Sequels...

... why is it that nowadays you never see sequels with numbers in the titles? Nowadays it's all "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs", "Terminator: Salvation" - not Transformers 2, Ice Age 3 and Terminator 4. When did this start to happen? Do the filmmakers believe that people won't realise (or stygmatise?) that these films are sequels, or is it just not cool to have a number at the end of your film title these days?

I have to admit though... Star Trek 11 or Star Trek XI wouldn't looked a bit dumb... :-D

RE: Sequels...

I think those names sort of make the sequels look like direct to video dreck. You know, like the fifty-seventh installment of "The Land Before Time" or something, where they're just embarrassed to put a number on it.

I'd sort of like it if they'd include the number (like "Ice Age 4: The Big Chill" - yes, I made that up) so the Eps search engine could find it!

RE: Sequels...

I read somewhere - in the last few years, but I can't remember when - that the studios were trying to avoid using the numbers so the movies would seem fresher or something like that. Whatever story I was reading mentioned some aging series that studios were doing that with - one series that was mentioned just had the second movie coming out around that time. Someone decided that leaving the numbers out of the sequels made the titles sound more trendy or something.

Whatever article I read might have been in an issue of Entertainment Weekly or it might have been online somewhere. I just can't remember where it came from now.

RE: Sequels...

I understand that. At least they're coming up with a more imaginitive title.

Meanwhile, automakers go in the other direction:

Cadillac Deville becomes DTS
Lincoln makes an MKS, MKX, and MKT instead of Marks
BMWs and Mercedes are just numbers.
