Bestro's Chicken Jerky Strips

My dog died
On Friday July 28, I had to put my dog to rest.

"TOXIC Renal Failure"- straight from the Vet's mouth, this being said to the State Chemist Department, who is now involved with testing.

The only thing new to her diet was these treats..

I have been told that several other dogs have died or had treatment for the same symptoms, but, not treated or tested for confirmation. But... REimburssed for the vet bills.

Hmmmm.. what's that telll you..

Bestro's Roasted Chicken Jerky Strips

My little Shih Tzu had an allergic reaction to Bestro's Roasted Chicken Jerky Strips about the middle of July. Her left ear was red and had fluid in it, the glands in her throat were swollen, (big lump on the left side), her urine smelled rotten, and she had red splotches on her skin around her throat and neck. I thought she was going to die! I stopped giving her the chicken strips and fed her the food I eat. After about two weeks the odor has nearly gone and she is nearly back to normal. I think she will be O.K.

I thought the chicken jerky would be safe because it is dried meat. I read that the meat is soaked in brine which may have caused her to become so ill.

I took my dog to the vet when her symptoms reoccurred. She was tested for organ damage - the vet said she had no damage. Her ears were cleaned and some fur removed from then. She had a prescription for her ears. Since then, she has appeared to be O.K. and then her eyes got red - allergy, I think.

Now,I make her dog food and mix it with a holistic dog food called "Blue." I had been feeding her Nutro Small Bites. Unfortunately, it is too lean nourishment for her and too hard for her to digest. She has gained over a pound by eating homemade dog food (turkey and pork meatloaf laced with oatmeal, eggs, shredded carrots, flax Seed flour and brown rice) with "Blue." I add a little turkey or pork gravy to coat the "Blue." She will pick out the "Blue" if it doesn't have gravy on it.

Please let me know if you have had a similar experience with this product. I'm wondering if a chemical was used on the chicken during processing.

NEW OLD INFORMATION: THE JERKY SAYS IT IS IRRADIATED DURING PROCESS AND ADDS IT IS NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION!!!!
I JUST READ AN ARTICLE FROM THE FOOD MARKETING INSTITUTE ON FOOD IRRADIATION (ONLINE) AND IT SAYS:
"...IRRADIATION PRODUCES BENZENE, FORMALDEHYDE, CYCLOBUTANONES AND POSSIBLE OTHER COMPOUNDS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED."
THIS MUST BE THE PROBLEM! I CAN IMAGINE INSECTS, FUNGUS, LARVAE AND BATERIA SUPPOSEDLY BEING IRRADIATED ON MEAT DURING PROCESSING. IT IS LIKELY THAT ALL THE MEAT IS NOT IRRADIATED PROPERLY WHICH COULD CAUSE A DOG TO GET SALMONELLA, OR ECOLI POISONING. AND ON MEAT THAT IS FAIRLY CLEAN AND THEN IRRADIATED, YOU CAN GET THE DEADLY CHEMICALS. I SUSPECT THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED TO MY DOG. SHE WILL EVENTUALLY GET THIS OUT OF HER SYSTEM. SHE HAD A BAD TIME. NO MORE FOOD PRODUCTS FROM CHINA!

Please help us !

Our little frenchie has been strangely ill the past few days. Started with vomiting then moved to soft bloody BM's and tremendous thirst. We have given him these chicken treats in the past and are terrified he is stricken with the same toxicity your little one had. Can you explain the details of his symptoms and what the Vet said?

Very VERY scared!

RE: Please help us !

Listen, do not waste any time. Get this dog to the emergency now, take with you the topic.

Your answer will come immediatly with a simple blood draw. If the blood draw is ok then that is good news. Kidney issues hit hard and fast there is no time to waste on this. If your dog ate these treats as my neigbors dog did please run to emergency and demand the blood work up. Well worth the $100 or so dollars. if you wait any longer your dog may become seriously ill. I dont know of any other way to urge you to immediatly get a blood count on your dog if they have eaten these treats. Dont let them send you home with antibotics or anything else without a blood work up.

for some reason your post did not post with the rest of this topic, i suspect that is why you did not get an answer. you can email me at kcorso@asilink.com with any questions.

dont wait

My dog ate these yesterday..

I gave my dog these treats yesterday morning then read an article on yahoo that these treats had been recalled. I came home from work today and my dog was dead and bleeding from the mouth. He was otherwise healthy...do you think this could be related? Would it cause death that quickly?

RE: My 2 year old yorkie is in renal failure

Your dog needs to be on constant fluid therepy. the FDA is involved in bestro treats. there is another thead with a lot more information than this one. Have your vet contact the FDA they have more information. My friends two dogs thankfully survived. Fluids for two weeks!

best of luck

RE: Bestro's Chicken Jerky Strips

I am the one who had a chihuahua mix who was diagnosed with chronic renal failure, she is being managed but it is a day to day thing.
I sent you the "chicken jerky treats" if you got them please let me know

Also do you know where the treats were sold at or if they were only sold in one place??
Any information you can help me with would be appreciated

Is this happening again?

My dog ate some of these chicken jerky strips. Gradually, she became more and more ill. After many trips and stays at the vet, she was diagnosed with renal failure. After reading about past problems with chicken jerky strips on snopes.com, I looked into it further. Many of the dogs had similar symptoms to mine. Anyone else experiencing this with jerky strips again? Mine were purchased at Trader Joe's in Oregon.

Dog Getting Sick from Chicken Jerky

We have heard so much about dogs getting sick from various brands of chicken jerky strips made in China. Our dog got quite sick too but luckily recovered with treatment. Our vet told us about Kona's Chips--you can find them online--they are all chicken jerky strips made in America and Pooky loves them! There's a lot of interesting info on their website too... you can check it out at konaschips.com
