Have you ever bought a product simply to review it?

Recently, I picked up the game Scribblenauts more so to write a review about it (which I just did) than to play the game. Although, that's not to say that I didn't have an interest invested in the product as well.

But, seeing as my interest in Scribblenauts grew as time went on, I kind of felt like, "You know, this is the kind of item that I'd like to write about. Let's see where this goes."

If you happen to check out the review, I hope that you like it.

Yes I have: last Hot 500 sweepestakes, three products. One cheap, one middling-priced, and a third I was able to return because it did not work for me.

Also bought one product for the current Hot 1000 and still considering one more.

RE: Have you ever bought a product simply to review it?

I have not. I get very little IS for most my reviews so it wouldn't be cost effective. It may help my decision if I can get something cheap that I want plus write a review however. The thought of buying something simply to review it hasn't crossed my mind though.

I read your Scribblenauts review, it received alot of hype on IGN so I had heard a bit about it. Sounded like an intriguing concept but it didn't really appeal to me. I'm not sure on how long the game takes to beat would a rental have sufficed? That is probably a much more common practice (renting things to review) as that is a much cheaper alternative.

Edit: fixed some spelling :)

Re:

Nope, never bought anything just to review it...unless you count a Netflix subscription which exists just so I can review all the movies I watch with it :P.

I do all the time with movies. Sometimes, it is how I manage my Netflix queue. I try to watch a lot of indie stuff because you do find some gems, and a lot of them are not reviewed yet. It'll come in extra handy next month for the firsties contest.

Have you had any interest in these items, or did you just say... "When in need of a review, money is no object! Here's your $15,000,000, Mr. Sales Person!" ;)

For Scribblenauts, I think that a rental would suffice as it's a game without plot. In other words, you're being stumped by all assortments of challenges the entire time while not getting a story of any kind. It's a game that you could try for a bit and see if the game is up your alley.

On the other hand, I'm not one for renting video games. It's just not something that I do. The way that I score games and the way that I write about them tells readers of the value of just how fair they'll hold up to your purchase from my own perspective on the matter.

RE: Have you ever bought a product simply to review it?

I can't think of anything I bought just to review but I have bought many things to use knowing I would later review them. I guess I'm out past a dozen things now that I have been given so that I would write a review of them. A couple got rewarded with negative reviews. None of the things I got free would have been purchased by me, so maybe they count.

...smalllol... You are tripping my humor lever this evening...

At least your post drew out all the lurkers . . .that or all the football games and w/e chores are over.

Well, lets see: a cheap bar of soap (that I would use anyway), two bottles of liquor that I and the legal-age daughter enjoyed, a computer thing that I can definitely use, and the one I returned for no cost.

So no, no major investment in any products to review.

That is if I do not factor in the overdue fines I have paid over the years for overdue library books. Yes, I am terrible at keeping track of them.

RE: Have you ever bought a product simply to review it?

It would never occur to me to purchase something simply to review it. However I have read reviews of products that so impressed me I bought them with the knowledge that I would later review it.

I don't rent games either. Lately I've been buying most of mine off ebay though. For the most part all have been in excellent condition and I get them at a great value. I've never gotten into selling the games I no longer want to play on there though. I imagine most the time you will get much more in return then gamestop etc though. I'm more likely to get a game that I'm only semi interested in off ebay as I find deals that I can't pass up. MUST STEP AWAY FROM AUCTIONS....TOO MANY GAMES

No, I've never technically bought a golf club simply to review it--though I have horse-traded my way around since I am a true club ho'. This has produced many reviews over the years.

RE: Have you ever bought a product simply to review it?

I've checked out childrens books from the library to review (and let my daycare kids read them too). I don't really buy something just to review, although my hubby accuses me of it.

I have, though, bought beauty items because of positive reviews that I have read here, and I knew at the time that I would review them.

Yes, I do it all the time with pet food/treats and beauty items like foot scrubs, moisturizers, etc.

Yeah definitely. I mean I can't afford electronic items to review, but a lot of times, I might check out a popular book and read it (eg. - The Secret)or watch a popular movie or television series (eg. Hannah Montana) if I think it will help my hits or IS.

Sometimes it's sort of fun to step outside my interest zone

I don't know if I've ever bought something simply to review it. However, the fact that I could review it has led me to buy stuff I was trying to justify buying already.

The majority of my reviews are actually composed of items that were given to me for free, which many of them I wouldn't have bought to begin with (this includes games such as The Hulk: Ultimate Destruction). I wouldn't think that those reviews count.

That's good if you want to possibly save money (which eBay prices do go way over the official cost at times). Personally, I'd rather give credit to where credit's due: the developers, not Frank Penelli of Miami, Florida.
