Lacquer finish on furniture cloudy; haze problem

Calling all woodworkers or finish experts!

I recently had a large wall unit custom built and finished for me. The finish is dye-based stain with lacquer finish.

On the drawers, I think the finisher put too much lacquer on top. Especially when the sun shines on the furniture, the drawers look almost milky white. No matter what product I use on the furniture, this cloudy, uneven finish looks terrible.

I'm having a hard time getting the cabinet maker to fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to fix this problem with the lacquer? My husband is pretty handy with wood; he could probably do a light sanding and re-coating with lacquer if that would help, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

Thanks for any ideas!

Jennifer
