San Diego Late March

We have to travel to San Diego in late March. Reason: Dance Competition (held at Joan Kroc Theatre/6611 University Ave). Most of the families will fly into San Diego. Some families are planning on visiting SeaWorld. Most will rent a car. Some have mentioned preferring to stay by water. All want to avoid bad neighborhoods.

Any suggestions or cautions regarding hotels?

Hi Lisa!

I moved your post over here just because it will get more notice :). Mom, Dad, and I went to San Diego last year and we stayed right downtown. The location really couldn't be beat for a beautiful water view and accessibility to the convenient trolley system, but the hotels were a bit expensive. We stayed at the Westgate and it was fab, and popped into the Embassy Suites which looked equally nice. I am sure, though, that there are cheaper alternatives. There are several Epinionators that live near San Diego so hopefully someone will pop by to give you more suggestions!

Thanks!

The team parent is looking at: Red Lion Hanalei Hotel. The one review posted here is not favorable. Does anyone know anything about this location? The group needs to stay in a mid price range... not low end but (unfortunately) not the 200 - 300 range. Most are looking for $149 ish...

Thanks for any suggestions!

:)

Hi Lisa,

I don't know anything about that hotel, but I looked at the location and it would be very nice for your group. It's close to trolley lines, which are excellent for getting between Old Town, Mission Valley, and Downtown. If you wanted to eat out or go shopping, you could probably do it from the trolley without everyone having to get in their cars at night. It's definitely a safe (if not terribly picturesque or interesting) location, mostly upscale condos and my favorite mall.

Thank you for the very helpful reply! One of the other dance moms did some checking at her work and found someone who has stayed there. They spoke favorably about the property. Considering what you mention about the area, and what Heidi heard about it.... At this point, I think the team parent is going to recommend this property.

Can I mention how much it concerns me to make reservations at a site I don't know much about? I think about how certain Seattle establishments make their properties appear internet appealing, but factually the sites are run down and some are in VERY bad areas. I so don't want to end up in a bad neighborhood or at a gross property.

I remember back to one of my trips to Boise. The hotel property was horrific! Thank goodness we were able to book at a much nicer location!

Thanks again epinions friends!

Lisa
