Webcam for Mac

I'm looking for a webcam that can be used with a Macintosh, but they all seem to be quite expensive.

Any suggestions for something that doesn't cost too much? I'm looking in the $ 50 range (or less... I wish).

Thanks!

Sheila

RE: Webcam for Mac

I don't have any experience using a webcam with a Mac.

If you paste this link into your browser, it will give you a list of Webcams listed on epinions that claim to be Mac compatible:

http://www.epinions.com/Web_Cameras--reviews--type__list__web_camera/keyword_search_~1?submitted_form=ultrafinder&search_string=MAC&ultrafinder_submitted=+Search+&previous_search_string=&previous_min_price=&previous_max_price=

If this link is too long, go to this page, type MAC into the "BY KEYWORD" box, and then click on the search button.

http://www.epinions.com/Web_Cameras--reviews--type__list__web_camera/search_string_~/keyword_search_~1

Sorry I couldn't help more.

Shiela,

I sit in the same boat as NC10 in that I have no personal experience with webcams for macs, but I did find this thread in a mac forum that seems to indicate that it is a pretty simple process to get any logitech webcam to work with a Mac (download a driver called maccam).

http://www.ehmac.ca/showthread.php?t=26762&goto=nextoldest

I have used the Logitech Quickcam Messenger on a PC for quite some time and it works great for our needs. Has a microphone built in, and it isn't that expensive. I can't guarantee that it will work with just this driver added, although from the posts in the forum it seems that it should. If so this would be a good cam to use.

Thank-you

Thank-you for both of your replies.

Since this is going to be a gift, I'll first do some experimenting on a friend's mac with my Logitech QuickCam Express. It is listed as one of the compatible webcams on epinions, even though it doesn't say so on the box. If not I'll try with the Macam driver...

While we're at it, do you know of any program for both PC and Mac to communicate via webcam? cause MSN Messenger doesn't seem to allow Macs, and AIM doesn't allow PCs...

Thanks again,

Sheila

mac/pc compatible webconference

Hi, in answer to your question, and after many hours of trying to figure out which program supports both mac & pc, I am happy to tell you that www.ivisit.com does support both. The support people are wicked and the program is quite good. I've been conferencing with pc people and it works no problem (well, a bit of a lag here and there, but nothing to get too frustrated with).

SKYPE!!!!

Hi, I guess a lot of people haven't heard of skype. I used iVisit all the time before they started to charge for their service. Skype is totally free, you can do video chat, plus you can call any local telephone for FREE right from your computer....

OR...

If your mac has Bluetooth built in or if you want to buy a Bluetooth adapter, you can also get a Bluetooth headset and use that with Skype so you dont have to sit right in front of your computer when you chat.

I live in California, and i've done video chat from here with my mac, with a friend in JAPAN on a PC!! It really works! I've heard the "Gold" version of Skype for mac is not as good as the beta version though. I hope they'll be fixing that soon.

I just hope they dont start charging like iVisit did.

Macs, webcams and Skype

Hi there. I'm working with a iMac G5 running OS10.3.9 and have all the technical know-how of a tin of baked beans. That having been admitted, I'm trying to set this baby up with Skype and a webcam so that my wife can see friends who are back home in China (and happily using Skype).

I've read lots of forums on what can and cannot be used but don't feel I have come to a definitive conclusion about what type of webcam will work with the system I have. Any help would be much appreciated and apologies for coming back to what is probably a very old topic.

Given my technical abilities, I'm going for as trouble-free a solution as I can find and looking for something I can buy in the UK. Thanks for any help:-)

RE: Webcam for Mac

Out of curiosity (and self interest!) Sheila, did you ever find one?

Webcam, Macs and Skype

Thanks for getting back to me via email Sheila. Appreciated:)

A further question for anyone: I've purchased a Genius branded Look 1320 webcam (which claims compatibility with Macs and has a Mac driver in the installation CD). Skype has downloaded OK but the webcam doesn't appear to be recognised despite an apparently successful software installation.
Any help appreciated.

RE: SKYPE!!!!

I'm looking for a webcam to use on my Mac from california to talk to someone on skype in the UK (who uses a PC)...and i was wondering which web cam you use? since i know there's issues with webcams working on Macs, and when talking to people on PC's, I was hoping there was a solid choice that works on Macs to talk to PC users. I really appreciate the advice! thanks!

webcam for mac

Macs prefer firewire webcams. This is your best bet. Otherwise, download maccam for your USB cam.
