Do power cords go bad?

I've been having problems with the cord for my laptop's power adapter for some months now. The problem is the wire itself has trouble fitting into the laptop's power port where it plugs in. I've had the laptop for about a year and a half now, so I'm wondering if this is a normal occurrence?

The problem wasn't so bad at first, as I just needed to push the laptop around a bit to keep the screen from dimming. What happens is the wire slides out, the screen dims, and the battery logo appears onscreen as the laptop then is running on its own power. But now it's at a point where I've got to squeeze onto the cord to even use the laptop, since the cord will no longer stay inserted on its own any longer (or very rarely). Do I need to buy a new adapter?

RE: Do power cords go bad?

CK,

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I would guess that the problem is not with the power cord, but the connection in the laptop. Don't know if yours is a Toshiba, but Toshiba laptops have had a lot of problems with the power connection breaking off of the motherboard, making it impossible for the computer to charge without soldering the connection back on. Another possibility is that the motherboard may have shifted in the case so that the connection isn't aligned anymore. Honestly, I haven't heard of your problem happening before, but it may be worth opening the case and looking around if you are comfortable... Hope this helps!

It's actually an Averatec laptop. I sent the laptop in for repairs already for what I think the guy on the phone said is that the motherboard connection is loose. Unfortunately, this only happened after I had already ordered a replacement power adapter when getting no feedback here.
