No more online for Gran Turismo 4!

Some shocking news about Gran Turismo 4 is that the game will no longer feature any kind of online functionality. That luxury's being saved for another Gran Turismo game scheduled to release sometime next year. Here's further insight on the story: http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/media/relatedmedia.asp?pf_id=236416&element_id=B0000263

You think that affects their sales at all?

RE: No more online for Gran Turismo 4!

I would say there'd be some kind of chance of that happening, but I couldn't really tell for sure how major. I figure those who have been looking forward to Gran Turismo 4 already (which were in the millions I'd say) will be disappointed, however will no doubt shell out their extra bucks for another online version the minute it hits the store. The only thing is, I don't know what kind of online package this is -- whether it's a whole new game, or maybe some kind of $20-$30 online expansion disk.

I'd just say it gives more ammo for the Xbox fanboys against the PS2 fanboys. It's still a good game, and there's really nothing like it for PS2 owners.

That's "their" war, not ours. We don't want to start any kind of console combat in here, so please keep all irrelevant remarks to yourself, kjell.

It's surprising to me, since I only first heard about the news from the new December issue of PSM. The news was first announced at last month's Tokyo Game Show, however.

My focus wasn't so much on console fanboyism, but rather out of respect for the game itself. GT is a great series has been known for it's realism and huge diversity of cars and tracks. Having it online shouldn't really matter for PS2 owners. Yes it's disappointing, but it apparently isn't ready yet. Some game series have suffered because their online transition was horribly thought out. There still is tons to do in the game, and if they include some AI scripts to simulate more unpredictable and/or aggressive drivers, then it might help people forget about its lack of online functionality.

My whole point about the fanboy thing is mainly to trivialize them as petty in an off hand example.

I see your point, kjell. However, sparking some kind of unruly debate over what system's games have what in them could lead to an unwanted royal rumble between those "fanboys." I'm just trying to keep the peace here.

I dunno.... could be interesting. As long as they didn't make it personal and nasty.

Heated debate is ok and sometimes very informative as long as the parties stick to the rules.

I don't know about that. These types of things usually seem to get out of hand.

Not necessarily. It's all perceptual. What you find out of hand may be a long way from when I would find it out of hand, or even vice versa at times.

I tend to let things go until name calling begins... serious name calling, not just like 'oh dude you suck.' Then we always have the ability to lock her on up.

Just my personal take on things like that, but I tend to want to give benefit of the doubt and see where it leads. Most of the time the conversation can be gently edged back on track without either of us having to drop the boom.

I'm just all about the fun, man.

*major grin*

It's not just the name calling I'm worried about, but the bias too. System wars get pretty brutal when people mix their "facts" up with "opinion," and so on and so forth.

If this is a site who's purpose is to help people make buying decisions, don't you think that there should be an open discourse debating the differences in games for the major consoles? I know the nature of the beast here, but I'm in agreement with Doc on this one. You guys have the ability to lock this guy up if it gets out of hand. I think you have a pretty strong population of reviewers here who are mature enough to understand the facts and rebuke the fanboys even if they are on the same side of an arguement.

The way I see it is the purpose of a message board is to assume people act civil. When they don't, mods should step in. And this just isn't limited to console warfare. Take ESPN NFL Football versus Madden NFL. I remember when 32_Footsteps wrote a scathing review of Final Fantasy VII and caused his own localized flamewar in the comments section.

Admitted my original post wasn't written as well as it should have, but what if I had said something to the effect of, "Well, GT4 isn't online, but at least Xbox owners can play Project Gotham Racing online. As long as I have PGR, I can wait for GT5." Would that have crossed the line?

I guess you're right. I'll try to be more open-ended like Grand Theft Auto. Ah CJ, what would my life be like if I hadn't met you? ;)
