Help! ICH in an aquraium

I have been a fish owner for over 5 years now. Started out with a small 10G tank with goldfish, to a 10G with iradescent shark, rainbow shark and a sucker. Then we got a 16G because the fish got way to big, to now having a 48G (estimated) due to the sharks growing more. The new tank was used about three years ago and has sat empty since then. We set up the tank and moved our fish. They seemed okay but were not as active as before. We purchased 2 more ir sharks and also 2 tetras from walmart. All seemed to be fine until about 1 week after adding the new fish the 2 new ir sharks died soon after all the fish except the 2 tetras had ich. We tried the salt treatment and raising the water temp but with no help. We have lost all of our fish one by one except the tetras which still seem to be doing fine. So I guess my ?'s are: How long should I wait before adding new fish? Should I drain the tank and leave it alone for awhile? if so how long? or leave set up with filters running ? for how long? I'm sorry for all the ?'s but in all my time with an aquarium I have never had any issues with anything my tanks have always looked good and my fish healthy. I even have an outside pond with goldfish and have never had problems (except the occasional stray cat or racoon eating them). Any help is greatly appreciated!! thanks missy

RE: Help! ICH in an aquraium

Dump the water and disinfect the tank thoroughly!

There are several medications that can be added whenever ich is suspected.

If your original fish did not have ich and you introduced the new ones without a proper quarantine period... your tank was infected by the new additions. Buying fish from walmart is a bad idea. They know absolutely zilch about pets!

If you decide to start again, buy from a reputable dealer. That dealer will be the best person to help you establish a healthy and compatible community. Filling a tank full of fish is not the best thing you can do. Get the help of a professional. You'll enjoy your aquarium without too much worry.

Best of luck!
