Tainted chicken jerkies - more information!!!

I'm sure most people on this list are aware that Lynn Nieto's Col became ill
after eating the Waggin Train brand of chicken jerkies made in China. You
also probably heard about the recall of chicken jerkies at Wal-Mart. I
decided to test two of my dogs who had been eating the same brand of chicken
jerkies that Col had been eating and was shocked to learn that both of these
dogs had elevated liver values (Alt) and bile acids. I was told by others
that livers can regenerate with proper treatment, so I sought out the help
of the Liver Shunt support list. Although my dogs have not received a
diagnosis, something is up with them. Read below and see what was posted on
the liver shunt list today. This is very scary!!!! If you haven't stopped
feeding pet products from China, I would do so immediately!!!

Part II

HERE IS THE NEWS:

*PLEASE READ AND SHARE THIS WITH ANYONE WHO HAS DOGS, ESPECIALLY SMALL DOGS
*
*Bella, 3 years old, 4 pounds*

*Product - Smoke House Chicken Breast Tenders Treats

Bella became suddenly ill ,and now hospitalized with her life threatened due
to Smoke House Chicken Tenders.I recently purchased at Pet Smart. It
doesn't matter where you purchase them, just don't purchase them.

This was the first time I bought the Smoke House treats. Having read the
label, it was listed as all natural, no additives, dyes etc. The treats
were purchased on or about August 17. She loved them and I was happy
because she typically only likes one treat. By August 23 she vomited bile,
and again on August 24. Her personality began to change becoming lethargic,
wanting to stay in her bed, loss of appetite. excessive drinking, urinating
frequently in excessive amounts. urine became orange like in color. By
August 28 she was severely dehydrated and lost one of her three pounds.
Sugar was found in her urine which would typically indicate diabetes. Bella
was put on IV and given an antibiotic to take while tests were being done
over Labor Day weekend.

Test results showed "irregularity in the lower part of her kidney. Possibly
a hole in the kidney because of the malfunction.

By today Sept 7, she was no better and very low on energy and interest in
being around anyone. I brought the package of Smoke House Chicken Tenders
with me to the vet because it was the only thing that was different in her
diet.

My wonderful vet, a graduate of Cornell University searched the Cornell
Veterinarian site where veterinarians report unusual cases which are
tracked. The search was done by symptoms. A second search by chicken
treats.

**There were numerous cases on the Cornell University Veterinarian web site,
all with the same symptoms, test results and yes, related to chicken tender
treats made in China. Never did it cross my mind that this product was made
in China. When Dr. didn't find complete listing of ingredients on the
package he called the number listed on the back of the package identifying
himself and asked for ingredients to help understand what was happening to
my pet. The only thing the person on the phone with a strong Chinese
accent was "all natural, all natural". Sure enough looking at the small
print on the bottom back of the package is "product of China", the same
source of other products that have been killing our pets. I sat beside my
vet and read along with him. Following are primary repeated findings;

-severe damage to the kidney often resulting in complete renal failure and
death
-numerous reports in the past four to five weeks, a larger number on the
East Coast
- chicken and beef treats promoted as all natural
-it does not matter what the label is, if it is a product of China
-if caught early enough, hospitalized on IV hydrating and flushing the
kidney over days with nutrients may help the kidney heal itself and the pet
could then live with the damaged kidney
-if not caught early complete renal failure is expected
-most cases reported are related to small dogs
-initial symptoms indicate diabetes
-mold is often found when flushing the kidney (found in Bella)

Part III

I have been in touch with Pet Smart requesting them to help get the
ingredients. Time is lost analyzing the food. Today a vet at Cornell
purchased a bag after reading the report my Vet posted on Bella. He then
contacted my vet to say the bag he bought had mold in it despite an
expiration date one year from now. I was asked to look closely at whatever
was left in my bag, but saw none.

After Bella was admitted to the vet I went directly to Pet Smart in Nanuet
NY, told the Manager what happened and asked her to assist getting the
ingredients identified. I was met with a hostile attitude. She was only
interested in getting my name because she felt I was going to file a
complaint. The person at PS headquarters responsible for knowing food
ingredients at Pet Smart headquarters is trying to help.

The information available to vets on the Cornell web site is not public
information. No one seems to be aware of this. Dogs are misdiagnosed

PLEASE SEND THIS ON TO YOUR PET LOVING FRIENDS AND SAVE A PET AND LOTS OF
HEARTACHE.

PLEASE POST THIS INFORMATION ON ANY WEB SITE YOU CAN CONCERNING PETS.

Part I - Part III above

The above was posted to the havanese yahoo group.

Waggin Train Chicken Jerky is not safe. My lab died while we were on vacation at Cornell Emergency Vet Clinic.

I found mold in the bag of chicken jerky . . . God help me but I did not notice it until after I fed her the treats.

I have been in touch with ADI Pet. At first they told me to send them the moldy jerky to test. Then I received a call from another person who told me that they did not want a sample because once a bag was opened and touched by human hands it would be contaminated. They told me that they were testing a sample from the batch that I complained about. There is a post on another site which states that the testing is complete and they found no problems . . . . I'm glad I still have my moldy bag. Somehow this company will have to be taught how to take responsibility for their product.

Waggin Train Chicken Treats

There certainly are a lot of over-reacting souls out there who obviously have no basis to make some of the comments being made.

I am a veterinarian and have a masters in nutrition and so am obviously concerned about my dog's nutrition.

We have been feeding these treats for well over a year and our dogs our healthy, trim and happy.

There is nothing in these treats that would cause a nutritional problem in dogs, quite the contrary.

These treats from a nutritional standpoint are some of the best I have seen. Just because they are made in China does not mean they have "bad" or "dangerous" ingredients in them.
Actually, some of the best products come from China.

As for the claims that these treats have killed their dog, get real! Those making those claims need to get a grip on reality and have a complete post mortem done by a competent veterinarian to determine cause of death.

As for the comments on irradiation - just plain misinformation. Irradiation has been used to sterilize food for many years and it is extremely safe and imparts no danger to the animal or human consuming it. When I was in the US Army Veterinary Corps in the 1970s we tested (and ate) many food samples that had been irradiated. Thirty years later I have had no adverse effects - other than getting old which I don't believe is due to that food sampling.

Bottom line is the treats are safe and nutritious - way better than some of the other junk that is being sold out there. If you are truly concerned about dog health then avoid things like rawhide bones, pig ears and other junk that is sold by the pet industry as "nutritious" and "healthy" for dogs.

Waggin Train

"There is nothing in these treats that would cause a nutritional problem in dogs, quite the contrary."

The trouble is, we have know way to know what's really in the treats, only what's printed on the bag.

Pet food that was involved in the recall debacle of 2007 didn't list melamine and cyanuric acid on the label, either.

IF YOU LOOK AT THE BOTTOM, IN REAL FINE, SMALL PRINT, YOU WILL SEE THAT THE WAGGINTRAIN CHICKEN JERKY TREATS ARE A "PRODUCT OF CHINA". I WON'T BUY ANY MORE!!!!!!!!!! THEY'VE BEEN POISONING OUR PETS, OUR KIDS & WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE. WALMART IS WHERE I BOUGHT MINE, BUT BELIEVE ME I WON'T BUY ANOTHER PRODUCT WITHOUT LOOKING CLOSELY AT WHERE IT COMES FROM.

RE: They are Irradiated, Avoid at all Cost!

I am totally confused now. The irradiation is to rid the product of toxins. If used at safe levels, it is apparently safe. So just because it says that does not mean your dog will get sick; it is to avoid illness. I do not know for sure though so I guess I will stop although my dogs have eaten them for over a year with no problem until last week of one getting severe runs. I do not know if it was because of the jerkey though. I will have to look more closely at the package and will call the company tomorrow.

RE: Waggin Train Brand Jerky Tenders

I have 3 fur babies that have been eating the chicken jerky treats for nearly a year now. I purchased 4 to 5 bags a month. They had been eating grass so much here lately that I teased them about becoming little cows. Last week my babies became sick with loose bowels and vomiting. I noticed that the vomiting only happened after eating the treats. I stopped the treats and both the loose stools as well as the vomiting stopped after stopping the treats for two days. I then decided to google the treats and began reading about the same things happening with others pets that were happening to mine. I took the product back to Sam's Club today. I sent an email to the company but as of this evening, no reply.

RE: waggintrainbrand information needed

Hi There,
this is the first time I get on here and I read all this stuff about, the treats, make dogs sick and so on.......
I was not aware of that problem!
I have 2 Beagles and 1 white Dachshund, the only problem I have is,>>>>>that the product is to dry this time, it used to be real tender and the dogs just go crazy over it, but this time it's like very very dry, just checking on the Product, I got the lot no: 97388, I buy 2 big bags a month, with one bag costing me almost 20$ from wall Mart, I guess it just got almost 5 $ more in Price, in the last 2 week's
Couple weeks ago I paid a little over 15$ ?????
Anyway, this time it was hard for me to even interest the dogs to the treats, just to dry i think!
I'll be happy if you could send me a Coupon for a free Bag so I could try out a new batch or something!

Try to get back with me please
BeagleMa

Waggin' Train Jerky Treats from ADI PET,INC.- Reno, NV, made in China

Have been giving my English Springer Spaniel Waggin’ Train for 3-4 years, one per day until recently, she started getting 2-3 per day due to increased activity. She stopped eating her dog food, urinating every 5 mins, drinking every 2-3 mins, I mean a cup at a time. Vet tested her and she had high liver enzymes and thyroid condition. Did liver biopsy(surgically) and found very fatty liver and discoloration of same. It almost tore apart in his hand. She was radiating heat like crazy through her spine area, yet her temp was normal. Would not lie on her bed anymore, just on the cool tile or out on the breezeway cement. This was a comfort dog who just loved the couch or beds, any bed at all. After being out over $1,500 within the past 5 weeks, I will never again give my animals anything from China. This product used to say ‘Rancho, CA’. I suppose that the taxes were too high so they moved and now the packaging states, ADI-Pet, INC. Reno-NV. I suppose and know that the taxes are cheaper in NV, so…I guess they went one step farther and began to outsource/import and now they have a bunch of ’crap’ for a product, as it now shows it is made in China. When were first began buying these about 5 years ago, there was nothing which showed they were made in China. I urge everyone to never buy this product at any time. Sam’s Club supplied ours, but I’m sure they are sold at a lot of places. I do not care what they say, I know it is the chicken treats that caused her ‘near death’. She is on the road to recovery, thanks in large part to money well spent, a good vet, feeding by hand, force feeding with a syringe, patience, pills by the dozens, sitting up at night with her and cuddling and soothing her fears. China can go to HELL and so can ADI-PET, INC. Nothing they can say will convince me otherwise and I will go into Sam’s Club and write all over their display cases…’THESE ARE FROM CHINA, AND THEY WILL KILL YOUR DOG’!!!!!

waggin train jerky tenders

Ok folks, you may rethink your giving your doggies these treats. I took my dog to the vet the other day, because he was coughing. My dog has no problems with his health and over night just started coughing and vomiting small amts. of white frothy stuff. I took him to the vet to see if he had something stuck in his throat or esophagus. Well come to find out, his esophagus was severely irritated, swollen and scratched. The doc said it was significant and to watch him closely and give him medications that were over $100.00, one an antibotic and the other for the swelling of his esophagus. She said to stop giving him these treats that I have been giving him for over 2 years. I was so sad to think that I caused this trauma to my sweet dog. It cost me money that I can't afford due to unemployment. So, in this case STOP giving your dog these treats, they are too hard for the dogs throats, and they cause harm to their esophagus that you may never know.
