GE refrigerator (lemon?)

3 years ago my very elderly mom bought a GE 22 c/f refrigerator, and from time to time noticed water on the floor. Though she emptied the food out, and tried to determine where it was coming from, sh could never find the problem. Recently, when she was discharged from the hospital, the refrigerator was "out" (food ruined and a BIG mess) so she called the repair people. They found that it was the defroster...was a CONTINUING problem with that model...GE is, and has been VERY well aware of the problem for some time, but made no effort to notify customers! They will not stand behind it even though they admit it is a problem with that model! She had to pay over $150 PLUS loss of all the food, and GE will not help. Does anyone know what course of action to take? Thanks for any suggestions...

RE: GE Refrigerator (Lemon)?

You are hardly alone with your GE refrigerator problems. As the previous poster suggested, go to http://www.bringgoodthingstolife.org where you will find information about the Class Action Lawsuit brought against GE for defective refrigerators. Although the lawsuit was filed in Florida, it is a national Class Action Lawsuit and anyone who owns one of the defective refrigerators is included.

The lawsuit was filed in April 2005, but GE decided to settle last week after the Florida Attorney General intervened at the request of the website owners. On the Home Page, you can download:

- the list of 300+ models included in the settlement
- the Settlement Agreement
- an overview of the settlement process, etc.

If you need more information, contact the editor of the website on the Contact page. Good luck!

Hotpoint too

I bought a new HotPoint fridge from Home Depot. Besides the first 2 coming late and damaged, I now have a unit that has constant frost in the freezer sction, the thermostat seems to be none responding at times, freezing my milk and other liquids in the fridge, LOUD strange sounds during operation and a 2 handed tug of war to open the door after a recent closing. Customer service scheduling was a nightmare and 3 techs came to my home under warranty to tell me all these issues are considered acceptable, nothing done!

RE: GE refrigerator (lemon?)

There is a class action lawsuit involving G.E.and various models. You can call 1-866-839-4463 and a message will direct you to the proper channels to see if your model was prt of this suit. You must act soon if you are interested.

RE: GE refrigerator (lemon?)

Lots of luck to anyone who buys GE appliances! My husband and I purchased one of the GE refrigerators involved in the class action law suit involving moisture problems with there side-by-sides. We have had a service contract since purchase. It has required several major repairs a year and the ice maker has never worked properly. On June 9, 2007 it once again wasn't working at all. After much difficulty attempting to schedule a service call we learned of the class action law suit. We were never informed in writing by GE. According to my understanding of the law suit, customers were supposed to be informed in writing. We were not, and it shouldn't have been too hard to find us since they're answering our service calls many times a year. Also, according to my understanding of the suit we have up to 1 year after a service contract ends to make a claim; however the number at GE for claims is no longer in service and a GE representative told us that the deadline for making a claim was Jan. 2007. The irony, we have a 17+ year old Kenmore refrigerator in our basement which we moved from Missouri to Wisconsin, which has never required service.

Defective/Leaking G.E. Hotpoint Refrigerator

My refrigerator leaked from the top on the interior, by the temperature control, ever since I bought it in 7/04. After paying roughly $325 for a new thermostat and five service calls, G.E. gave me a replacement refrigerator in roughly 2/05. The new, "improved" model had the exact same problem, but I was tired of taking time off of work for service calls and I gave up. However, I recently moved and naively hoped that the change of apartment would improve the refrigerator's leakage. I was wrong and started to research. Thus, I have arrived at your website. I see that G.E. already settled a class action lawsuit and all deadlines to register have passed. Is there anything that I can do to recoup my losses and get a functional refrigerator at this point? Please advise. Thanks.

imposters

I purchased the side by side fridge 3 yrs ago. I to am having the same leakage all over the floor. I've had it serviced many times I'm so tired I just put a towel on the floor nightly. So much for the Maytag name they would'nt even replace it for me even after having serviced a month after purchase. It has been a nightmare!!!!!!!

Hotpoint GE should be ashamed!

I am too a victim. I bought a complete set of appliances at Home Depot. After 3 delivery attempts I finally got a fridge that was not dented in shipping. After a few days I noticed frost build up in the freezer. I also discovered the lack of temp control in the frideg with my liquids randomly freezing, even now with the thermostat set on 2!

I contacted GE and GE sent 2 techs to look at things. Of course they said all was normal. Well after warranty ran out my freezer fan was sqealing and slowing down to almost stopped at times. I paid to have it changed ($223) out of my own pocket. The tech who did the work told me they all have these issues. A class action suit in Florida adressed this but my serial num,ber is not included?

Again my fan is sqealing and slowing down. I called GE to see if they would do anything for me. Of course not, they only have record of one tech visit under warranty and his report was "customer was instructed on how to use product, product was fine". Now with the internet I know better. Another sad example of crappy business in the USA. I hope they start up another lawsuit and I get a shot at them. I now make sure I always research eveything on the internet before purchase and stay away from GE and any of it's other names it hides behind.

THERE IS A SECOND GE LAWSUIT

There is a 2nd GE refrigerator lawsuit. It is not the same exact problem, it looks to try to cover all problems for units built 2001 and later. Not sure, I am not a lawyer. Check it out.

http://www.weinsteinlawfirm.com/newdocs/1Complaint.pdf

My fridge was registered with the card GE had with all the paperwork you get when you buy a new appliance of any type. I also had it repaired for $315.00 when it was about 2 years old. The second breakdown, I got suspicious and went online to check things out. I had a repairmen free labor & materials from GE, I filled out all the paperwork, got money back for the first repair, & a year extended warranty. I lost food & time from work for the third time and the fourth time was THE DAY BEFORE the extended warranty expired. I have a new GE that I am very skeptical will run correctly much longer. I keep a CLOSE eye on this appliance. And I keep watching for more lawsuits. I believe GE did NOT try to contact people who they knew had defective refrigerators. I KNOW THEY DID NOT. The refrigerator was purchased & registered solely in my husband's name. Repaired in my name. When the call center person was talking to me after I found the settlement online, she pulled up my repair and called me by my name. I know I did not give her my name. That tells me, they knew we had the moisture related problem repaired.

Keep after GE

Okay same problem here with my side by side - today marks the 4th repair - 2 repairs were done prior to our knowledge of the Class Action Law Suit (which they will not own up to as moisture related). Keep after the good people at GE, today I was offered new doors for my fridge or $500 toward the purchase of a new GE product. Thought I would go with new fridge only to find out that I had to purchase it from GE. Their price was $300-400 higher than buying it from a store - tell me what am I really gaining? I went ahead and ordered the doors, going to let them repair it once again, then letting it break down again (I know it will!) and buying a different brand.

Too late for lawsuit

I too have a GE refrigerator that was included in the lawsuit. GE never notified me. My fridge was repaired 3 times when it was still under warranty. I was offered the same deal of new doors or $500 off new fridge. What a joke. The prices are inflated. My new doors arrived and they are bisque. My fridge is almond. GE says most of their customers are happy with the bisque. Hmmm... I guess they are if their fridge is bisque. So they want me to be happy with an appliance that has sides that are a different color from the doors and handles that are also a different color. Plus the drip tray and paddle and also the control panel will be the wrong color. GE did say they were trying to be fair. Somehow I'm not convinced.

RE: GE refrigerator (lemon?)

We ordered a GE refrigerator, side by side doors and no ice maker. When it was delivered it was the wrong model. It had an ice maker and water dispenser in the door. I told the delivery man that it was the wrong refrigerator, he said no it's the right one and it says it right on the paperwork. I now believe that the department store we bought it from knew it was under a class action suit and used us to get rid of the ones they had in stock knowing that. They said we could keep it for the price of the one we ordered for delivering the wrong one. So we said yes. The ice maker never worked right from day one, it broke down soon after we got it. There was mold growing in the ice and water dispenser and the arm didn't stop the ice from over flowing. The GE repair man came out and replaced the doors. They must have given us doors from someones old refrigerator because the door handle and molding was dis-colored which stands out and is very unattractive. We do not have money to buy a new one which is very frustrating.

Hotpoint refrigerator

I purchased a GE Hotpoint side by side refrigerator right at 4 years ago. I have had all of the problems that have been talked about by others on this site. My freezer actually started going out a couple of weeks ago. Now my refrigerator has gone out. I had a man to come and look at it yesterday and he said the compressor had gone out. I can't find my warranty information because we were building the house when we bought the unit. I know I have it here I just have to find it. I just wanted to know what I can do. Can I still join a lawsuit, can I get it fixed by GE I don't have any phone numbers to call to get it fixed. Can someone help me with this problem. I don't have the money to buy a new one at this time. We are actually sitting milk and other food out on our porch to keep it cool. If it gets warm we are out of luck. Please help!

GE Fridge nightmare.

Hi!
Bought a suite of GE Appliances at Home Depot (thru their online sales deptartment) recently. They were delivered on October 18th, 2007. Within a day or two I could sense something wasn't right in the fridge/freezer. There was moisture and condensation in the freezer, then hours later, frozen beads of water all over the inside. The fridge portion was barely keeping things cold. As instructed in my paperwork, I called GE Service and was told that I needed to make sure nothing was blocking the vents in the freezer, and to "crank up the controls to at least 7 and see if that helps". Well.. it didn't help. I started to notice the ice cream was freezing and refreezing, and you could make indentations in food that was supposed to be frozen.

I called again, and let them know that this was unacceptable for a new appliance to be not working properly. They sent out a scary repairman, and he couldn't figure out what it could be, so he ordered two parts: a thermostat and some type of defrosting part. A service call was set to install them 2 weeks later. In the meantime, I called Home Depot online and was told that because I ordered it thru their website I only had 48 hours to exchange it, and apparently I should have been clairvoyant and known that it wasn't working properly within 48 hours. I went back and forth with the woman on the line and she said she'd have a supervisor call me back. I called the local store from which they were delivered, and they gave me the story that since it was online, they couldn't do anything. But perhaps they could talk the online department into replacing it. The online people said that they would see if they could get the STORE to replace it.

So, another repairperson came out on Friday. He replaced those parts. He was apparently on his first week of work with GE, as I heard him on the phone with another tech. His background is in industrial refrigeration, not home appliances. Nice fellow, but he told me that I had to keep the freezer at 8 in order to have ice cream that will not melt, and that the fridge could go back to 5 now.

Okay.. the next day. Ice cream was soft again, and the milk this morning was just above lukewarm. I went into the freezer and found pancakes I'd "frozen" and they were soft enough to make easy indentations in them, and corn dogs in the freezer were so unfrozen that I could basically tear the breading off of them. So, another $50.00 or so worth of food I have to throw away.

So I called the assistant manager at the HD store, as she requested, and I told her what was going on. That the repairs didn't work. She told me that they had to give GE three calls (in good faith as she put it) before they'd declare the darn thing a "lemon". I let her know that I'd contacted the Seattle tv station consumer reporter already, and was hoping to avoid having to call her District Manager next, or perhaps picket their store' . She told me she would call GE on Monday and schedule ANOTHER call, and talk to them.

I also left a message for the online supervisor who asked that I let her know if the repair worked. My frustration is that this should have worked right out of the box. ANd if not, they need to replace it. WHo want's to spend $900.00 on a fridge only to have it become a frankenstien unit with parts replaced at random until it works? I swear that I will be victorious in this issue, and will have a new fridge soon. Any other ideas for me to pursue?

GE side by replaced within 6 months of purchase

The first(2000 model) was replaced because of moisture buildup in the freezer compartment and noises coming from freezer fan. The appliance store did not like this and said I should go directly thru GE, I said I purchased it from you and you should go back to GE. Which they finally agreed to replace. But the second model which supposedly is an 2001 model, performs the same noises just not as much as the first. The ice chute door would not close, so consequently it started frosting everything up inside. So the silenoid assembly had to be replaced. It was all rusted, and would not function. Now there is frost all over the cooling coils in the freezer compartment and it has quite cooling. So the repairman replaced the control board stating that the unit was not defrosting. $300 later it is doing the same thing. The water tank is all froze up will not dispense water. The cooling coils are frozen up and the inside temp in the refrigerating side is 60 degrees. What can I do, but keep spending more money on this piece of American engineering. Model #gss25jemcww

AVOID GE REFRIGERATORS

I am the UNproud owner of a GE TFX26ZPDA(A) side by side. I always purchased Whirlpool products and never had any trouble. However, when my father wanted a new refrigerator i told him to buy Whirlpool and the salesman was evidently more persuasive than I. The refrigerator is now about 6 years old and i have been having problems with it for well over 2 years. Water collects on the bottom of the freezer and freezes solid and gets thicker by the day. At some point some of it thaws and then floods the floor under the unit as well as around it. I have had the local appliance contract company come out and all they seem to do it thaw out the ice and then leave. Today i decided to call GE and ask for suggestions. I was able to be connected with someone in what they call the 'executive offices', yes i do have this persons name, initials are BB, in case i am not allowed to print his real name here. I explained the problem in the hopes that they would put me on with a tech who would possibly guide me in the right direction. All i got was a totally rude, sarcastic response to my query and he then told me he had no intention of sending anyone to my home. I thought that was interesting since i had not even asked him to send anyone. I would never purchase anything manufactured by GE in large appliances again and suggest that others do the same.

RE: GE refrigerator (lemon?)

Aside from the problems mentioned here...GE continues to shamelessly trade with Iran. Shame on them. A hundred years ago that would be considered seditious.
