Lost my hat, huge IS effect?

Okay, I lost my hat a few months ago, not sure why, but my IS is now 1/6 of what it used to be. Is that normal?

Just wonderin'

RE: Lost my hat, huge IS effect?

Yup. People usually report that their IS multiplies 4-6 times when they recieve their first TR hat. It seems you're seeing the same effect, in the other direction. Not as much fun that way. Perhaps you'll regain a hat, at some point, in which case your IS should jump back up.

Unfortunately, it is completely normal. A TR hat in *any* category usually multiplies your IS earnings like 5 times or so.

Thanks to both of you for the response. If I'd lost the hat in my picture, I wouldn't have minded. :-) I'll have to see if I can regain TR status.

RE: Lost my hat, huge IS effect?

Yes. It's rather a "mean" system. It discourages diversity and writing across categories. I could do a lot of book reviews, but unless I want to "hat" in that area, I kick myself in the teeth when I devote time to things outside a category where I "hat." Since I won't write on things I don't know well, it's a challenge to write enough in any given category to keep a title.

'Mean'. I like that descriptor...

Good point. I am often pressed to submit three-four reviews in a month. As I try to do a review a week in my TR-category . . .that does not leave a lot of time for other category reviews.

It has been proposed before that a 'Generalist TR' should be available. Should not be that difficult to implement.

But then . . .given the myriad of problems weighting the site down right now . . .perhaps it would be.

It will be interesting to see the 'hat structure' of the new edition of Epinions ... or whatever name it is branded with.

RE: Lost my hat, huge IS effect?

I'm going to be sad when it's no longer Epinions (however far away that might be). I like the name Epinions. It's so much more personable than the commercial "Shopping.com." Bleh.

And besides, it's going to make my sweatshirt, t-shirt, and apron defunct. T_T

There has been no such announcement.

Let's not start the rumors mills working overtime!

Agreed! That's why such thoughts need be questioned.

Perhaps it was just some kind of misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

I know I never heard any such statement and I also hold up, as an example against such a change, the recent use of @epinions to tweet and build on name recognition.

Indeed, I didn't intend to start rumors of any sort. I was thinking of the future of Epinions and because Shopping.com was taking up so much of TPTB time and how all our reviews are shifting over there, I thought that eventually (far, FAR into the future) Epinions was to go bye-bye and we'd all be integrated into the Shopping.com world.

That is what I meant to get across even though I have no proof or knowledge of this whatsoever. Just guessing.

Ditto Nicole's thought.

The only posts here that should be taken 'most seriously' are those of Christal and jump_chump. (And the occasional rare post by other Eps powers-that-be...)

The rest of us, including myself, are just plain chumps posting our own musings, crazy or not-so-crazy speculations, and 'wild hair' thoughts.

I think cookie-girl would agree with my thoughts...

stuffed his belly too. This was for my 60th birthday party when everyone was me at a different point in my life.

It was amazing!

My son, with the little extra effort, nailed me to a point where a few people (my mom and brother included) thought I came in and spoiled the surprise aspect of the party.

Not likely

It is not likely that I would get one eventually in that case. I write in any area that I feel could use my advice on a product. I don't think that I lean toward online reviews, games, kids and family, electronics or pets any more than the other. If I like some thing I write about it no matter where it would be. But yes with out a hat IS is very low lol. I hope that will change a bit now that I am back with more time on my hands to get in to writing again.

Not meaning to pick on you, Nichole, but I have seen this throught from others on the board, and I was thinking I had missed something.

We have been told that SdC is where they are testing and building the new platform for Epinions.

Our reviews have long migrated over to SdC. I know it's been happening since the time I joined the site in 2005. As far as I know, the profiles we have now are new, but the fact that our reviews are over there isn't.

And, they pull reviews "out of the grave" too. I deleted some, but they are on shopping.com and/or other sites. Hum. No editing outside the EP format. Be "sure" before you push that publish button.
