What happened to Interplay?

I finally got me a copy of the game Kingpin and had to download a patch for it. When I went to Interplay's site, it looked like something a high school kid had thrown together. Did they go out of business or something? I can't think of any new releases from them in a while.

RE: What happened to Interplay?

Interplay was purchased by Titus. Titus went out of business a year or two ago, I believe.

Titus bought a controlling interest of 62% of the shares. I'm not sure if this qualifies as "buying" the company since they still file their own SEC reports. They filed for bankruptcy due to not being able to play their payroll.

Basically what CK said. Don't expect much from them going forward,

Interplay?

Didn't Interplay make Gex? That was a pretty cool game.

62% is still more than half of the company's ownership percentile. That's a major controlling share.

Nope, the Gex games were made by Crystal Dynamics, who in turn are owned by Eidos Interactive. Eidos is another publisher that's in trouble these days.

That's a bit different than being purchased, but that's semantic. Having controlling share in a company would allow the shareholder to make any decisions they want to and are able to as a shareholder (basically a sole entity on the board of trustees making all of the decisions). Purchasing inlcudes taking on all of the company's assets and debts (among other things), which is not usually the case in a stock "buyout". A purchase of a controlling share of stock being called a "buyout" adds to the confusion.

In terms of who owns who, it's all the same though.

Okay, well I guess IGN is wrong then. This is the page where I got the details from:

RE: What happened to Interplay?

Wouldn't be the first time IGN was wrong (how's that saying go? You can't spell IGNorant without...) but it all depends on what they mean by "purchased by". Liek I said, it's semantic, and often the results of the two acquisitions are the same. The main difference is that when a company is actually "purchased" it's usuallythe result of it being put up for sale, while it can be "bought out" (by purchasing 51% of the company's stock) against the company's will.

Kind of like with Electronic Arts picking up 10% of Ubisoft's stock.

My source is a little more trustworthy, in theory:

Crystal was also behind the Legacy of Kain games. Now they're the replacement developers behind the newest Tomb Raider that will be out soon, Tomb Raider: Legend. I'm definitely looking forward to that game.

I only played Tomb Raider I through III; I actually owned it until it was stolen (which sucks), but they were fun while they lasted.

First, you need a vault. Second, you should try Tomb Raider: Revolution. That one has to be my favorite in the series.

Indeed I will on both accounts. Thanks for the advice. I mean a hundred dollar vault is much cheaper than the $3,000+ dollars I busted my a$$ for to rebuy newer games...

RE: Interplay?

But then again... I'll still have to rebuy the games I loved. Which, thank god, are not as many; but still, its the principle of the matter and it just plain sux.

I've repurchased games myself a bunch of times before. Only...none of them were stolen. Although, I did lose some games due to unfortunate circumstances. Gran Turismo 3, for example, I lent to someone I knew once. I never got it back. So yeah, it really shouldn't be that you have to buy the games again. But, if you have lots of money to do it with (or with some old games or systems you'd want to trade in toward the purchase), then that should help ease the transition in some kind of warped perspective.

A lot of money, I do not have... I am on the lower-classed tiers of society (a.k.a. mininum wage). So, yeah the collection took me years build. I have learned a few lessons from this. A. only buy one game a month. B. Don't trust anyone. C. as you said, buy a safe and I'll keep that baby locked.

I looked up Tomb Raider games earlier this morning and I have not found a "Tomb Raider: Revolution" on any websites. Did you mean "Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation"? I wanted to see what the game looked like.
