International claiming of IS

Yeah, so just today I figured I'd see about claiming the IS I've earned in my 2 years here.

Now, the thing that catches me about this, is the whole applying for the US tax-form thing I need to do before I claim. Can anyone tell me more about it? I mean, is it going to affect me in any way with regards to anything other than claiming my IS?

I realise I may be making a huge fuss over nothing, but is this gonna put me on some form of US Government list, and would it have an repercussions with regards to me travelling to the USA in the future?

Like I say, I'm probably overblowing what is a nothing, but I'm not keen on sending official forms off when I don't know much about what they entail.

I know captaind lives in England and he claimed, so if the good captain, any member of the staff, or generally anyone who knows, could maybe explain this a bit more, I'd be really greatful

No.

ITINs are purely for tax purposes, and will only have any sort of relevance with taxable income earned in the United States. It certainly won't have any sort of impact on traveling to the United States.

Firstly, good to know you've made enough to cash out! :-D

As Kenn said, it makes no difference to anything other than tax. (And Kenn, I really hope this menas you've finally managed to get yours sorted out!!) Technically, because you pay no tax because of the tax treaty between the two countries, you should declare it to the Inland Revenue (not a problem for me because I already do my own tax return). Shopping.com will send you a tax return at the end of the American tax year. As for exactly what you count it as on the UK tax return... I'm still trying to find that out.

Common questions about the blasted form you have to fill in:

What "Treaty Article Number" should I use?

It varies for different countries, but for the UK this is 12

What Exemption type do I put down - 1 or 2?

Tricky as the earnings from Epinions can come from different sources, i.e. Income Share and various bonuses, but after a lengthy discussion with a lady from the IRS the conclusion we came to was that it is Examption 2. Well, it worked for me.

How long does it take to get my ITIN?

About 2 months.

What supporting documentation can I use?

You can get bills etc notorised, or use a notorised copy of your passport. In my case I used my real passport, as if you do that you don't need any further supporting documentation. A self addressed envelope is a good idea though - the IRS aren't too good at addressing them! (How my ITIN got to me at all is a mystery, an error in every line of the address and no postcode, while my Passport never made it back at all until I enquired after months had passed and reminded them of my address!)

Er... well, that's it for now. I'd appreciate any further questions being posted here - not that I mind answering emails on the subject (I've certainly done so many times already!), but hopefuly this can become an information resource for anyone with the same question. Perhaps Doc can pin it?

Cheers,

CaptainD

Eh, this sounds rather complicated, I should probably leave this until Im less busy, still, cheers for telling me what I'm getting in for.

And on another note, what exactly is a notorised passport, and how do I get one?

Notarised passport...

... or notorised maybe?...

It's photocopies of your passport, signed by a public notary. Not sure what they are but they sound expensive, so I sent the real thing. Solicotors etc could do it I guess, just something to prove that the document is authentic, but it'll cost you if you do it that way.

It'll cost more to get your passport replaced if it gets lost in the mail though. I don't know about England, but here in the states a notory for a single signature is only going to cost $15-$20(US). And where I live I can get things notorized for free at any school since all the school secretaries have notary licenses.

RE: Notarised passport...

Lawyers are often notaries. Since I know a lawyer, I just took it to him and he signed the copy and attached a little blurb about his authenticity - free of charge. Even so, the IRS lost the copy of my passport and I'll have to resubmit it (once I get the other issues sorted out). Just make sure when you send in the forms that they are all stapled together and try to send as few pages as possible.

If you don't know of a notary, you could also just get a certified copy from your local passport office. I'm not sure how much it costs, but it'll probably only be about $10 at the most.

Love too... if we really had an option to move threads.

What the 'move' command does is copy it instead of moving it.

I'll do that though... I agree Help would be a good spot for it.

If you "un-pin" it here, does it also "un-pin" it from the help area as well?

RE: Notarised passport...

Yep. Just tested that.

All it's doing right now is duplicating each post to here and there. This has been a bit of an on going gripe with the mods. Can we get this to close to the top of the board wish list please?
