When your heart is broken you experience many emotions. Anger, sadness, and resilience can be found after any breakup and my mix incorporates songs that represent all of these. By taking you through each step, the idea is to feel better by the end of the mix. Now this mix tape is truly an assortment but you’ll notice an abundance of Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, and Depeche Mode. What can I say, those folks that always wear black express anger and misery better than most! So, without further ado, my Heartbreak Therapy Mix:
The Beginning: Anger and Cynicism
Thieves (Ministry) - Ahhh, nothing like anger to get this mix started. Thieves is a hard-core industrial song with guitars that sound like they’re firing machine guns, a crunching drum beat, and shouting lyrics. And with lyrics like “Thanks for nothing!” you can imagine a big F. U. to the jerk that hurt you. Crank it up and shout at the top of your lungs. You neighbors will hate you but you’ll feel a whole lot better.
Mr. Self Destruct (Nine Inch Nails) - More angry music from the angriest man of the ‘90s, Trent Reznor. Like Thieves, this is hard and heavy and suitable for screaming with. It’s fast, driving, full of distortion, and great for feeling angry. Plus, with a title like Mr. Self Destruct, it might just describe how you’re feeling.
You Oughta Know (Alanis Morissette) – Perhaps the most well known shunned-woman song. Well, it’s a good one so listen to it. It’s really about a guy who’s with another woman, but even if that’s not your situation you can still enjoy Alanis Morissette’s anger. A moderate-tempo rock song with a hard chorus, it’s a catchy tune made all the better by the spitting out lyrics. “Does she know how you told me you’d hold me until you died?” Yeah, what a bast**d.
Blasphemous Rumors (Depeche Mode) – I’m going to slow this down for a minute but keep the attitude the same. This song by Depeche Mode didn’t get played as much on the radio as many of their other tunes, but I love it. It talks about how awful things are constantly happening to good people. It’s a nice mellow pace, a slight industrial atmosphere, and great lyrics. “I don’t want to start any blasphemos Rumors, but I think that God’s got a sick sense of humor. And when I die I expect to find him laughing.” Ain’t it the truth.
I Do Not Want This (Nine Inch Nails) – One last song for the angry section. Trent was obviously hurting when he did Downward Spiral and if you read the lyrics, you’ll see how appropriate this song is for a heartbreak mix. With a moderate beat, light sounds in the verse and heavy sounds in the chorus, I Do Not Want This is a great song to work through your feelings with. “Don’t you tell me how I feel!”
Time to get out the tissues: Sadness
Pictures of You (The Cure) – Moving into the depression part of heartbreak, what band is better to suffer with than The Cure. This one can really make you cry if you’ve just had your heart broken, but sometimes it feels better to just let it out. A very ethereal sound with a moderate tempo, this song talks about being forlorn when looking at the “pictures of you”. “If only I’d thought of the right words, I wouldn’t be breaking apart.” *sniff* Oh, and by the way, if you really want to be depressed, pick up a copy of Disintegration. It’s a fantastic album for sitting around miserable.
On My Own (sung by Eponine, Les Miserables) – Bet you wouldn’t think showtunes could fit in here. But On My Own from Les Miserables is the perfect song for when you’re longing for that one person but are destined to be on your own. A sad ballad sung by a woman who is watching the love of her life fall in love with another, it’s a fantastic sad song and great to sing when you feel like you’re alone. “All my life I’ve only been pretending. Without me his world will go on turning. The world is full of happiness that I have never known…” A fantastic song (and show if you get a chance to see it).
Hurt (Nine Inch Nails) – Trent’s not just good at being angry, he’s good at being sad too. With the sounds of wind and a slowly picked guitar, the lyrics fit for being really depressed. Yes, sometimes the pain is “the only thing that’s real”. I can’t even explain this song. I can just say it’s great and good to wallow in self-pity with. “Everyone I know goes away in the end”
A Letter to Elise (The Cure) – One more from the Cure. This has a tune that is slightly upbeat but it’s still melancholy. When you’ve had a relationship that just isn’t quite working, you’ll really appreciate this song. It’s not that you don’t care about the person, but it’s just not going to work. “I thought you were the girl I always dreamed about, but I let the dream go.”
But Not For Me (Harry Connick Jr., from the When Harry Met Sally soundtrack) - When you want to have an entire orchestra backing you up in your depressed feelings, this song is perfect. Man, those old-fashioned song writers really knew what they were talking about. With Harry Connick’s fantastic swoony voice and a very slow piano-picked tune, this tune is romantic and sad. “They’re writing songs of love, but not for me.” It certainly seems like that when you’re heart is aching. “Although I can’t dismiss the memory of her kiss… I guess she’s not for me.”
Life will get better: Resilience
Somebody (Depeche Mode) – Now it’s time to start thinking of how great you are and how things will get better. This song is slightly sad and might even make you cry, but then you’ll realize that the perfect person described in this slow ballad is NOT the person you were just dating. “I want somebody to share the rest of my life, share my innermost thoughts, know my intimate details.” Yeah, we all want that and even when heartbroken, you have to realize you still have a chance to find that somebody.
How Soon is Now? (The Smiths) – Nothing like a quick, new wave tune to cheer you up. With the Smiths well-known song on your speakers you can dance around and enjoy the boppy tune. But you can also sing at the top of your lungs: “I am human and I need to be loved! Just like everybody else does.” I just wanna be loved, is that so wrong? No, it isn’t wrong.
Don’t Give Up (Peter Gabriel) – This is another song that might make you a little sad at first, but it’s really great for realizing that the world does not end when you break up with somebody. It’s a mellow tune with nice mellow vocals and it’s point is: You are not alone. “Don’t give up, ‘cause you have friends. Don’t give up, you’re not beaten yet.” Yeah.
They can’t take that away from me (Fred Astaire) – Astaire may be a dancer but you haven’t lived until you’ve heard him sing. This song is one of the few that’s not about being in love and enjoying it. I really like this song because it’s upbeat and it talks about remembering the good times with somebody. You may not end up with them, but they’ve given you memories that you’ll always have (and surely some of them are good ones). “We may never, never meet again on the bumpy road to love, but I’ll always, always keep the memory of…” And they can’t take that away from me.
The magic of music
Yeah, heartbreak sucks, but music can always make you feel better. Whether it’s shouting in anger, crying your eyes out, or just realizing that life goes on, music is there to help you through it. Good luck Kristina! We’re all here for you!
