RE: Microsoft Security Essentials Alert box
sandym347, if you use a PC, it's easy to do a screen shot. (It may be easy with a Mac as well, but I don't know the procedure.) Next time something pops up on the screen that you want to save, here's what you do:
1. Hold down the "Alt" key and at the same time, press the "PrtScn" key. That's called "doing an alt/print screen." That will store the image on the screen in the computer's memory. The PrtScn ("print screen") key is usually near the upper-right part of your keyboard.
2. Open an image processing program, such as Microsoft Paint that comes with Windows. (Yes, you have it on your computer if you have Windows.) Software such as Photoshop and Corel Draw also work fine for this.
3. Once the image processing software is open, hold down the "Ctrl" key and press the letter "V". That will "paste" the image into the image processing software's screen.
4. Once the image is there, save it. Be sure you can find where you save it, as Windows often defaults to odd locations for saving things.
Once you have the image saved, you can e-mail it like any other file.

RE: Microsoft Security Essentials Alert box
Thank you so much for the help. I hope that I never have to use it for catching pictures of virus alerts. I get nervous now, just logging in. My Granddaughter will have a fit if I mess up her computer with a something like a virus.

RE: Microsoft Security Essentials Alert box
I've been getting this “anti-virus virus” screen for the past two weeks. It only occurs when I'm logged-into my Epinions account – the latest incident 8/06/12 at 12:35 am EDT. So far, I've been able to avoid a meltdown by cutting power before the screen locks-up.
This same virus format has shut-me-down twice in the past couple of years when I used McAfee software. Now, my new-and-improved anti-virus account shows a clean bill-of-health, but the anticipation of when it will strike again currently extracts much of the fun from the Eps experience. This blasted infiltration makes it tough to fulfill my duties as an Advisor – if I'm only able to rate a half-dozen reviews before said virus tries to eat me. What are the odds that the team from NCIS could find and disable this thing before the first commercial break?
If non-members are having this same experience when they visit Epinions, how long before that news goes viral - and we have no traffic at all for our reviews? |

If This Is...
If this is really as troublesome for individuals this needs to be fixed asap. Document the links or urls that are bringing the alert. Forward it to the recommended individuals. Good luck!

RE: If This Is...
I had this come up today on my latest review after I published it I went to look at the review. I was able to close the popup box though without having to shutdown and restart. |

Damon,
My AT&T-provided McAfee started blocking ads on some Epinions pages (and even my AT&T home page!) since its last big update because it deemed them to be possibly dangerous (yes, noncommital language so they won't get sued by the advertiser in question). I wonder if I should make screen prints of Epinions pages with blocked ads. I wasn't on specific reviews, though. I was searching for a movie I wanted to review. If you think you can pull some information from a screen print, I'll be glad to send them to Mona.

Yes, that's the virus, but what we need to know is which ad is generating the URL request.
The only way to do this is to capture the network traffic on the computer (using Wireshark, for example),

RE: ..............
This same virus has hit me three times in the last two days on epinions :-( Alt F4 will kill the window and keep the virus from doing anything to the computer, but it is getting really annoying when I am doing my daily reading and prowling to have to restart the site so many times. How is the progress on this coming? |

We've contacted all five of our ad providers about this issue. None of them admit serving a bad ad. From what I can find from my own research, at least two of them have had this same problem before.
What we need is to find out which ad is serving the trojan. I might need to enlist Mona's help for this one.

Mona, I just e-mailed you a screen print showing that an ad was blocked for being suspicious. |

RE: ..............
Junk like this gets into ad feeds all the time. My mom called me today because she got a scareware pop up while playing games on Yahoo.
You know those "speed up my PC" commercials you see at night? Those are a big scam, too. Right now, there really aren't any laws against that sort of thing and so the problem is rampant. I work in IT and we have to remove a malware/adware/scareware app of some kind at least once a week. Some of them hide all your icons and reset directory permissions, too. Those are extra fun.
If you get a weird popup like that, hit ctl-alt-del and use task manager to manually kill the process for your browser (iexplore.exe, firefox.exe, etc) and then when you reopen, don't restore the session. NEVER EVER click on those pop up messages. |

That's how I handle them. Because of stuff like this and sudden resource grabs from "svc hosts," I keep my task manager in my system tray for easy double-click access. |

RE: Microsoft Security Essentials Alert box
Who do I send this picture of the virus message that I just received?
This time it was just the pop-up - the write-up that I was reading went to a white screen with no url in the top.
It was not a message from Essentials, it said some windows virus program that I do not have.

RE: Microsoft Security Essentials Alert box
You can send me the screen shot (address on my profile page). I will forward it to Damon.
Not having heard of this problem in a while (and not experiencing it myself) I was hoping it was solved!
Thanks,
Mona |

RE: Epinions Virus?
Just a grumble... spent the last couple of days cleaning various viruses--fake alert among them--off of my computer and two of Mr. Siduri's.
I've been avoiding the site until this was done. Hope the all clear is sounded soon. Brother, this was annoying.
Grumbling done, hope everyone is well and happy. |
