Happened twice this year
Beginning of this year with my Costco Card (HSBC Bank). I often go 3-4 months without using it and pay my balance in full every month. I got switched to paperless billing (I actually *might* have requested it on this card) and soon after my annual membership fee was billed. I never received the emailed statement or notices and since I had paid off the card just before switching to paperless billing and hadn't made another purchase in over 3 months, I didn't know I owed them any money. One day in the mail I received a letter stating my account was 90 days past due and I needed to make a payment to avoid other collection attempts. I checked online and my email address was correct. When I sent them an online message I even got responses and notices regarding the online messaging in my regular email. But yet, I never received any email regarding my monthly statement. As they informed me, they send out an email when the statement is available, a reminder when the due date nears, and another email to let you know you missed your due date and a payment is due immediately. None of those were received. I find that odd. They refused to refund any late fees or finance charges. Only after filing a complaint with the Attorney General's office and the BBB did they agree to refund the charges. I then closed the account.
Just recently I was the victim of "Paperless Slamming" with a Chase credit card where I know I did not request paperless billing (I will never do that again after the Costco/HSBC incident). I pay my bill in full every month and rely on the bill to make my payments. As a professional motorcycle racer, I travel a lot, especially in the middle of the summer which is when this occured. I was away from home for nearly 3 full months, only home a few days here and there. When I was using Quicken and paying other bills I noticed it was near the normal due date for my Chase card but I had not received a statement. I went online and I was actually already a day late. I immediately made an online payment for the full amount but of course Chase didn't care. Charged me a $39 late fee and over $24 in interest. They refuse any refund. I will take them to small claims court if need be. Fortunately, the Truth in Lending Act is on our side. |
