I got to see Greg Brown at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS in November of 2000. He is planning on taking off most of next year so if you get a chance see him this tour.
The first time I saw him was 1992 in Chicago at the Old Town School of Folk Music where he was playing with Bill Morrissey. I had been listening to his CD's for a while but a friend says "See him live and you will enjoy the CD's all the more". I'm not a big fan of concerts - they are usually to crowded and to loud for me but this was different. A small crowd and relaxed show, and indeed I went home and enjoyed the CD's all the more.
I also saw him in 1999 in Bloomington Illinois playing with Bo Ramsey and he spent time chatting with the audience members during the break. I leave Greg's concerts feeling like I have spent time talking to an old friend.
This time it was just Greg and I was more impressed then ever! He played a lot off of his newest album Covenant mixed in with some old favorites (though I have yet to hear '20 or so' live). When I saw the stage setup of a guitar stand, a table with water, a mike and guitar I was afraid he would be dwarfed by the huge stage but he filled it up with his amazing voice and I felt like we were in someone's living room with only a few people. I took two friends that had never seen him before and they were at first concerned by this hobo looking guy walking out on stage, but by the end they were buying all the CD's they could get.
He's shows tend to be in small venues and you really get a "feel" of Greg and his music. All the shows I have been to have sold out so get your tickets early.
