Sound insulation for home

Hello,
I live in a house that is split in 2 different apartment. I am trying to find out what is the best way to reduce the noise between the rooms. I heard about different techniques like foam or fiberglass...Any suggestions on something reliable? Thank you

The best things to reduce sound transmission from room to room are to do the following:

1. Add mass to walls and ceilings
2. Seal cracks around doors, electrical outlets and other openings.
3. Beef up the doors

The sound you hear through the wall is the wall vibrating due to sound on the other side. If you make the wall heavier, it will be harder for the sound on the other side to cause the wall to vibrate. The classic way to do this is to install another layer of sheetrock on your side of the wall.

Before you do that, check to see if the sound is leaking around electrical outlets and light switches. Just hold your ear by each outlet and switch and listen for the sound. If it's coming from the outlet/switch, get weatherstripping from a hardware store -- Lowes and Home Depot have it, for example.

Also, make sure your doors close tightly. Listen around the doors for sound leaks and install weatherstripping if they do leak sound. With your doors and outlets properly sealed, the next step is to add mass to the walls. And the best way to do that is to install more sheetrock. It ain't easy, but that's what works.

Good luck!

RE : Sound insulation for home

there are a number of soundproofing or noise-reducing initiatives you can take. The most effective of these are best done during a building or remodeling project because they involve the way walls or other structural elements are built. But others are relatively easy fixes you can do next weekend.
