Finding another way to get to your music

Oct 03 '00

every day Im forced to face the cruel reality: marketing and profits are more important to the music industry than the music itself. In my opinion, Napster is the ultimate effort to put people in touch with the music we love, without having to pay a lot of money for music we dont really want.

Back in the old times, music was considered a pure expression of creativity from prodigious minds, no matter what kind of music. Now we have to deal with over-exploited, unmercifully attacks from record companies pushing their "not so brilliant" artist who, in most cases, offer just mediocre and forgettable music. I miss the good ol´70´s, when the best music was created in my opinion. No BSB, no Brittney, no Christina Aguuilera´s, no "A" teens...

What does this has to do with Napster, you may ask? well, deep down the issue its all about having CHOICES. Where else can you get that great song no longer being released on CD´s, because its not profitable for the record companies?? People who love music, like me, have found in Napster a way to find those old songs we used to love, which are no longer available in the market. I think its unfair that record companies pretend to steal those memories from us, end even worse: steal our right to CHOOSE the music we really want to hear and keep.

Real musicians want their work to be remembered, to trascend the barrier of time and generations. Why do we have to wait until a certain record company releases a "compilation" (if you are lucky...), based on THEIR choices???.

Perhaps an agreement can be reached, if companies were not so greedy. I made some calculations, just to give you an idea: I picked up my 10 best favorite tunes from the 75 to 80 period (mostly new wave and rock songs from artist or groups who dont even exist enymore)...went to a HUGE music store, and I could only find 2 CD´s...and then to another store... reaching my goal implied that I had to buy 10 CD´s, over $170USD, plus 100 other songs I really didnt care about...bottom line: Almost $200 bicks for just 10 songs I really wanted?? this is ridiculous...ant to top it all off, I couldnt even find 5 of those songs, because they are so rare nobody knows about them, specially the salespersons on those record stores.

On Napster, It took me less than 4 hours to find, download and enjoy those same songs...virtually free. If Napster goes down, RIAA will be taking away your right to choose the music you want to hear but its no longer available. I dont feel im stealing at all by using Napster for this purpose! Im shure most of the artist who wrote those songs wanted, above all, to make their work a treasure for future generations.

Im 100% behing Napster and its will to survive. If we payed more attention to the essence of music and not just the profitable side of it, we wold have much better "new" artists than the ones clogging the airwaves with their mushy songs, ones that will be forgotten as soon as the new teen idol arise next year. Dont let RIAA take away the good music from you.
