Problems with paste from word
I've run into a number of problems using this feature. First off while everything seems exactly the same when I paste it into the window, when it is actually in the review the formatting is lost. All the spacing between headings and paragraphs is lost and I have to look through my review and separate all the headings, subheadings and paragraphs.
Unfortunatly the past as plain text has this problem as well and I lose all my bold, italicized words, etc.
Is there a way around this other then pasting each paragraph individually or formatting your review after the paste? It's a pain as I have so many paragraphs I have to look through them and try and figure out where one ends and the next begins. Guess I should write shorter reviews? ;)
I've come across the following problem in my last two reviews as well:
The following field contains a word that is too long. Please shorten the word by adding spaces or spaces with a hyphen, or else please choose a shorter word.
In an attempt to isolate the problem, I entered my review by paragraph. Once I found the offending paragraph I isolated the offending sentence. Unfortunately I have already fixed the problem by just rewording the sentence. I wished I saved it so I could have posted it as well. I didn't have any odd or extremely long words however so I'm unsure as to what caused me to get this error.
Anyone else run into these or know of ways around them? |

RE: Problems with paste from word
Just to clarify - are you pasting directly into the review's input window, or are you using the "Paste From Word" button (the one that has a W on it)? I use the "Paste From Word" button, and don't have any of the issues you state. If you're using that button, and still have all those problems then I'd guess it's a some kind of operating system/browser/Word version incompatibility. You'll have to provide a few more details for us to figure out what's going on.

RE: Problems with paste from word
I'm using the paste from word feature by hitting the W. When I copy the review from word into the window that pops up everything looks as it should. However when when I hit insert to put it into the actual review the extra line between paragraphs disappears for some reason. Everything is smushed up a line so while the paragraphs are still technically on separate lines there isn't the one line space that I had intended to be there for readability purposes. I've tried it in both IE and Firefox and both experienced the same thing.
Last night I copied my review from the preview page and pasted it into the word document after I fixed the formatting and everything displays correctly now when I insert it into the review. I noticed that the text changed from Times New Roman 12 to Calibri 11 when I did this. I attempted to change my Tiger Woods review to Calibri 11 and see if the copy paste would appear correctly but still no luck. Then I just copied the review straight off the Epinions page for Tiger Woods and pasted it into Word. This fixed the formatting again when I went to insert into the review from word.
I took my original Woods review in Calibri 11 and kept comparing it to the exact same review pasted from the Epinions page that got it to display correctly. Using the undo and redo buttons I was able to ascertain that while the lettering and wording was exactly the same the one that displays correctly is slightly longer because the space between the paragraphs is larger. (its still just one line, the line is just thicker) I'm guessing that the space between paragraphs has to be of a certain length/thickness or something odd like that for it to register correctly? I'm using a default Microsoft Word 07 and I haven't changed anything.
Phew well that is enough trouble shooting for now. I'll have to mess around with my Word formatting at some point and figure out if you are able to change what is necessary to increase the distance between lines when hitting enter to go to another paragraph. If anyone knows where it might be it would be appreciated. Then maybe I can tell you what mine is and we can compare and see if that is actually the problem going on here. |

RE: Problems with paste from word
You've lost me, a bit. It's supposed to just paste right in, and work. I wonder if it's some weird setting you have, in your Word template. You could always try to use Wordpad or Notepad as a "middle man". Paste from Word to one of those other programs, then paste into Epinions. Might be worth a try. |

Hold it right there..!!
Why not just 'fix' the spacing problem right there..?? Just one small 'fix' in the site editor and ...done.
Or does that not work..?? Or am I missing something else..??

It is displaying correctly in the Paste from word popup if that is what you were referring to Tom. When I hit insert and it goes to the review body I lose the format. My last review and the one I'm currently working on aren't exactly lean and mean so its a pain in the butt to go through the whole thing and find where each paragraph, subheading, and heading is supposed to be spaced out. It doesn't take more than 5 minutes its just something that is annoying to do.
I'm not sure where I lost you but here is a visual example of what is going on.
So here is some random typing to give you an idea of what I am talking about. Epinions is a wonderful place. We review and rate. We are given some cool stats and those lucky enough obtain hats. My screen is large and I need more type to make it go to a second line. Hope this is now long enough to meet the qualifications. Okay I'm tired of typing lets see.
Many people enjoy it and on the 9th of this month Epinions celebrated it's 10th anniversary. Quite the accomplishment for a online venture. Congrats to Epinions and all those who support it. More random typing to show you. More spam to fill the lines go down down to the next line. Bleh I'm tired of typing lets see if this is now long enough to make this paragraph go to the second line.
If I pasted it from word this would happen:

Anywhere where there is supposed to be the line of space to indicate a new paragraph, section, or whatever is gone. For some reason I doubt I'm the only one who suffers from this although I haven't seen anyone else mention anything. I've seen a ton of new reviewers have their paragraphs formatted that way. |

I believe Tom's suggestion is to add one extra space below each paragraph while the text is in this popup window. It'll be easy because you can already see where the spaces are supposed to be. (As opposed to after the insertion where you lose the visual clue). Of course, it remains to be seen whether adding extra spaces in the popup will actually work to "fix" this problem or not. Or - will all of the spaces disappear (even the extra ones added directly into the popup)?

Ah gotcha, the extra spaces do work, although it now sees me as having both lines there. So there are the two lines between the paragraphs. So weird, anyway its much easier deleting the extra line then trying to find where to hit enter when there isn't one. So it is better than nothing.
Thanks for the help both of you

RE: Problems with paste from word
You're welcome - but the bottom line is, this is still a bug that will (hopefully) be officially addressed. But at least until then you have a fairly easy "patch".
