Reviewing Virtual Console Games

I was just wondering if it's acceptable to, say, review virtual console games in their original listing here at epinions.

For example, I want to review Kirby's Adventure, a game that I've played through the Virtual Console, so would it be alright to review it under the listing for the NES game?

Thanks.

RE: Reviewing Virtual Console Games

I would think so. After all, it IS a NES game you're playing, not a Wii game (even though it is played on the Wii). It's the same exact game as you'd play many years ago in basically its original form, aside from the controller being different. The only thing you'd probably need to do is find out how the game's controller worked back then, and maybe make a comparison of some kind explaining the difference between the controllers.

I talked with Garrett and Rick about this a while ago and we all feel that our preference is to reuse the original product listing when possible. If it isn't there, we'll add the virtual console listing in the appropriate console section (Xbox 360, Wii, or PS3).

The only caveat is since I cannot add products for any of these consoles, I might add the classic console game listing instead of people are anxious to submit their review.

!!!

The thing about this is though...I've heard horror stories about the emulation of certain games on the VC (Gunstar Heroes in particular) this could end up misleading people.

RE: !!!

Agreed. For example, Mario Kart 64 (Original on the N64), you are able to save "Ghost Data", but on Mario Kart 64 (Wii-Emulated version), you can not do this. The following is just a suggestion of mine, If you not reviewing the original format version, you should have to note this in either the title, or somewhere in the review. That way, you could avoid confusion, and still use the original product listings. However, this only a suggestion...

It probably wouldn't hurt to mention the console (Wii, Xbox, etc.) that it was played on, especially in the title of the review as well as the body. That'll help it get picked up better by search engines.

That's fine. If I have to add any games, I'll try to make sure the correct keywords are in there. Also, I can add anything and everything in Games. So feel free to pummel me with SAP requests.

So slight change of direction here. Since there's been some turnover in the Epinions staff, I thought I should revisit this again. According to Almar (from asking the engineers) from now on downloaded games should probably have their own listing. Even if they end up being completely identical to the original versions on physical media, it isn't necessarily evident.

So for instance if you downloaded Castlevania Symphony of the Night on Xbox Live Arcade, it should belong in its own listing not the PS1 listing. If you don't see a listing for it, feel free to pummel Jeremy or me with SAP requests via email.

Thanks!

RE: Reviewing Virtual Console Games

99% of the virtual console games play like they do on there respective system. There are a few that are diffrent though take for example Mario Kart you can't save ghost data on the VC version, but other games like wrecking crew allow save data that the orginal diden't.

RE: Reviewing Virtual Console Games

As a related question, I'm taking it that playing a GameCube game on the WII should be reviewed under GameCube? As far as I know it would be completely identical as the WII hardware is basically a spruced-up GameCube?

Sorry if this has been asked before, I don't remember seeing it!

RE: Reviewing Virtual Console Games

Yes because the game content is still the same. However, it would definitely be useful to provide some information as to how it plays on a Wii.
