If you were in a band...

Maybe you are already in a band, or you have been in one before. But anyway, if you haven't done any of that and were to be a musical star on stage, what would be your dream instrument/position? Me personally, I'm into drums. I've got fast hands and a pretty good sense of rhythm, I think. One of these days I plan on owning my own drum set just to mess around with it while I'm jamming to my music.

I'm a drummer, but..

To be honest with you, I would go with being the guitar/lead vocal. They get more public responce sometimes then the whole band put together.
I think this is why I like Phil collins. He does both. I am a drummer and I have played in bands before, but people rarely remember me or my abilities, they always remember the singer-guitar player. Although this does sound self-indulged, it's truely my best opinion on that.

RE: I'm a drummer, but..

I'm also into singing too. I used to own an acoustic guitar...until I smashed the thing to pieces. But even when I had it, I couldn't really figure out how to play the thing. Either singing or drumming is what I'd like to do, as they're what I'd most likely be best at.

RE: I'm a drummer, but..

There's a lot to be said for drummers and they can be front-and-center on stage. Don Henley (Eagles) is a drummer and sings great while playing the drums. Most people forget that Karen Carpenter was a drummer... until she starved herself to death. Drummers have a great deal to do with the overall sound of a band.

That said, the guitar is the best "out-front" instrument. You can easily play and sing simultaneously, and even walk around and joke with your bandmates. Try doing that with a piano.

Howard Jones had a keyboard on a strap just like a guitar for that very reason.

I've seen those and that's a pretty cool setup. But it's not the same as playing a real grand piano. Still, it's something that more keyboard players should do. I simply can't stand still while playing guitar and it helps my energy level to move around. The same must be true for other musicians.
