Any suggestions for an all-purpose mountain bike?

I'm considering getting my partner a mountain bike for Christmas and I want something that is fairly basic and relativeley inexpensive - since I'm not sure how much he would use it.

Something that we could use for basic trail riding and also use for riding around the more improved bike paths that are around.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff Abraham would probably know. I love my Specialized Sport - but it is a hybrid. However I know they make mountain bikes and they are affordable. jo

Re: Cost?

How much money do you want to pay?

What are the trails in your area like?

Preferably less than a $1000 and hopefully well below that.

We'd mostly be riding on either improved bike paths or old abandoned roads that are trails now.
