Comfort foods, from childhood ...

Jut curious about something ....

When you were a kid, and you were really sick, did your Mom (or Dad) make you any special foods or drinks, to help you feel better?

If so, do you have a special fondness for that food today? Also, were they foods that you only got when you were sick, or did you eat them when you were well, also?

Just curious if the "comfort foods" of our childhood have any special place in our adult food preferences.

RE: Comfort foods, from childhood ...

My mother's standard "sick" menu was a plate of toast with jam and a warm sprite or ginger ale. Bless her heart ~ somehow that always made us feel better.

Now, when my kids are sick, they get toast as well, but I don't make them drink warm soda :). Usually, it's herbal tea.

My other favorite was a large, round tin of pastilles, which were some kind of hard candy covered in powdered sugar. I used to hope for a sore throat so Mom would buy me pastilles!

Hope you're well, Diana!

Jennifer

PS Don't forget chicken soup ~ part of every Jewish mother's get well arsenal.

Orange sherbet ice cream. Whenever I couldn't hold down food and finally could again this is what I would eat. I still do this. Either that or a Strawberry Sundae from Dairy Queen.

Actual "sick" food; Apricot Nectar, very cold. Nothing is more soothing and sustaining for a cold with a sore throat that makes swallowing hard.

Real emotional comfort; Fig Preserves. Granny had a fig tree, and we would get up to beat the birds. When we had enough, she would put up a batch. Nothing takes me back to being a kid like the taste of figs and fig preserves.

Talyseon.

My sick comfort food was pastina - still is.

My mother traumatized me though. When I was little and would get sick, the doctor told her to get me to drink coke syrup. So she would go to the soda fountain and get a cup of the syrup. I would not drink it. She had to hold me down on the floor and try to force me to take it off the spoon. To this day, there's no way I will drink any colas.

Wow! Pastina was mine, too, and that's what got me thinking about this topic. My mother would make me pastina and would let a dollop of cream cheese melt on top. (We're not Italian, so I don't even know where she learned about pastina).

Anyway, I was eating some quinoa this week (Yay! A grain that's ok for Passover!) and found myself putting a little cream cheese on it, and enjoying that, and thinking that it was like pastina for grownups.

Interesting to hear about the other foods people ate. I've heard of sherbet, toast, unrefrigerated soda and coke syrup for soothing sick kiddies. Apricot nectar is new to me, and figs were definitely not a part of my childhood experience!

Thanks!

Mine too. My mom would add a bit of milk to it... I haven't had it in years.

Baked potato with butter and sour cream. Love it still.

Also, bananas and sour cream with lots of sugar on top.

Hi Rudi,

Yikes! Did you HAVE to say ..... POTATO? You know that word always brings that evil SpudLovin' Troublemaker to the Boards!

Wondering if my kids might like sour cream with bananas. Hmmm....

By the way, this thread is dangerous to my diet. Guess what I just made and ate for dinner tonight? Yes, pastina. Topped with salt, margarine AND cream cheese. First time eating it in about 15 years! (the whole family enjoyed it, though)

My "sick food" was cherry jello with Cool Whip. But, now as an adult I can't eat it because I associate it with being ill. :(

So, do you eat lime Jello, instead?

Ewwwww...no way! Eating anything lime would make me need cherry jello with Cool Whip. :)

Now I eat hot apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Actually, knowing what Jello is made from, I stay away from it, no matter the color.

Hiya,
I'm not sure why, but my mom (who is an MD) had this wacky idea that banana puree was the panacea of all childhood illnesses. It was totally disgusting. :oP It might have warded off many bouts of muscle cramps I could have had, but to this day I really dislike banana (except for the really tiny and sweet variety that grows in northeast Thailand, I think).

Cheerio,
No-Banana-Allowed Smorg :o)

RE: Banana puree made me banana

Hi Smorgy,
I'm sure your Mom had many wonderful traits, but I'm afraid that banana puree does indeed sound awful.

I didn't like bananas when I was a child, but I like them now.

RE: Banana puree made me banana

Uggh.. Smorgie, I'm joining your banana-hating club. Question: What's worse than banana puree? Answer: A brother who smushes it in your face...

Although, I have heard that putting a banana peel on your forehead will soothe a migraine in no time. Have I tried this? No, for I will never get that close to my culinary nemesis!

*evil laugh*
