You are giving away your age (Reply to this comment)

These are all favorites of mine too, the list could go on and on. I also love the big band era, as those are alot of the records my parents had, along with Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and so many more. the late 40's, 50's,60's,70,s, those oldies but goodies.
Thanks for the memories

I enjoyed this "old" opinion of yours, Howard. (Reply to this comment)
by henry_thoreau, in Music
You not only mentioned two or three artists I really should get around to adding to my "jukebox," but also you reminded me to get Dolly Parton's version of "I Will Always Love You," which (as you mentioned) Whitney Houston subsequently covered. I'd been meaning to do that for a long time but (being hopelessly absent-minded) had kept forgetting.
BTW, maybe I'll go ahead and start clicking on your (more numerous) "photography" reviews, albeit I honestly don't know the first thing about photography or cameras, and I already can't do justice to my established pastimes. ;-)
As always, best regards!

Hi Mary,
Yeah, my musical tastes haven't changed a whole lot - I just keep adding new performers/groups to the list.
You should try my e-mail address again, I have no idea why it would get kicked back. Gina sends her greetings. Louisville is an acquired taste, but it does possess a sort of weird provincial charm.
Please pass my congratulations along to the "kid" on his impending nuptials.

Why, indeed.
Happy Holidays and best wishes for a great new year.

Say Hi to Gina for me. I love Louisville and have been there many times. Didn't know you were back. Happy Holidays to all. Miss the attitude, lol.
Love to all, Mary ( AKA Crawford )
P.S. The Kid as JC calls him is getting married in August and will be 27. How time flys.

...You don't have "Bring your daughter to the slaughter" by Iron Maiden. Great review Howard. Reminds me of when a friend broke up with his girlfriend at University. Loaded the College Pub Dukebox with great songs like "Can't Live (if living is without you)" and "I'll be there" just to cheer him up. I'm going straight to hell aren't I?

Howard,
Is there anything you can't write about? This is a fine music review --- I also like the fact you've included a couple of my favorite singers, Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline, in your list. Very well-done, amigo!

one they think should be on the list. My addition would be "The Sky Is Crying" by Stevie Ray Vaughn.
I am totally with you on your choices, especially Patsy's "I Fall to Pieces"
Good job!

Great list! (Reply to this comment)

A few years ago, I had a roommate who was grieving over an ended relationship. She made a tape called "Songs to Cry By." Most of your list was on her tape. The rest of your list should have been. Great list!

...this would be an excellent way to start. Easily one of the finest list of pure angst I have ever read, and thanks for included Stagg High School Alumnae Isaac among your fine list of choices.
I like it when hometown boys do good, and Chris has been studying his idols, Lefty and Roy very well. Keep 'em coming Howard, and I do believe the previous analogy of capturing pictures and painting word pictures is very apt.
Another who was there,

Heartbreak Songs (Reply to this comment)
by flamepillar
Great picks!! I haven't heard some of those in ages. I remember "Somebody's Cryin'", always liked that song too. Brought back a lot of memories as I read over the lyrics and started to hum it to myself. One other song that comes to mind that blew me away with the melody alone was "Heartbreaker" by Dionne Warwick. I think that'll always be a favorite of mine.

Barbara, I knew that somebody would notice the fact that my top ten was actually eleven.
I lived in Germany for more than ten years, mostly in Bavaria (so I was close to Wurzburg) I also lived in Frankfort, Kassel, and Bremerhaven. Loved every minute of it.

A fine list of heartbreak! (Reply to this comment)
by mptang
Know most of 'em but a few slipped by me. Totally agree on W. Houston's rendition; Dolly can do her own songs justice without any help, thank you very much!
I was exposed to Chris Isaak from the "Wild at Heart" soundtrack. He's extremely hot and who can forget "We Did a Bad Bad Thing" from "Eyes Wide Shut."
You did a good, good thing, mentor o'mine. Very nice review. Sometimes you don't have to experience heartbreak to know what it sounds like.

Nathaniel73, thanks for your kind words. I first got into Texas in 1989 while we were living in Germany. I first heard Womack & Womack during this same period (I can't understand how a group this good...including the daughter of one of America's soul icons...is almost unknown in this country) As for Chris Isaak, he is one of the best ever...be sure to check out Gram Parsons and Solomon Burke (I promise you won't regret it)
Thanks again. Howard

Howard, you've done it again. While some of the songs are a bit before my time, I was very glad to see your inclusion of Texas, Chris Isaak, and Womack & Womack. Both "Teardrops" and "You Can Say What You Want" were big, big hits down under. Sharleen Spiteri is a wonderful singer, as you point out. And I have never been able to figure out why Chris Isaak is not a megastar - he has the voice, the talent, and the looks!
