Warning about stolen/cribbed comments

I have recently noticed reviews with comments and links stating that the content was stolen or cribbed. When going to the provided links, I have not seen anything stolen or cribbed.

On these reviews it seemed that most raters just followed suit with NH ratings assuming that the links must be proof, but I would urge you to look at the links and judge for yourself before rating NH based on what someone else thought was cribbed or stolen.

If you still think the review is NH but for some other reason, it would be helpful to state your reason in the comments section.

Thanks

Becky

Good advice

Also look at google. Do a cut and paste from the review into google and see if it directly matches something. Remember every once in a while someone could be copying from themselves (ie a blog that they actually write or an old review site they use to contribute to....even under a different name....though this is rare and applies only to a handful of epinions folks... some of whom are advisors or TRs).

Definitely double check... accusations made in comments for yourself if possible. There have been people making false claims in the past...

Okay, I'm slow!

From the title, I thought maybe someone was plagiarizing the comments themselves. That would be a bizarre twist...

What? :)

(In all seriousness, I thought the same thing. The topic of this post is a great warning, however.)

RE: Okay, I'm slow!

It looks like Mark was stealing comments in his comment. See what you have started?

Report this to Community Care, including (a) link(s) to the review(s) if possible. One unproven accusation of plagiarism could be an accident; more than one coming from the same member is a pattern of abuse.

Assuming it is unproven. I usually go look and have never seen one that led to a link that wasn't plagiarism.

RE: Warning about stolen/cribbed comments

Another thing to watch out for is when the author updates their reviews. I've had cases where I've pointed out things in their review, they update it then accuse me in the comments section of not reading their review. So at one point the content could have matched what the link was pointing to.

The ones I observed were never updated.

RE: Warning about stolen/cribbed comments

I have seen some people who leave comments begin by copying and pasting the review into the comment so that the original content is preserved.

This happened to me. I spotted an exact lift of several paragraphs in a review by a well-known (at the time) Epinions member. I NH'd the review, and left a comment with the link to the plagiarized content.

The author updated the review making enough minor modifications so that the plagiarism was harder to spot. However, the structure of the copied text was still there. The author then left a comment along the lines of, "I don't think so, there's nothing copied here."

That particular author has not been active on Epinions since, as far as I've seen.

Yes I saw this happen as well so please everyone, take a minute to be sure the link provided in comments as proof of a stolen or cribbed review really is valid proof. You know what they say about assuming!

Copying the entire review has always seemed a bit of 'overkill' to me.

Certainly the point can be made, and documented, by copying some smaller section of the review to document the 'problematic' content. Perhaps the material that was 'googled' to find the 'problem' in the first place.
