JVC (GR-D72U) D igital Camera TROUBLE

Last year I purchased a JVC (model: GR-D72U) digital video camera...I mainly got it so I could edit what I filmed on my computer (which is a Sony 2003). The problem is, is that I CANNOT get the "filmage" (whatever you call the moving recorded part) on the computer! I can download the pictures I take with it (which are stored on the memory stick) to the computer, but not the filmage. When I set the camera to the setting of downloading the filmage part, the computer says that there was an error in the connection, and I cannot access my camera on the computer (as in besides the error notice the computer won't acknowledge it). I've tried using different USB cords, but that doesn't work either. I have loaded my camera's software, and everything. But it just won't work. Is there something wrong with my camera, or am I missing something?

RE: JVC (GR-D72U) D igital Camera TROUBLE

What software are you using to capture usb video? Have you tried to transfer the DV files directly to your PC using a firewire (ilink) connection?

RE: what are firewires?

Firewire is a type of communication port on a PC, sorta like USB, serial, etc. Its your best option for transferring digital video from a minidv camcorder to a PC.

It might be called ieee 1394 or ilink in your manual.

With a firewire port you can "transfer" digital video from dv tape to your hard drive. Takes hundreds of megabytes of space or more, though.

Not familiar with your camcorder, but With USB, I think you are "capturing" the video and audio, rather than transferring it, which is more difficult for your PC to handle. At any rate, I've found the software you are using can be a factor. Do you have any other video capture software you can try?

RE: what are firewires?

another really cool thing about firewire is that it is 2 way connection

RE: what are firewires?

How do I transfer instead of capture? And what's the difference? (I'm sorry...I guess I know even less than I thought)

And I'm going to try using a firewire...thank you for the help on that!

re: what is a firewire?

By software, do you mean the program I use to edit the video?

If so, I have few different ones besides the one that came with my camera.

Does your PC have a firewire port?

What software are you using to transfer the video from your camcorder to your PC?

How you do it depends mostly on the software you are using.

Transferring DV files from mini DV tape to your PC means you save a copy the video on your hard disk as a dv avi file, I believe at 720 X 480 resolution, and using about 200mb of space per minute of video.

When you capture, you can tell the software to capture at different resolutions and frame rates (fps), and most software will "compress" or encode the video as you capture it, to save space.

If you have a software program I am familiar with, I might be able to walk you through the process, but if you look through the helpfiles in the software it might help.

When you say the computer says that there was an error in the connection , can you be more specific? A program you are using pops up a dialog that says this, or .....?

re: what are firewires?

Yes, my PC has a firewire port.

I have tried using several different softwares to transfer the videos...the one my camera came with, two that are on my computer (Windows Movie Maker and Movie Shaker) and also I have gone to things like My Computer to look for it(but each of those do not even acknowledge that there is a video cam hooked up).

A little word bubble thing pops up on the bottom right of the screen (from the taskbar)and reports the error.

JVC problem

All you have to do is buy a firewire, and then it works fine. (here's a picture of one: http://www.poirrier.be/cours/struct-ordi/ports/firewire-2-connecteurs.jpg) Some of them are two way, meaning that the plug on both ends is the same. But the one I got is not two way, and I had to plug it into the back of my computer, but it works great. They shouldn't cost very much money, and they probably will come in handy for more than just your camera.

Hope that helps! (-=

to transfer from GR D72U to PC

I've looked all over the net and tried all the solutions, spent many many hours messing around wtih this problem. The only solution I found, and easiest, was to buy a $18 firewire card that has the TI chipset. The TI chipset is a must - my old firewire card that came with my new DELL didn't have a TI chipset. I put the new card in and immediately was able to see the video in Windows Movie Maker and in Sonic.

I was able, using Sonic, to get the video from camera to show sometimes, by putting the camera in record mode, which shows video ok, then switching to play mode. But that didn't always work, and never worked with WMMaker.

JVC camera connection problem

I have recently bought the JVC GR-D370 video camera which worked fine until I tried to connect it to my PC. The computer dose not recognize it at all. I do have a firewire connection on my PC and have used three separate video cameras through it before and there has never been a problem.
After speaking to someone at JVC help line they suggested it was probably a missing firewire driver and suggested trying the same camera through another computer. I tried this through my brothers Mac firewire import which doesn’t recognize it either.
Are there any drivers I can download for my PC to help it recognize the camera or is it just a faulty camera? Any help you could offer would be much appreciated.

Thanks

TI Firewire Cards Available

All,

If anyone is needing a TI chipset firewire card to get
their JVC camcorder working, I have a few extra cards
that I could let go for CHEAP.

Email jcjodoin (at) yahoo.com and let me know.

BTW, the TI chipset definitely fixed the issue with
connection under windows XP with my JVC.

Works like a champ now.

FYI.
