It is probably before summers end in our house, less than a few years in the developed world, and we'll see about epinions.

They save money, reduce global warming, have no mercury, are nicer and better than fluorescent, they are cool/cold, no fire hazard, they last many years/decades without burning out, and they are getting popular.

Thomas

And they are also government mandated, so they are the only choice any of us will have for the forseeable future.

I like LED lights but I did not know they were government mandated. I am not sure what that means in this case but in general I don't like government mandates. I like bloodpudding, lutefisk (fish jellied in lye) and pickled and fermented herring but I wouldn't expect the government to force all of you to eat that.

RE: new category: Lighting

Basically, LED lights are (I think it's now the law) the only thing you are able to buy. Everything else is illegal to sell, although I think stores can still sell the stock they have.

And maybe this was a state by state thing, but I know it would be the case in California.

Personally, I like them, too. I've found they don't last as long as they claim they do, however. And you have to dispose of them carefully and not just throw them out in your regular trash like your old bulbs because they have some potentially very environmentally hazardous stuff in them.

Personally, I do like them and have used them for years. But I'm not a fan of the government saying they are the only option.

Are you talking about LED lights or fluorescent lights? Old fashioned incandescent lights are being regulated out of existence (with a couple exceptions), but both fluorescent and LED lights are sold in my region. Fluorescent lamps contain mercury, which it why they need to be recycled properly. As far as I know, there's nothing unusual about LED lights that require them to be recycled or treated in a special way.

It's possible that California has its own regulations, however.

I know that California law phases out incandescant bulbs, but I don't believe they're opting for LED only. I don't think Nevada has any bulb legislation because our apartment has those clear incandescant bulbs everywhere. Are LED bulbs much more expensive than fluorescant (in the short run)?

Any chance you'd try Gefilte fish? (and convince my kids it tastes great)

Gefilte fish is a picnic treat compared to some of the creations my Bubby and mother would create!

Exhibit A: B'char (jellied calves' legs)

Edited to correct punctuation

From it's light, you can see the gefilte fish.

Yes but B'char (B'chad?) is exquisite if it's prepared heavy on the garlic like my grandmother made it. (It's actually jellied calves feet. There's a Glatt Kosher Deli not far from me where I can still get it (when my wife & daughter are away). And, light from an LED passes through it!

My biggest problem with B'char is the vinegary odor I remember from childhood -- it triggered migraines. (This, of course, created halos around all lights -- LEDs weren't around in the late '50s.)

What I miss -- and don't have the patience to make anymore -- is kashavarnishkes! I'm hoping that someday I'll find it in the Atlantis' Manhattan Deli (or their buffet)!

I tried it and I think it is good. Better than Swedish fish buns.

Ah, the Gefiltes are running now on the Loxahatchee River down here. Imagine, Gefilte and Loxahatchee in the same sentence.

And you need excellent lighting to catch those sneaky Gefiltes when they swim upstream to mate with the Salmon for future croquettes. (Oy! That was a stretch!)
