How long...

...until a book can be called a classic?

There are certainly post-WWII books that now classify as classics, but what about books in the 90s? How old does something have to be before it gets status as a classic?

I think we can only know retroactively. We just don't know which books from the 90s are going to "make it," canon-wise.

I'm fairly well-read, up to a point. But I bet I haven't read any of the books anyone would consider a candidate for "classic" status written later than 1980. I might be forgetting something, but it's like my personal canon just ends there. It's not deliberate, just laziness.

Anyone have any nominations for books from the 90s that will be (or are) canon by now?

I'll be bold and throw something out there:

The Giver by Lois Lowry.

And one from the 2000s:

The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
