it has made me even more excited about this release.

It's good to hear at least a nugget of what went on in reference to the weekends interaction between you guys, issues discussed, questions asked, future expectations and overall feel

Keep in mind we did all sign an NDA agreement so you'll have to forgive us if the details are on the sparse side. The last thing we want is for a competitor to catch wind of this and undercut what the folks in Brisbane are working so hard to achieve. We all have put in countless hours to establish not only our own reputations as reviewers but also to the credibility of this site. So patience my friend as all will be revealed soon enough.

But rest assured many if not all of us came away very impressed and encouraged with the work going on. We all weighed in on numerous issues and tried to represent the interests of our own respective categories as well as the general community as a whole the best we could.

But beyond that it was great meeting many of the CLs in person. It was like a nice weekend long meet and greet. As I said in an email to the group, I can't thank the Epinions folks enough for last weekend. It's a trip I won't soon forget and the perfect capper for what was a great week long vacation for me.

Even that little bit is enlightening and comforting to hear. There are many, including me, who are quite interested.

Thanks for the shout out.

So when it all gets rolled up -

Does that mean there will be only one site with all content from both migrated to one or will their be two sites with all our content displayed on both? I don't see what the advantage would be to register with the other site and write stuff if it doesn't count here, which I consider my main site. Help me unnerstand - Cristal - please. To the rest of you I'm certainly capable of guessing as well as you are and would appreciate if you would let Cristal be the spokesperson.

I'd appreciate hearing the official information directly from Christal as well.

I too agree that I would like to hear information directly from above but I hardly think that the prime words spoken on this thread were guesses. The majority of words were from five Leads who I respect and have been in direct contact with Management including Sue (millinocket), Larry (gamblin_man), who confirmed Sues words in another thread, Mona (ladyconsumer), Ladysmom and kjell1979. I do trust them and expect them NOT to guess if addressing your question.

Perhaps you weren't being as disrespectful as I imagined and if I am out of line, I certainly apologize.

pops

edited to add another leads name, note that I referred to Lead, Larry, in respect confirming to Sue's words and add a few of my own.

Pops,

I don't think anyone meant to offend anyone - it's just difficult to follow a thread if it gets too long or "off topic" (I'm not saying your comments are off topic, just that the message boards sometimes get packed with off topic comments).

I'd just like to read Christal's official answer to George's question rather than having to read and filter out other comments that might not answer that question. Christal, being the official spokesperson, is probably the best one to answer that question.

Don :)

Hey Don,

I'm truly hoping that no offense was being forwarded to the five fine Leads and hopefully expect that the words used "I'm certainly capable of guessing as well as you are" were simply ill-presented.

As I mentioned earlier, and I believe most people agree, we always like to hear news directly from the horses mouth. (Ha, no offense meant there)

Sometimes we get it and that's great. Sometime's it's filtered through others and still can be substantial, meaningful and direct.

For those who may not know. Many of the Leads and perhaps all who voiced out earlier in this thread, did spend this last week-end in Brisbane picking up information about the new direction Epinions is going in. That said, they are not free to give all the information they learned. (Gotta keep competitors in the dark) That, to me means, we too will pick up limited information. That said, I too agree that direct information and communication is always the best.

Thanks,Don

Hotels/Travel

I've been poking around shopping.com, and I can't find any travel listings--will we be porting over our travel reviews to the new site?

Sorry if this has been asked!

Kris

Yes, I'd like to know the answer here, too.
