Looking for a Title/Author - Books Experts?

A thread on the General Board triggered a memory of a novel. I don't remember the title or author but the premise is still crystal clear.

It was a murder mystery. The victim was a very well-connected DC person who died at his home. The story never disclosed who killed him, but why he was murdered is what I remember.

The man was a big supporter of elective candidates in state and national politics with seemingly unlimited funds to help elect those he supported. He sponsored people from both major parties and many of them became elected officials, including one president.

He died because he was a mole from an unfriendly nation and was totally dedicated to the overthrow of the United States. His method of destruction, which was so successful he had to be stopped, was to support any candidate for office as long as they were a practicing attorney.

It has to be the longest lawyer joke in history. If anyone happens to know the title or author I would like to read it again.

Larry - thanking Redlass for the suggestion to bring the question to Books

Richard North Patterson?

Does that ring a bell? He writes a lot of legal murder mysteries.

Probably not, since Patterson - along with Grisham, Scottoline, Taylor-Rosenberg, Tanenbaum, Margolin, and almost every other practicing or retired attorney turned writer - reveres attorneys as God's gift to mankind, and would never sully the profession with such a jab.

Maybe Tim Green. Was it lousy?

I don't remember it as one that was outstanding, except for the premise of the lawyer joke. I don't think it was any of the mainstream mystery, action/adventure, legal thriller writers. I remember a sense that it was a poor attempt to emulate the writing style of Robert Ludlum who was still actively writing then.
